A Dark History Revealed in This Snippet of The Hedge Witch Diaries Book 1
The Hedge Witch Diaries Book 1: Witch of The Woods
Is there such a thing as a necessary evil? Is killing a few to save many a justified action?
Witch of the Woods –
August, 1743
The bloody sigil carved in the warlock’s skin throbbed, not only from the wound but from the dark magic that coursed within it. A magic he’d sworn he would never use.
The scent of burning wood and charred flesh lingered in the air. Dozens were already dead. Burned at the stake. Hundreds more awaited an identical fate.
The warlock held his breath as he passed the grim scene. He didn’t know those witches. He hardly knew anyone at all. But they didn’t deserve to die.
More were soon to be judged and condemned to the same.
With a deep breath, the warlock stepped through the doors of Notre Dame de Paris, his body covered in a dark cloak that hid the magic coursing through the dark sigil on his arm.
More than a thousand men and women whipped into a fear-fueled frenzy gathered to witness the so-called trials, which weren’t trials at all. The witnesses were stacked. False promises of salvation, in exchange for public repentance, wouldn’t earn their freedom. It was all a part of the charade. Murder disguised as mercy. Those who repented might be spared the wrath of God in the life thereafter, but they’d burn all the same.
Nicholas Rémy had already claimed hundreds of lives in his relentless pursuit of purging the “ungodly devils” from the face of the Earth. A tall man with a crooked nose and sunken eyes, Rémy glared at the accused with a mixture of disgust and twisted satisfaction.
“Se repentir!” Rémy demanded from behind the towering pulpit. Repent and be “saved.” A hollow promise. Few witches ever took Rémy up on it. Why would anyone want to be saved by a god who supposedly thought they were born abominations?
The warlock leaned against a mosaic on the back of the cathedral’s narthex, his heart heavy with grief and anger. He knew he was the only one who could save the witches and end this nightmare once and for all.
His curse had made him an outcast, a hedge, a pariah among witches and men.
It also granted him immunity to Rémy’s wards. Those potent defenses had thwarted countless attempts to hinder his murderous crusade.
The warlock pulled up his sleeve, and his gaze fell upon the strange geometric sigil carved into his skin. The ancient magic, first devised by the ancient netters in Egypt, contained a power so malevolent that it could consume the user in darkness for centuries. For an immortal like him, the effects could last even longer.
Gathering his strength, the warlock charged into the sanctuary, his entrance silencing the murmurs of the crowd gathered within. His eyes blazed with determination, and the air thrummed with the force of his dark magic.
“Enough!” he roared, his voice echoing through the hallowed halls. “This farce ends now!”
The congregation gasped collectively, their eyes wide with shock and fear. Rémy’s face contorted into a snarl as he recognized the intruder for what he was – a threat to his twisted sense of order.
“Sorcière!” Rémy shouted, pointing at the warlock with a trembling finger. Dozens of men, their faces a mix of fury and fear, turned and fixed their eyes on the warlock.
There was no turning back. The fate of the accused witches rested upon his shoulders, and he would do whatever it took to save them, even if it meant losing himself to the darkness.
“May the spirits protect me and guide my hand,” he prayed silently, preparing to unleash the full force of his terrible power.
The warlock braced himself as the fearful mob surged toward him like a tidal wave of humanity, their eyes burning with fervent zeal.
His heart pounded, but he refused to give in to the panic that threatened to consume him. The warlock flourished his hands and unleashed a torrent of wind, its howling force sending them tumbling back like leaves caught in a tempest.
“Back, I say!” he roared, resolute as stone. “I have come to put an end to this madness and free those who have been falsely accused!”
“Blasphème!” Rémy spat, his eyes narrow slits of hatred.
The warlock met Rémy’s gaze, feeling the weight of countless lives hanging in the balance. There was no more time for words. The moment had come to take action. With a deep breath, he closed his eyes, summoning the darkness that coursed through his veins like a river of shadows.
“May the spirits guide me,” the warlock murmured, opening his eyes to reveal orbs of pure darkness, blacker than the deepest abyss. He spread his arms wide, releasing the pent-up energy within him in a cataclysmic explosion of power.
The soundless blast tore through the church, its shockwave rippling outward like a pebble cast into a still pond. The air crackled with the stench of brimstone and ash as the magic flung the congregation against the walls with the force of a thousand hammers.
Rémy collapsed behind the pulpit. He was dead. So were a thousand more.
The warlock stood at the epicenter of the destruction, his expression impassive as the smell of frankincense flowed around the cathedral.
Of the many who had filled the church moments before, only the witches remained, unscathed by the warlock’s wrath. They stared at him in shock and awe, their eyes wide with disbelief.
“Go,” the warlock whispered, his voice barely audible above the susurrus of wind through the ruined church. “Leave this place, and let the spirits guide your paths.”
The witches hesitated, their fear of the dark energy emanating from the warlock palpable. Yet, they knew they had no choice but to trust this unexpected savior. Gathering their tattered garments, they huddled together and approached him cautiously.
“Who are you?” an older witch dared to ask, one of few who spoke Dorian’s native tongue, albeit with a thick French accent. Her hair was long and white. Her voice trembled with trepidation.
“An instrument of justice,” the warlock replied solemnly. “Now go, and let your lives be a testament to the end of this nightmare.”
“Forgivez-moi,” she murmured before stepping back, her eyes filling with tears. “But you must be sent from here to the new world, lest the darkness turn you into the kind of witch that justifies these people’s fear.”
A sudden tremor shook the ground beneath the warlock’s feet. His eyes widened, and he looked about in alarm as an ominous rumble filled the air. From the floor of the cathedral, littered with bodies, sprang forth a swirling violet vortex. The crackling energy that lined its edges licked at the stones of the church like hungry flames.
With a final surge of effort, the warlock wrenched free of the vortex’s grasp, only to find himself flung through the air and cast into the new world beyond. As he tumbled through the void, he could not help but wonder what lay in store for him on the other side and whether he would ever again know the light he had once cherished.
When at last he emerged, the warlock found himself in a dense forest, the trees towering above him like ancient sentinels. He clung to the trunk of a massive oak, its bark rough against his hands as he fought to steady himself.
“Help me,” he implored, his voice barely more than a whisper. “Save me from this darkness if you can.”
A hum of energy flowed from the tree. It momentarily soothed the warlock’s swelling angst, but that was all the tree could offer. He’d made his choice. He’d killed thousands, but how many more had he saved? He was already cursed. He’d already been alone. He could have sent himself back, but the witch was right. He was dangerous now, and he knew it. If the spirits willed, only time could wrest him back into the light.
Where was this dark wizard sent? Is he really a bad guy if what he did saved many? Find out the answer to these questions and more on October 12, 2023 when The Witch of the Woods: Hedge Witch Diaries Book 1 is released.

Here there be dragons – Weir Dragon Academy sneak peek!
Weir Dragon Academy Book 1: Wings of Shadow
Linden and Brackish are on their way to Weir Dragon Academy. What new adventures await the girls as they start high school?
The window at my back leaked lemon-tinted light around my shadow and shimmered against the fawn-stained pine art case. It was the only thing I needed to bring to Niagara and Weir Academy. Inside was my hoard. A collection of pigments more precious than gems and the tools to use them.
Brackish, one of my many sisters in all but genetics, stepped in front of me with her hands on her hips. She glanced down at the case, then locked her umber gaze on my face. I stared back but at her nose.
“Seriously, Linden? That’s all?”
“Yes? Miss Hertha said to take only what we needed. I need my paints, pencils, and pastels. That’s all.”
“Oh, Linden. She only meant to say we shouldn’t overpack.”
I tilted my head, wiggled my pinkies, then tilted my head to the other side. One irresistible set of symmetrical movements cut back like underbrush infringing on a woodland trail. An abnormality, although the last being who said that to my face was dead.
“Well, she could have used those words, right?”
“She wouldn’t, though. Not with her manners. Anyway, you need clothes at school. Hair ties. Shoes. Or did you mean to wash and dry the same outfit every night to wear the next day?”
“Petie said he always wore uniforms.”
“That’s the Annex, for the littler kids. We’re going to high school.”
“Oh. What do I do now, Brackish?”
“Pack up some overalls and stuff.”
“What if I make us late?”
“You won’t. I’ll help.”
She turned and headed across the room to the closet. I grabbed my art case before following.
“Still can’t believe they call this old cavern a closet, Linden.”
She was right. The entire below-deck area of the tall ship that rescued us from the horrifying island in the faerie realm was only slightly larger.
“Yeah.”
I set my art case beside the dresser I’d used for the last three and a half years. The fawn stain clashed with the ash mauve finish. I wrinkled my nose and put it off to one side instead. Then I opened a drawer.
Inside were several of the same fit and brand of T-shirts I always wore in a rainbow of colors. Some had tiny floral prints, and others didn’t. After scooping up an armful, I realized I didn’t have luggage to put them in.
Another of my pseudo-sisters came to my rescue with an already opened empty suitcase, calling in her musical voice, “Here, Linden!”
The deep forest green nylon fabric complemented Scald’s orange hair so much that I shook my head.
“You keep that. It looks better on you.”
“I’m not about to wear a suitcase, Linden. Besides, I chose this one because it reminds me of your wood magic.”
“Well, since you put it that way, okay. I’ll take it.”
I put the shirts inside. Scald giggled, opening and closing the lid while making munching noises.
“Om nom nom! Feed me more!”
I chuckled, then turned to open another drawer. This one was full of socks, all the same brand of slouchy crews in different colors, like the shirts. No seams on the toes, either. Scald repeated her performance with the suitcase after I tossed them in. I hesitated, worried they might fall out.
“Uh, I think I’ll get the rest done myself. Thanks.”
Scald set the case on top of the dresser, which I didn’t mind because ash mauve didn’t clash with green. Then she winked.
“Suit yourself. Literally. Get it? Suit? Yourself?”
I guffawed, finally tickled by her waggling eyebrows and goofy grin. Scald was always funny but seemed increasingly nervous about whether her jokes landed well until somebody laughed. My brain never clicked on why the way it did with colors.
Relieved at last, she snagged her guitar and keyboard cases from the corner before heading toward the hallway. Afterward, I packed away the seamless underthings from my top drawer. The case still wasn’t full. It was a good thing because I still hadn’t packed everything Brackish had mentioned.
“Overalls coming through!”
Brackish had at least five pairs draped over one arm, hangers clacking as she dodged past other excited girls, most too young to start high school with us. One exception was Crystal. She darted back and forth frantically with a single dusky pink leather dance shoe in her hand. I walked away from my dresser.
“Linden, where are you going?”
“Helping Crystal, just a second.”
Behind me, rustling clothes surrounded Brackish’s sigh. I kept going, walking deeper into the closet. The floor in here was the same ashy mauve as the dressers. That explained why Crystal hadn’t seen her dance shoe. For me, it stood out plain as day.
I scooped it up, then held the multi-textured leather and canvas shoe in both hands. When I stepped in front of Crystal, she dodged around me. I moved with her. Her long black tied-back hair bounced on either side of her head like a horse’s tail.
“Linden, please move. You understand this better than most. I can’t leave without my ballet slippers, and one’s missing. It’d be like you going away without your art case.”
I lifted my hand so the shoe was at eye level. “Here.”
“Oh goodness, thank you so much!”
I let her fling her arms around me, careful to keep my arms still so I wouldn’t drop her footwear. When she finished, I held the shoe out to her again. She took it with a smile clear and crisp as ice. Which made sense—that was her element.
“Linden, hair ties,” Brackish reminded me.
“Yes. They’re by the sink.”
“Let’s go.”
I followed her into the bathroom, which was about half the size of the closet. It was still bigger than Miss Saya’s old dorm room at the Gallows Hill boarding house. I tried not to worry, knowing we weren’t going there. Surely an Academy for dragons run by dragons would have more space for us in either form.
I paused in the doorway, waving at the golden bamboo stalk in the large decorative vase to one side. Faeries hung out there sometimes.
“The brownie isn’t here now, Linden.”
“I like to be nice just in case.”
“Good idea. Anyway, how many of these do you want to bring?”
I gazed at the clear container, fascinated by the contrast between its gleaming surface and the deep beige of Brackish’s skin. The elastics and the container varied in size, shape, and color, proving nearly as mesmerizing.
“Is there room to take the whole thing?”
“I guess. If you don’t mind only one or two pairs of shoes.”
“That’s fine. I kind of don’t love shoes.”
Brackish only nodded instead of reminding me I’d repeated that sentiment at least once a day since coming to the mundane and having to wear them. She must have more on her mind than usual. I pondered this as we went back to the closet. Should my mind be stuffed with worries, too?
After she stowed the hair accessory container in the bottom of my suitcase, Brackish leaned down and pulled out the low drawer containing my footwear. Miss Hertha and Miss Saya had been generous with my attire. I’d thanked them many times but felt bad for not wearing so many of the pieces they’d offered me.
“Let me guess. You want the high tops and the work boots.”
“I’ll wear the work boots, pack the high tops. But yes, you’re right. Thank you for helping me pack and knowing me so well.”
I stepped into the boots without bothering to tie the laces. Miss Saya had swapped the regular kind for elastic ones so I wouldn’t forget and trip.
“Back at you, Linden.” Brackish tilted her head, then waved at someone behind me. “Could you pay it forward by helping Zillah out? I think she’s having trouble over there.”
I nodded, then went, pretending not to notice Brackish stuffing a pair of dress flats in alongside the high tops. A year ago, I might have argued over that. Uncle Cosmo, no blood relation but an important magical shifter, had convinced me otherwise. As I thought of him, his voice came to mind, along with the conversation.
They’re only trying to care for you.
But I don’t need the things they’re offering me. What else can I do besides try to convince them?
Make a game of it.
What kind of game?
A tracking one. For me, it helps to count the kindnesses. The best part is when you realize you’ve lost track.
Can I color them instead?
As long as the method works for you, it won’t fail.
I grinned while walking out of the bathroom, coloring Brackish’s covert suitcase operation a comforting shade of brown, like soil around a new sapling.
Brackish had been right. In the bedroom we all shared, Zillah stood frowning at her bed. The particolored pillows she collected littered it. She clutched the two largest, one under each dark brown arm. After reaching her side, I gazed at them with her.
“What’s wrong, Zillah?”
“Only two of my Squishmallows will fit, and I can’t bear leaving any behind.”
“I understand.”
“Thanks, Linden, but I need a solution right now.”
“I don’t have one, but Petrichor probably does. Why not ask him?”
A throat cleared nearby. I glanced aside to see a familiar round face wearing a smile quick as lightning, framed by shaggy brown hair in need of a trim. A pencil held it back on one side, tucked behind the boy’s ear.
“Petie probably does what?”
Zillah moved beside me. I looked up to see her hand on her cheek, half covered with the deep purple clouds of her curly hair.
“Oh! I didn’t want to bother you, Petie.”
“It’s not a bother, ever.”
“Zillah can’t bring all of her Squishmallows, Petrichor. Do you have any ideas?”
“Hmm. The main thing about them is that they’re squishy, right?”
Zillah said nothing, only picked up the nearest cutely designed pillow plush and handed it over. It was mostly sky blue with bright yellow and glittering white accents, face shaped vaguely like an animal’s with a round, piggish nose.
Petrichor turned it over in his hands three times. Then, he pressed it between them. After that, he let it go back to its original shape, chuckled, then extended his index finger and tapped the pillow’s embroidered nose.
“Boop!”
I laughed, glimpsing the ceiling. Beside me, I heard a click as Zillah swallowed before opening her mouth to release a higher-than-normal-pitched giggle. I imagined it as a tiny lavender butterfly. Petrichor handed the Squishmallow back to her, smiling again.
“All we need is a few Zip-lock bags and a vacuum cleaner. You can bring every last one of these, Zill. I’ll make sure of it.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I want to. So, I’m doing it. I’ll be back.”
Zillah hung her head, curls obscuring her dusky face like fog on the lawn at twilight. I patted her shoulder because I knew she took comfort in gestures like that.
“Linden, thanks, but I want to be alone right now.”
“Okay.”
I left, unsure why she wanted that or whether I’d done something wrong. My life was like that over the last few years after getting out from under old Ludovico’s strict rules and patterns. I looked up to see Brackish wheeling my suitcase out into the hall. She didn’t have my art case.
I dashed back into the closet, nearly falling over with relief as I saw it where I’d left it. After avoiding a tumble, I wrapped my hand around the familiar carved wooden handle and brought it through the room I’d inhabited for the last three years.
Across the hall, I spied Petie’s roommates, the twins Eshed and Uri. They leaned against the wall together. I would have waved a greeting, but Eshed might have missed that. He wasn’t completely blind anymore, something the grownups called legally blind. I wheeled my suitcase across the hall instead.
“Hi.” I waved as I spoke, knowing he saw movement easiest closer up and in front of him.
“Hello there, Linden.”
Eshed grinned in my general direction. The tiny blue dragonet on his shoulder peeked out from behind his ear, grinning as well. I found him easy to talk to because his eyes never rested on mine. Whether he knew that or couldn’t see where they were, I didn’t know.
Uri could hear fine but spoke with his hands, so I watched them sign a greeting.
“Hey Linden. You got all your art supplies?”
“Yes. I hope they have a common room at our dorm so we can work and play together like we do here in the studio.”
“We’ll see when we get there.”
“Like everything else in all three worlds,” Eshed agreed.
I looked down, counting the bags at their feet. There were two blue, three brown, and one hard case with Eshed’s etched Casio keyboard inside. Both boys had packed more than me. Something was missing. I looked again.
“Doesn’t Petrichor have any bags?”
“Says he only needs his satchel,” Eshed said.
“Headmistress Celine already has everything he needs at Weir so that satchel’s his school bag. It has his recent inventions and journal inside,” Uri signed.
“Oh no, I didn’t bring a school bag.”
A tapping sound like sea glass pebbles dropped one by one into a marble bowl sounded behind me. A voice like sunlight glinting off aqua waves chased it.
“Supplies are taken care of and sent ahead, not to worry. Petrichor made his choice based on personal preference.”
“Oh, thank you, Miss Saya.”
I relaxed, picturing what my school bag would look like in my mind without really meaning to. A leather satchel like Petrichor’s, but in a warm olive or brown shade instead of the deliberately faded denim blue he favored.
Hazy white and gray noise echoed from the bedroom’s doorway into the marble hallway. Miss Saya turned, raising one eyebrow with her opposite hand on her hip. Somehow, Uri correctly guessed her unspoken question.
“It’s Petie rescuing Zillah again,” he signed.
“With a vacuum cleaner?” Saya blinked.
“Squishmallows,” I added.
“What in the world?”
Miss Saya paced toward the doorway. I left my suitcase behind and followed, peering past her to see what she found there. My art case came with me.
The rest of my sisters stood in a semicircle around Zillah’s bunk, watching Petrichor use the vacuum to remove air from the plastic bags he’d stuffed her Squishmallows into. The cluster of plushies inside compressed, making square rainbow pancakes of Zillah’s most prized possessions.
“Brilliant work!” Miss Saya clapped twice.
“It’s not really. I got this idea from an infomercial if you can believe it.” Petrichor chuckled.
I wasn’t sure what was funny. Everyone’s favorite lightning dragon never seemed to get enough sleep, spending too many nights in front of a screen.
“You’re too humble, Petie. You’re saving my life here,” Zillah replied.
“I’m not too humble, but if I’m saving even the tiniest portion of your life, then everything’s working as intended.”
I stood watching the colorful plush items, trying to predict which colors would come out on top, the sides, or in the middle. He repeated the process with five more bags, which easily fit into the largest of Zillah’s suitcases on top of her clothes and shoes.
After compressing the last bag, Petrichor unplugged the vacuum and dashed out of the room with it. I gazed down at the suitcase as Zillah zipped it closed. When I looked up, everyone else had gone into the hall, including Miss Saya.
Zillah grabbed her suitcases, juggling them with the grace and ease I never developed. The amulet she wore looked like the ones every other hatchling child here wore. It did the same things too, letting us shapeshift while keeping clothes and bags intact, plus acting as magical identification to cross the Canadian border later.
Hers had an added feature, an enchantment to let everyone she met remember her. The large purple amethyst bounced against her shirt as she hurried through the doorway. I followed, making sure not to crowd her.
She didn’t like surprises and never had the entire time I’d known her. One thing we had in common, although my dislike was mildly evasive annoyance and hers intense bouts of fight or flight. Along with the oppressive history all the girls and the youngest boys shared.
Out in the hall, the twins had already left. Scald, Crystal, and Brackish too. A portal was open within the mark in the hallway. A whispered rushing sound wafted through it along with the soft cerulean humidity of an impossible amount of fresh water.
Petrichor stood to one side, bowing at the waist as Zillah stepped through laden with enough plum-colored suitcases to scarcely notice the gesture. He looked up as I stepped forward, face dragging with weariness.
I had a vague sense of new dimness in him, like the back of my eyelids when I closed them after staring at a light for too long.
“Whatever’s wrong, it’ll be okay,” I told him.
“I hope you’re right, Linden. Even if you’re not and things aren’t okay, I’ll live.”
I kept walking, baffled but relieved. I didn’t need to have lived his situation to know he spoke the truth about it. At the end of most days, Uncle Cosmo helped me sift through these mysteries. He wouldn’t be at Weir with us or even in this realm, and Uncle Crow didn’t understand me nearly as well.
Maybe a teacher or other adult there would. That thought led me to the transportation hub on campus at Weir Academy, drifting along in my wake like a lacy white cloud for the next talonful of months.
School is about to start for Linden, Brackish, and their friends and it’s bound to be full of challenges and adventures. Preorder your copy now to join them on September 27 when Weir Dragon Academy: Wings of Shadow is released!

A Second Birth in This Snippet of Be A Hero or Die Book 1
Heaven’s Peak: A Hero or Die Book 1
The world he once knew is gone. He has been selected to fight for humanity. However, right now he simply trying to remember how to breath
Be a Hero or Die –
He could see images, moments, and times that brought him both joy and sorrow, but he couldn’t remember why.
His body felt heavy, and his mind was muddled and cloudy. The images faded, replaced by a mute darkness. It swallowed the images like a fog, claiming them for itself. It made him sad to think of them going away.
He felt alone and afraid without them, so he wanted to stop the darkness from claiming them. He tried to hold onto them, but he could not stop his memories from slipping into the void of oblivion like a dream fading in the morning light.
He gasped because that was what people did when they had almost no oxygen in their lungs and needed to breathe. It was fortunate that he could remember breathing since he was currently making great use of that memory.
Air rushed into his mouth, filled his lungs, and rushed out again. This activity seemed to be located more in the front of his head than in any other part of him, which was also fortunate since that was far from his heart. It would have been bad if that organ were subject to this rush of air.
“Good, another one wakes!” a voice chirped. “Beginning to wonder if the vital readers were making a mistake. How are you feeling?”
The boy muttered. He knew words, but that didn’t mean his mouth could form them. His lids opened and fluttered, but even when he could hold them open, he was only greeted by more darkness. Had he gone blind?
A figure stood in front of him. It was not much brighter than the rest of the room, but it was different. There was a flicker.
“Ah, eye movement!” the voice mused. “That’s better. I’m starting to get some color now.”
The figure moved closer to him, examining his body. Its shoulders slumped as if it had been holding its composure for a long time. Then it moved away and said, “Can you hear me? I have something important to tell you.”
“Y-y-yes,” he responded. His tongue was flat on the bottom of his mouth.
“English is your first language, right?” the other person questioned. “Seems so. I told him the new formula needed more testing. Don’t feel so self-conscious about all this. Your peers didn’t fare much better once they came around.”
The figure raised a hand and waved it. “Can you follow my arm?”
Everything still appeared black to him, but he could follow the outline of the person’s arm, albeit mostly with his eyes. Straining his neck only allowed him to tumble his head from side to side, and gravity did most of the work.
“That’s it,” the voice soothed. “See how you’re turning your head? Even your feet are moving! I bet your toes feel like they’re wiggling. That’s a good sign.” Whoever was speaking sounded very mature.
The boy turned his head, but the twisting didn’t get much further than a shallow wiggle of his shoulders before gravity tugged his neck, and his head dropped forward.
“It’s all right,” the voice said. “It is a start. Let’s get you acclimatized and see if we can’t help you out with some tasty medical aids.”
The boy heard a loud hissing, and his shoulders twitched in surprise. He hoped it was mechanical hissing since the only alternative he could think of was snakes. Fearing whatever could make that noise was probably wise, but the idea of being paralyzed while snakes slithered around him struck him as a much worse problem.
“We have a spike in heart rate,” the voice mused.
Dim lights glowed around him. After being in darkness for so long, they were blinding. He shut his eyes again and raised his arms to shield himself. Wait! His arms worked now.
“Ah, good! More motor functions. I was worried that I might have given you too many vitamins in one go. Trust me, we aren’t usually so careless. This is a trial of a new hibernation serum, and we haven’t worked out all the kinks.”
“Hi-hibernation serum? What’s that?” the boy asked.
“Wonderful! Actual words. You really are coming around well.” The figure clapped its hands, but they didn’t make a sound. “Tell me, how are you feeling now? Any other pains?”
Though his eyes were dry and scratchy, he could blink without pain. Was it dark? Warm? He sat up and bumped his head. He stopped and looked around. The room was small and white with steel fixtures. “I’m still heavy but no longer in pain. Where am I?”
“A pod. No need to worry. This was just to monitor you until you came around. Your normal sleeping accommodations are…well, another pod, but much more spacious.”
The lights brightened. “I should get you out now so we can test the lower half of your body. Hold on just a moment.”
Another loud hiss followed by several clanking sounds. The large piece in front of him slid out before rising. His body twitched and went rigid.
He saw the glowing humanoid figure in front of him. It was long rather than tall, a gray light with white lines of light like markings in a strange pattern. It was dressed in black but glowed a cool white. Its eyes were pools of darkness and its expression was flat, but it offered an unnatural smile. It wasn’t that the smile didn’t seem genuine, but given its appearance, it couldn’t help but seem sinister.
“Welcome to the land of the living.” Its mouth did not move as it spoke. It ran a hand along its body. “In a manner of speaking, that is. I have been told my appearance is ghostly. I often think to change it, but the irony is too enjoyable.”
It pointed at him and giggled. “The faces you humans make! I wish you could appreciate it, but your screams indicate you don’t.”
“‘You humans?’ You aren’t human?” He wished he could close the pod and stop staring at this creature.
The being tapped the side of its head. “I would have thought that obvious. We don’t have you marked as one of the intelligent students for this cycle, but I didn’t think we would have to start from zero.”
This prompted a number of questions, but with everything running through his mind at risk of consuming him, he decided it was best to focus. “Then what are you?”
The figure placed its hand on its chest and bowed, the gesture flawless but not stiff. “I am an AI Simulant, called ‘Sims’ by most who have resided here for a time. I am the combination guide, mentor, caretaker, and friend of all students here at Heaven’s Peak.”
Heaven’s Peak. That name stirred something in him, and Sims took notice. “Ah, a bit of memory is coming back, is it?”
The boy felt his head. “Sort of. I seem to recognize that name. Wait, name! What is my name? Who am I?”
His hand smacked into the pod’s translucent wall as the world swam around him. In his shock, he leaned forward and stumbled out of the pod, landing on his knees as the sudden weight made his legs give out.
Sims winced. “Ouch, that looked painful. Granted, I have never felt pain myself, but I have been told it is simply awful. Keeps me from trying it.”
He made his way in front of the boy. “You’ll have to get yourself up, I’m afraid.” He placed his hand on the boy’s hand and brought it down, the hand disappearing through him. “No tangibility, you see.”
The boy attempted to stand to no avail. The most he could do was shift to the side and sit on his hip. “I can’t…I can’t remember my own name.”
“That is typical of the hibernation serum,” Sims stated, putting his gangly arms behind him and clasping his hands. “Amnesia, and a severe case at that. I wouldn’t be too worried. Details like your name will come along naturally and usually quickly unless you are one of the critical cases. But you aren’t drooling on yourself, so it is just looking like a severe case. Perfectly normal.”
“Perfectly normal? That doesn’t seem right!”
Sims cocked its head. “How would you know? You are an amnesiac.” He turned and lifted his arms in the air. “Like I said, this is normal. Which is why we have prepared explanations for you once you get out of the pod.”
Large screens appeared in the air. Sims waved his hands to move them around before picking one out and bringing it forward.
The boy sat back in amazement as Sims stepped to the side and pointed at the screen. “I used to give the explanations myself, but I found it tedious after the first twenty-seven cycles. If you have ever wondered if artificial life has patience, the answer is yes, and it is shorter than you probably fear. Please pay attention so we can keep the questions to a minimum.”
Sims reached toward the screen. It shrank considerably, allowing Sims to hold it in the palm of his hand. Before the boy could say it was now too small to see, Sims turned and hurled it at the boy, and his vision was suddenly engulfed by an image of a planet of blue and green.
He knew that planet. It was his planet.
Earth.
A booming voice startled him. It wasn’t Sims’ voice. It was much deeper and spoke plainly.
This is your home, a world that has existed for billions of years. In that time, your species made great advancements. Technology, society, culture, and government progressed through leaps and bounds throughout the rise of humanity. Your kind strove for utopia, but it never had the chance to see if it could truly achieve it.
As it spoke, images constantly appeared on the screen. He could only catch a few at a time, but they were filled with devastation, and the monstrous beasts stuck with him. They were familiar.
Two-hundred and fifty-two years ago, an event devastated your planet. An infection that rotted the very ground many people called their home and soon began infesting your people as well.
The screen flashed bright, vibrant colors, then darkened to gray. It showed lush jungles, trees with leaves the size of a man, growing high into the sky and casting deep shadows on the forest floor. They crept over fallen tree trunks and slunk through high grass. The jungles were full of motion since animals were eating and mating and hunting.
The video changed to show trees turning gray and shedding their leaves as winter storms battered them. Their branches died and fell to the forest floor. The sky was white and gray, choked with pollution and endless smoke. Trees withered, embers rained down onto the land, and everything became ash on the earth.
People walked through this world. Some were sick with a disease that caused holes in their bodies that were filled with crawling insects and squirming black worms. Some changed into something else entirely. They mutated, becoming monstrous beasts with wings that carried them on updrafts, fins that propelled them through dark waters, or spiked skin.
The screen went dark, then flashed to a new scene, showing an enormous plant-like creature reaching up above the clouds to touch heaven itself.
He watched in horror as humans transformed into beings that could no longer be called human. Their skin turned black and extra limbs sprouted from their backs, or they transformed into serpents with a multitude of red eyes.
Others dissolved into puddles of black goo, and then a massive worm would form, with a single large oculus at the tip of its head. Others produced shells and grew five extra feet. Horns burst from their heads like blackened crowns.
They were joined by wolves and deer that transformed into terrifying versions of their former selves. The long snouts and thin mouths of the deer developed double rows of hooked teeth, and the skin pulled back on their skulls, leaving only long, twitching tendrils. The wolves’ fur grew upward into sharp spikes, and their legs bent in strange angles. All attacked and mutilated any nearby humans or animals to sate their newfound terrifying hunger.
Flocks of birds twisted into humanoid shapes with hawks’ beaks and faces that looked like pixies’. Centipedes, snakes, and cockroaches grew stingers for fangs, multitudes of eyes, and leathery wings, and there were beasts from nightmares.
For over a century, your kind fought the infected, but though your weapons and technologies allowed you to combat these horrors, they could not tame or cure them. You were forced to withdraw to the lands where the blight had yet to reach and build sanctuaries to hide yourselves, waiting for a time when you could reclaim your world.
The monsters were ravenous. They soon devoured any resources that remained in their lands and set their sights on these sanctuaries and the feast that lay within. Though your walls and weapons defended you from many attacks, they brought with them the same infection that turned them into monsters. It was not uncommon for you to win a battle only to be brought down by many of those seeking sanctuary as they became the very monsters from which they ran.
A video of a destroyed city covered in monsters shifted to an image of a gold pyramid with a halo of blue light around the top.
That is when the Engineer arrived, bringing with him his scientific vessel and the hope of salvation. This station was named Heaven’s Peak by humanity when it brought on board those who still had the will to fight and turned them into the hope for Earth’s future—the Guardians.
The monsters were pushed back by humans with amazing weapons and technology, facing beasts three times their size and matching or surpassing their strength, among other fantastic feats. Even with his mind still rattled, the boy knew this was far beyond what he could accomplish, what anyone could accomplish.
Seeing these Guardians in action made a warm glow spread in his body. He felt elated. Something about them inspired him, all the dread of seeing those monsters being pushed away in their presence.
Those with the potential to be Guardians are brought to Heaven’s Peak. It is here that those who can guide Earth back to its bright future are trained and prepared for their harrowing work. Not all succeed, but their sacrifice is an inspiration for their peers.
This was less like a history feature or documentary and more like an action movie.
Wait, what was that last part? His vision went dark, and the images disappeared. He was back in the room with Sims.
They breezed right past that last part. We will find out what it means to potentially be sacrificed for “the greater good” on September 20th when Heaven’s Peak: Be a Hero or Die Book 1 is released.
