Snippet #2:
Padron made his way to the mines in Chatwick. He was determined to figure out what on Irth could have been so important down there it would have caused all this turmoil. His friend Sariah’s life was in chaos, and fer what? A worthless medallion at the bottom of some mineshaft in a hopeless town in the middle of the Alpenwood.
He shook his head. No, that didn’t make no sense. People don’t kill and destroy fer nothing. There had ta be a reason. Something else was going on in this town, and he had every intention of getting to the bottom of it, and that meant going back into the mines.
The rearick pushed on his mine cart and headed for the entrance to the shaft. The cart held his battle-ax and a handful of low-grade explosives, covered by a couple of blankets and some pickaxes. The hefty weapon would help him get past any human guards who might block his path, and the explosives should take care of anything more stationary.
On his left, the mine foreman sat in a watchtower, inspecting all of the miners as they came into work. Most were waved through without incident, though the occasional man would be stopped and frisked by a nearby guard.
“Bah,” Padron grumbled. “Some lousy policy this is,” he added under his breath. read more…

After landing in the courtyard, Akio led Kenjii into the office building. They approached an elevator that had opened on its own and entered. Kenjii felt the lift descend a short distance, then the doors opened into a well-lit hallway with no visible openings.
Akio led him to a wall at the end of the hall and placed his hand on a blank spot at chest height. The area underneath lit up briefly and a section of the wall slid open, revealing another elevator. Kenjii looked askance but remained silent as the older vampire motioned for him to enter.
The door slid closed once they were inside, and Kenjii started as a voice filled the space. “Welcome, Akio, and congratulations on a successful mission.”
“Thank you, Abel. This is Kenjii. Please grant him level one access.”
“Level one access confirmed. Welcome to our home, Kenjii. It is good to meet you finally.”
The new arrival’s eyes widened as he looked at Akio.
“This is Abel, the entity intelligence who runs our base. He has been helping me search for you since you came out of the rubble at Acheng,” Akio explained. read more…

1 – “So Gabe, I was thinking,” Sariah started. She took a step toward him and beamed at him with eyes that were glowing like diamonds.
Gabriel let out a massive sigh. “I know what you’re going to ask, Sariah. The answer is no.”
“Aw, come on,” she whined. “You know you want to.”
Gabe gave her a sideways glance and shrugged. “You’re right, I do. Or at least I did once. But it’s still a no.”
“Humph!” She turned her back to him. She thought about walking out of their little shared room in The Dragonfly for good measure, but where would she go?
Despite the fact she’d spent the better part of the last month in and near the city of Stratton, she didn’t know the area very well. Apart from her occasional trips to Market Square and her bout with Lucien, she’d stuck to the little inn.
It wasn’t that she didn’t like an adventure. She just felt lost in the vastness of open spaces. She’d grown up in a small mining town. Big open areas weren’t really her thing. She was much more comfortable in close quarters.
She bit her lip. Trying to get Gabriel to do anything was like pulling teeth. He was completely impossible, especially lately.

Sariah woke with a start sometime after midnight. The air was cool and there was a breeze above her, which was odd because she usually kept her window closed. In the distance, she heard the howl of a lycanthrope on the prowl outside town.
At first, she thought maybe her growling tummy had woken her. One apple was hardly a sufficient meal.
Something about her room seemed…not quite right. She had the impression someone was in her room with her.
She cracked open her eyes and caught the pale glint of a knife hovering above her, poised to strike. With a yelp, she rolled out of the way as the knife descended, missing her head.
She quickly got to her feet and turned to face the threat. Her eyes widened in disbelief. The dagger appeared to hang in the air, moving as if on its own.
The knife came at her again. She lifted her blanket to use as a shield to block and slow its descent. read more…

Snippet #1:
Sariah inched her way through the chasm, sliding her body toward her goal. She screamed as a sharp piece of rock bit into her chest.
“Damn that hurts!”
She looked down. There was no blood and her shirt was intact, a good sign. She tried to angle her body to keep from impacting the rock further, but she was stuck. She’d either have to keep going and deal with the pain or make her way back.
Sariah sighed. She could call to the boys in the cavern behind her for help, but then she’d have to share whatever prize awaited her up ahead.
Her belly growled, reminding her she hadn’t had a good meal in at least a day. Life was hard down in the mines, but it was better than dying in the streets or selling yourself in the sheets, so she made do.
Most of the kids in the town of Chatwick were miners, the only source of money in this godforsaken place. Some kids started as young as ten, going into the mine each day and foraging for their living.
Sariah had been lucky. Growing up with two living, working parents, she had been spared the grueling conditions of mine work.
As she neared adulthood and after her dad got injured, money grew scarce. So, here she was at sixteen, grinding out her days looking for veins of precious metals.
It wasn’t all bad. When she found a good source, she was richly rewarded, and her tiny frame allowed her to reach spots others couldn’t. She was quite good at it, too. Not that any of it would matter if she died stuck in this small crevasse.
Sariah laughed at herself, then stopped as the motion made the sharp piece of rock against her chest dig itself in further. She shook her head.
“Well, let’s at least see if all this is gonna be worth it.” read more…
