Looking Through Rose-Colored Glasses in This Snippet of Piercing The Veil Book 1
Piercing the Veil Book 1: Dangerous Opportunities
It doesn’t look good for Natalie, Rich, and Lucas. With only two days until their life as they know it is over, can they keep it together long enough to make their technology work?
Dangerous Opportunities –
Bunching her hand into a fist, Natalie fought the urge to punch the computer screen in front of her or scream down the phone.
“It sounds like an amazing project, Miss Kitson,” the guy was saying. “It does. But it’s not finished or working yet, and I can’t invest in something that isn’t ready to go when there are a lot of young startups promising the same thing. I hope you understand.” He hung up, the fifth one today, telling her the same thing.
Rich had the good sense to look busy when she turned and glared. Instead of thumping the screen, she got up, punched the back of her chair, and stomped toward the kitchen to make another cup of coffee.
As she passed Rich’s desk, his hand twitched in the direction of his mug, but he thought better of it and paused. She grabbed it anyway, leaving him to tap away behind her.
Their other partner in business was Lucas, the guy in the front garden testing their product for the umpteenth time that day. Lucas thought they were close to ready on the AR glasses strapped to his head.
Entering the kitchen, Natalie had to fight the urge to scream again. It looked like a bomb had hit it. It hadn’t exploded, just splattered food, plates, cups, and coffee grounds everywhere. Then the bomb disposal team showed up, pulled apart the bomb, so its innards were everywhere, decided hazmat suits were needed, and refused to come back and risk anyone’s life in the mold that had grown since.
It was a mess.
Pretty sure that this meant their deposit on the rental they were in was gone as well, she did her best to find a small, cleanish space and fixed some more coffee. As she opened the cupboard to get more coffee for the machine, she frowned.
They had one packet of coffee left, two packets of ramen, and a leftover avocado that also looked like it was growing a new culture.
“We need to do another shop run before the end of the day,” she called to Rich.
As she glanced through the door, she saw him hold his hand out and stick his thumb up, eyes glued to something on his screen. Rolling her eyes, she tried not to rant at him. It wouldn’t be the first time that day, but the truth was, they were so close to being screwed that they didn’t have time to yell at each other anymore.
While she’d spent all day searching for an investor, Rich had spent the day trying to find someone who might commit to buying units. He was looking at marketing stuff she didn’t understand, and she sometimes wondered if he understood it either.
It left Lucas trying to figure out why their prototype glasses did everything but the thing they needed them to do.
“I think I’ve found a… Oh, no, never mind,” Rich backtracked as Natalie finally got the machine going.
“That’s got to be the seventh time you’ve said that today.” She stomped back to her desk to wait for the coffee.
“Hey… I’m trying to help. I know we’ve got two days as well, you know.”
“Two days and no way we’re getting the deposit back. I hope your bathroom isn’t as bad as you and Lucas have made the kitchen.”
“I’m sure it’s not worse than yours.” Rich sat back, the computer momentarily forgotten as he got up and wandered into the kitchen.
“Mine’s clean,” she yelled after him, feeling better as she heard him clatter and bang as he found a spoon, cleaned it, and finished off the coffee for them.
He was coming back out with two steaming mugs when a yelp came from the front yard.
“You okay?” Natalie called, hoping the answer was yes until she’d had her coffee.
There was no reply.
She looked at Rich, who looked toward the front garden. They took a sip of their drinks and waited. If they decided to put coffee above the well-being of their friend, then Lucas could be pissed off at both of them.
Another minute passed with no more noise. Natalie tried to sit with her drink and open the next document she had on the next investor. One of them was going to need to find some money, or they were going to be screwed and she was going to have to go back to daddy as a total failure.
She shuddered. Not happening. If she had to beg the final investor she had on her list and come up with some story about being in danger of being sold to some drug lord or something, she’d do it.
“You okay, Lucas?” Rich yelled again, also ignoring his workload. It wasn’t like either of them was making any progress.
“Yeah. I think I might finally have this thing doing something.”
Rich sighed, and Natalie rolled her eyes. It wasn’t the first time she’d heard that either.
“If this works finally…” Rich shook his head.
“I know. You want a girl on each arm and endless champagne. I’d settle for a clean house and something decent for dinner that isn’t pizza, takeout, or ramen.”
Sitting, Natalie took another mouthful of the black coffee, grateful they hadn’t run out of that yet. She made a mental note to check if they had the money for any more food shopping as she read her notes on the next investor option.
She was feeling more depressed, knowing this woman would be the hardest to persuade yet, when she heard another cry and a clatter from the front of the house.
Sighing, she turned away from the document and took the opportunity to do something else.
“Lucas, whatever you’re doing, it had better be making a difference.”
Her sneakers made a light patter as she stepped to the front bay window. At first, she didn’t spot Lucas. Their tech guy wasn’t standing in the middle of the garden where he normally was, although his toolbox stood open in the middle of the brown grass.
Fear crept into her mind as she looked around. What was he playing at?
She spotted him on the other side of the road. He was walking down the street away from them. He went farther before his mouth fell open, and he stared at something.
Looking like someone who remembered they’d left a stove on in the house, he clapped his hands over his mouth, turned, and ran back to the house so fast that he didn’t check the road and almost got hit. The driver slammed on the brakes and swore, but Lucas didn’t stop or acknowledge him.
Running out into the front yard, Natalie stopped Lucas in his tracks.
“What the fuck are you thinking, moron? Do you want to get yourself killed? Or worse, have our prototype smooshed by a car?”
“Nice to know what matters to you most,” Lucas replied, but he wasn’t as annoyed as he’d normally have been. He was busy looking at the world through the AR glasses they were developing.
After he stared at her for a couple of seconds, Natalie folded her arms and looked disapproving. He pulled them off.
“Okay, I think you need to see this.” He grinned, the first time she’d seen him smile in days.
She raised her eyebrows, unsure what had given him some confidence and merriment back.
“Rich. You should come out here and see this too.”
“You got it working?” he yelled back, still somewhere in the gloom behind Natalie.
She wasn’t sure what to do. Should she put it on and try it or let Rich do so, knowing the two guys were far more passionate about the level of technology than she was?
Lucas decided for her, thrusting it into Rich’s hands as he appeared in the doorway.
“Check this out, man. You’re going to be able to market this.”
Lucas’ voice carried genuine excitement for the first time in a long time, and she wanted to rip the glasses out from Rich’s hands and look. Instead, she waited as the two men had one of their geek-out moments.
“How did you get it to show the overlay properly?” Rich asked as he stepped outside with it on.
Lucas almost shrugged. “This and that. I took out a safety protocol or two. Nothing major. Didn’t want it to get in the way of the program making some random decisions and being able to function. I must have set up something wrong. It’s like there were too many constraints, and it couldn’t do the basics of what was needed first.”
Natalie frowned. She didn’t like the sound of removing safety constraints. It seemed like they shouldn’t do that, but if it was going to get them to a finished product, even if it had some quirks and bugs to figure out, it might let her call her investors back and see if they’d bite.
“Okay,” she relented. “Let’s take this thing for a spin and show us what you’re getting.”
It looks like they made it work, or did they? Find out on March 10th when Piercing The Veil Book 1: Dangerous Opportunities is released. Until then head over to Amazon and pre-order today.

A Battle for Magic Begins in this Snippet of The Undoubtable Rose Beaufont Book 1
The Undoubtable Rose Beaufont Book 1: The Mysterious Daughter
Kaitlyn thought she knew who she was. She thought she knew her only mission was to stop the spread of magic
The Mysterious Daughter snippet –
Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Los Angeles, California, United States
There are those born with magic and those born without it, and since the dawn of time, it’s caused a divide. The modern age has changed all that. Mortals can finally have magic, but at a price.
The void between the lust for power and the allure of magic is where a witch is born. There is a place inside every mortal that’s empty and meant to stay that way. If they fill that space with darkness, they are compensated with magic.
Magicians do not understand this emptiness, for they are born full of power and wield magic easily.
The history books don’t tell of the silent battles mortals and magicians waged. For centuries, they’ve fought for power—mortals holding the balance over magic and magicians holding the ability to use it.
A new era has dawned—a darker one.
Many mortals, bent on having magic once and for all, have burned out their souls to become witches and warlocks, all so they can be powerful. They wish to rule the streets, portal anywhere on the globe, create fire from nothing, and make their every desire come true. It comes at a price and will invariably end with a war.
Kaitlyn Harkness’ long cloak was soaked from the rain and stomping through puddles in the old cemetery that seemed to go on for miles. She didn’t allow that to slow her down as she ran through the grass, weaving between gravestones. Kaitlyn believed the figures she was tracking were ahead, although she couldn’t see them since they had hidden themselves using magic.
A threatening scream cut through the chilly night air, making her halt. She threw her back against the walls of a mausoleum, grateful for the protection. Kaitlyn couldn’t hunt down people she couldn’t see, but all that was about to change.
In the Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s ambient light, Kaitlyn pulled out the only thing that could help her. It was a thick leatherbound book full of handwritten notes. Most wouldn’t be able to make out the messy cursive words, but Kaitlyn could because she’d written every letter in that book.
It had taken Kaitlyn Harkness over twenty years to track down every curse and incantation the witches of the Shadow Walker coven used and to discover the counterspells. Nothing had been more important for the woman, though.
As a Mortal Seven for the House of Fourteen, it had become her life’s mission to hunt down witches and stop them. It hadn’t been easy because Kaitlyn didn’t have magic as a mortal. Unlike a witch, she wasn’t about to burn out her soul for that power.
No, Kaitlyn had decided long ago that she wouldn’t fight fire with fire. She’d do it with knowledge.
Finally, after years of tracking the witches, she had every spell and ward the Shadow Walker coven used to curse, hide, and elude her. She could stop them and the crimes they committed against mortals and magicians alike. Finally, she could do it without resorting to violence or magic.
She had outsmarted the witches of the Shadow Walker coven and more importantly, their leader, Mefora Payne. Soon that soulless witch would be locked away, and the war between witches and magicians in Los Angeles would be over.
A lightning bolt streaked through the night sky, illuminating the gravestones surrounded by palm trees. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery was a strange place for many reasons.
It wasn’t only a place where the dead were cremated and buried. It was also an iconic location, full of history and power. Paramount Pictures movie studios and a venue for festivals and concerts bordered the cemetery.
Kaitlyn thought it was strange that people wanted to party in one of the oldest cemeteries in Los Angeles among the dead. However, that wasn’t what made the Hollywood Forever Cemetery so important.
It was also one of the anchor locations for the Shadow Walker coven’s magic. That meant it contributed to the power used to create their wicked spells. Ironically, it was where others could zap them of their magic. Kaitlyn had stumbled across that information during her investigations and chronicled it in her complete history of the witch coven.
Fondly, Kaitlyn ran her hand down the book’s cover before drawing a steadying breath. It was time. After tonight, the witches of the Shadow Walker coven would no longer rule the streets of Los Angeles. They wouldn’t recruit naïve mortals to burn out their souls and join them. They would all lose their magic forever.
A witch without magic was nothing. They weren’t mortals since they’d traded their souls for magical powers. Without that, they were harmless.
Flipping through the waterproof pages, Kaitlyn found the counterspell she needed. It was simply words, but spoken in the right place at the right time in front of the coven, it ended them. Although Kaitlyn didn’t have magic, she’d figured out how to stop it.
Repeating the words in her head, Kaitlyn shut the book, slipping it under one arm. It was almost midnight, the exact time she needed it to be. It was on the night of a coven meeting, meaning they were all there.
Pulling off the pouch given to her by a powerful magician, Kaitlyn opened it and poured its contents into the palm of her hand. Before the powder could get wet, Kaitlyn blew hard, making it fly out in all directions, carried by a magical force. Although the woman didn’t have magic, she could use potions and artifacts to create spells and did for only one reason—to stop the Shadow Walker coven.
All over the cemetery, one by one, women and men appeared. They’d been there all along but had been invisible to her due to a magical spell.
Shock dawned on the witches’ and warlocks’ gaunt faces as they realized she had countered their magic. She had seen them, and that meant the next step could happen…
Shrieks of protest echoed all around the cemetery, but Kaitlyn didn’t budge. She knew fear was taking over because the Shadow Walker coven was about to lose its magic
It certainly seems like Kaitlyn has what it takes to stop the coven WITHOUT the use of magic. Can it all really be that simple? Find out on March 3rd when The Undoubtable Rose Beaufont: The Mysterious Daughter is released. Until then head over to Amazon and pre-order it today.

Say Goodbye to the Glory Days in This Snippet of Go Ask Your Mother Book 1
Go Ask Your Mother Book 1: Sorcerer’s Playground
Tom is just a regular guy living in the suburbs. He has some stories from his glory days as a battlemage. But those days are long gone… right?
Sorcerer’s Playground snippet –
I kicked my feet up on the ottoman. That might have been the hardest battle of my life. No, I didn’t take down an evil sorcerer with aspirations of world domination. I didn’t defeat a creature from another realm. Sure, I was a battlemage, but those skills didn’t serve me when it came to putting my three spawn to bed on a school night.
Twenty-one years ago, I saved the world. Today, I struggled to keep up with the dishes. Yeah, I was the battlemage who took down Caedes the Destroyer. Now I was the forty-two-year-old father of three boys who worked his butt off each day to get to this moment.
The kids were in bed. The house was quiet. Finally, I could enjoy a little alone time with Katerine, better known as Kat.
No, we weren’t going to make love. We were both too exhausted for that. After ten years of blissful marriage, we had our evening routine. The best part of the day.
Put the boys to bed, kick up our feet, and catch up on our latest shows. Tonight it was Grey’s Anatomy.
I couldn’t wait to find out who was sleeping with who this season. I think Kat and I experienced our love life vicariously through those fictional doctors. Chances were good we’d fall asleep before the end of the show, but what was the difference, anyway?
The same thing happened the last time we tried to get in a little hanky-panky. Kat fell asleep mid-tryst. I wasn’t offended. I was frigging relieved. So far, I hadn’t thrown my back out. Maybe I didn’t get to finish, but for me, that’s a win. It meant I could go to sleep, too. When you are raising boys of nine, five, and three, you take your sleep (and your brief moments of sanity) when you can get it.
I don’t mean to complain. I loved my family more than the world. The love I had for those boys made every second of chaos more than worth it. I was more in love with my wife now than I was the day we got married—even if our moments of intimacy were fewer and farther between.
Kat snuggled up next to me on the couch and I started the show.
Whaaaaaahhh!
I sighed. “Sounds like Elliot.” He was my youngest.
Kat kissed me on the cheek. “You have to work early, Tom. I’ll take this.”
I kissed my wife on the forehead. “Love ya.”
“Love you, too.”
I was supposed to go straight to bed. That’s what Kat expected. Instead, I took a moment and went out to the garage. I was a tool guy. I worked for a tool rental company. Store manager. I didn’t have every tool I needed, because I could always grab whatever I needed from work. Somehow, though, my work bench was a constantly cluttered mess. I reached for a long dusty box on my shelf.
It held my wand, which I hadn’t used since the day I vanquished Caedes. I’d bound him to an arcane prison and buried him beneath the ruins of an old warehouse in downtown St. Louis. In the years that followed, the place was leveled and they put a park there. I still took the kids there on occasion. I knew that somewhere deep beneath our feet was a sorcerer who’d nearly destroyed the world. Was he still alive? It was hard to believe he was, but as a master of the dark arts, I’d always suspected he’d find a way to escape. He never did.
After my victory, they threw a parade in my honor. I did all the media rounds. I even went on Jay Leno. I had my fifteen minutes of fame. At the time, I assumed that some other vile foe would eventually rise and I’d be the one to thwart his insidious schemes, but it never happened.
My wand went into a box. I had a name for my wand. Its name was Wand. I know, not especially creative. But when I held it, the thing came to life, almost as if it had a mind of its own.
I didn’t need Wand to access arcane power. I was born to a family of mages. The power was passed on from father to son. My boys hadn’t manifested any power yet, but someday they could.
When our oldest boy, Elijah, was born I promised Kat that I was done. We wanted to give him a normal life. I doubled down on that promise when Ezra was born and when Elliot came along nothing needed to be said. I’d always be a mage. I couldn’t deny it. I was Tom Gregory, the most powerful mage born to my family in generations. I saved the world once. They sold action figures bearing my likeness. Six months later, the world moved on. The endorsement deals stopped coming in. I had to get a job, so I applied at AAA Tool Rental. A few years later, I married the owner’s daughter. The rest, as they say, was history.
I retrieved Wand from his box. When I held Wand, my power was amplified and focused a hundred-fold. Forging a wand was something of a rite of passage in mage families. I made him on my sixteenth birthday. It was an arduous and painful process. It meant entering the arcane plane in the flesh. Not every mage in my family emerged with a wand so powerful. I don’t know if there was something special about me, or if it was dumb luck. For some reason, though, the arcane furies blessed me beyond measure. Wand made me more than a mage. When I took Wand in my hand, I was a battlemage. I was a hero. The power I felt with Wand in my hand was addictive. Power like that can change a man.
Caedes was born to a family of mages as I was. He also received a wand when he came of age. The difference was that I was loved and nurtured by my parents. They taught me to respect the power, to master it rather than allow it to master me. Caedes’ family took a different approach. They revered structure and discipline above all else. When we were kids, Caedes was a rambunctious boy. I met him at the yearly conclaves that the mage families used to attend. I’d go so far as to say we were friends. He didn’t go by that name back then. Tim Wagner was a joy, and he was as gifted as I was. When he got his wand, everything changed. He leaned into the power. He let the magic consume him. It changed him.
Some thought he was rebelling against his strict family upbringing. Others thought he was a bad seed from the start. No one knew what turned Tim to the dark side of the force. At the time, it didn’t matter. He was bad. I was good. Good guys beat bad guys. That’s how the world worked in my twenty-one-year-old mind. It was never that easy, though, not even then.
After my victory, when the rest of the world celebrated Caedes’ fall, I mourned the loss of my friend. What happened to him frightened me to the bone.
As I held Wand, it took me back to my so-called glory days. It wasn’t just the memory of being the world’s hero. It was also the power that I used to wield. I was an unstoppable force. I never allowed the power to define me, but I could have. A moment of anger, pain, or heartbreak could have sent me down a dark path. I could have reached deep into the arcane well and grabbed the alluring power that turned Tim into Caedes.
I almost did. In that final battle, when it looked like he was going to win, when he was about to blast me with a deadly spell, I almost gave in. I think that’s what he wanted me to do. If I did, together, we could have ruled the world. I never gave in. I blocked his attack. I bound him in a prison. I chose to become the world’s hero rather than its master.
Now, most people didn’t even remember my name. The world forgot me. Did I regret that? Not at all. I had more than I’d ever wanted in life—I had a family.
I missed being a battlemage, in the same way a high school football hero might miss the field, thinking fondly back on one’s younger days. Back then, I thought I was living my destiny. But life happened, the world moved on, and so did I.
I placed Wand back in his box and placed the box back on my shelf. Would the world need that battlemage again? Probably not. But a small part of me hoped it would.
A tingle remained in my body. Usually, after I set Wand down, I returned to normal. Why was the power lingering? Was Wand trying to tell me something? It wasn’t uncommon for mages to grow in power with age. Maybe that’s what was happening. My capacity for arcane magic expanded even while I wasn’t wielding it. It was like I had just drunk ten Red Bulls. The power would fade, eventually. Somehow, I had to get to sleep.
I snuck back into the house and retrieved a jug of milk from the fridge. Everyone was sleeping. No one would know. I unscrewed the cap, took a swig straight from the jug, and put it back on the shelf.
I shuffled back to my bedroom. Kat still wasn’t in bed. She was likely back in Elliot’s room trying to get him back to sleep, or perhaps she fell asleep beside him. It wouldn’t be the first time that happened.
I rinsed my mouth out with Listerine. Original flavor. Tasted like ass, but it was a refreshing ass. I splashed a little water on my face. I peed and went to bed.
The magic in my body still tingled, like a flow of electricity penetrating every cell in my body. I pulled the sheet and comforter over my body.
“Alexa, play binaural sleep music on repeat.”
Alexa confirmed that she understood my command. The soothing tones filled the room. I closed my eyes. Who was I kidding? It was going to take a while to get to sleep.
Something tells me that a quick power surge here and there is not the only action that Wand is going to see. Stick around becasue on February 28th Go Ask Your Mother Book 1: Sorcerer’s Playground is coming out. Until then head to Amazon and pre-order today.
