New Beginnings and Mysteries in This Snippet for Marmalade and Magic Book 1

MARMALADE AND MAGIC BANNER

Marmalade and Magic Book 1: The Last Witch of Kalhoun Holler

Jemma and Tad moved to the woods to get away from it all and start fresh. Nothing takes your mind off the past like a new mystery

“Why’s it got to be so damn hot here?” Jemma Nox muttered as she peered toward the sun between the pine trees around the house. It glared down, mocking her. She searched the sky, but no signs of rain were visible. She glanced down. The grass all over the property was brown. It had been an unusually dry season.

Summer was at its peak. The August air was as hot and sticky in Kalhoun County, Tennessee as it had been in Jemma’s former home in the suburb of Hendricks, Indiana. The sixteen-year-old swiped dark auburn hair out of her sweaty face and sighed. The cool of autumn couldn’t come soon enough.

Something about her new home seemed to perpetuate the heat. It just wouldn’t end. The summer had been long, hot, and strenuous. In former years, Jemma Nox would have been more than happy to have summer last forever, but this year was different. She had two years of high school left, and she wanted nothing more than to leave this simmering summer behind and get on with her life.

New beginnings were ahead, and she didn’t want to think about her past life anymore. She was tired of everything that had happened before. So damn tired.

“I need a nap,” she grumbled as she trudged up the front porch steps of her new home. Though they had begun the moving process a week ago, they had made little progress on unpacking since their arrival. She walked in and had to maneuver around piles of unopened boxes. She frowned. Her father hadn’t done a very good job of marking the boxes. She had no way in hell of telling which box held which items, and ones marked Fragile were overturned or set precariously on top of other boxes.

Jemma sighed, wishing for the nap she’d been thinking about all morning. She made her way around the box obstacles into the tiny kitchen, which was combined with an even smaller dining room. Her father sat at the round table. For some reason, he had unpacked a red and white checkered tablecloth but little else.

Jemma shook her head but couldn’t help smiling. Her father, hearing her soft footsteps on the wooden floorboards, looked up. She leaned against the doorframe between the kitchen and the living room, arms crossed. She was tall like her father and had similarly shaped features. Her auburn hair and light brown eyes, however, had been inherited from her mother.

Thaddeus Nox went by the nickname “Tad.” It was so normal among his family and friends that even his daughter used it rather than “Dad.” He looked up, his dark eyes meeting Jemma’s. His brown hair had grown almost to his shoulders, and his new beard was streaked with gray. He hadn’t had long hair or a beard the entire time he was married to Jemma’s mother, but he was trying “a new look.”

Jemma tried to suppress her thoughts about this new Tad since one of her greatest weaknesses was her inability to keep her feelings from showing on her face. He looked like a mountain man, which, she decided, made sense, given their new surroundings.

“Hey there, Jem. Look at this.” His voice was cheery as he beckoned her in. Jemma liked being with her father when he was cheerful. It was a good change after the years of depression he had endured as she watched helplessly. He scooted a stool over for her to sit on. Jemma didn’t know where it had come from, but she sat on it and leaned forward. Her father extended a pamphlet.

Jemma sighed. “I’d rather not talk about school for another two weeks.” She leaned back. The pamphlet read Solomon’s Cross High. That was the institution her father wanted her to begin attending in two weeks when the fall semester started. “I wanted to be homeschooled for the rest of high school. You know that.”

The thought of starting over had been a relief to Jemma at first, but the whole “making new friends at a new school thing” wasn’t at the top of her list of desirable new experiences.

“My whole life was in Hendricks,” she complained as if she’d had a former life in the suburb outside of Indianapolis to lament. She’d had few friends, and they had been around more for the sake of convenience than anything else. She doubted any of them would keep in touch with her for longer than a month.

“I know, sweetheart, but you’ll become a hermit like your old man, doin’ that,” Tad told her with a kind smile. He squeezed her shoulder.

Jemma shrugged. “I can make friends. I just don’t want to make them at school.”

Tad chuckled and shook his head. “Try it, Jem. For me? Just try.”

Jemma couldn’t help but grin and give in. Her father used the same words she had used when trying to convince him to move out of Hendricks. “Try it, Dad. For me? Just try.” She had said those words day after day until, at last, he had agreed to move.

“Where to, Jem?” he had asked her.

“Anywhere you want. Anywhere you think will make you better,” she had replied.

Tad Nox had chosen to move them to Kalhoun County, Tennessee, to a small one-bedroom house with a loft nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. It wouldn’t be so bad, Jemma thought. Anywhere was better than the small suburban town where running into her mom was a possibility at any given time. Here, she could go to a grocery store or the movie theater without having to worry about seeing the one person who stirred up a confounding amount of resentment and anger within her.

The image of Delilah Nox’s face flashed across her mind. She pushed the thought of her mother aside for the time being. She had more important things to face. “What’re we having for dinner, Tad?” She stood and began rifling through the boxes piled in the kitchen.

For the past several weeks, the two of them had lived on takeout, delivered pizza, untoasted Pop Tarts, and cereal without milk. Jemma was ready for a home-cooked meal. It didn’t seem like that would be possible tonight. None of the dishes had been unpacked. The boxes containing them weren’t even in the kitchen.

“You’ve got your ‘annoyed with Dad’s packing skills’ face on again,” Tad remarked with a chuckle.

Jemma gestured at a box while trying to smile. “I don’t understand why the oven mitts are in the same box as your tools and your socks and the TV remotes? Where is the TV?”

Tad shifted, his eyes drifting about the kitchen and into the darkened living room. “I’ve been wondering the same thing. I have a game I want to watch.”

Jemma glowered, which made Tad laugh more. She continued to search the boxes. Now that the task was begun, she didn’t see an end in sight. The thought of food was driven clean out of her mind. She wanted to sleep on a bed tonight with sheets and pillowcases, dammit. What she did not find in the next box, however, was sheets or pillowcases.

She frowned. “What’s all this shit?”

“Jem—” her father started.

Before he could rebuke her language, Jemma added, “Really, Dad? Why?” She pulled out a pile of faded papers, pictures, and small miscellaneous items. There was a plethora of things: printed photographs, handwritten letters, ticket stubs, and more. There was even a perfume sample of the scent her mother always wore.

Jemma’s suspicions about the items were confirmed when she found the last of the collection: a ring box. She doubted it was empty. The glittering diamond wedding ring had long since left her mother’s finger and been returned to the box. Her father was still holding onto things from his failed marriage, and that was the last thing he needed to be doing.

Jemma gave him a reproachful look. Tad stood up, looking sheepish. He scratched his head and plunged his hands deep into his pockets. He opened his mouth to give some excuse, but Jemma didn’t let him. “You promised a fresh start. You promised me you wouldn’t bring these things.”

There was a hint of sorrow in her father’s expression. It wasn’t until she saw the conflicting emotions in his eyes that Jemma realized her posture had stiffened and her face revealed her disappointment. She softened her features. Her father didn’t deserve any more admonishment than he had been given in the past two years.

The proximity of her mother in Hendricks, Indiana had done Tad more harm than it had Jemma. Not only had her mother chosen to abandon them for a “better life,” but she hadn’t even had the decency to move away. She had stayed in town, the very town she had grown up in where the people were her people, not Tad’s. Tad gradually became a stranger to the people he had once called close friends.

On several occasions, Jemma had come home from school to find her father sitting in a dim living room, nursing a bottle of liquor or a cigarette. Whenever this happened, Jemma knew he had seen her. He had seen his ex-wife Delilah Nox in a grocery store or at a gas station and been reminded of the joy and pain he had experienced during their twenty-year relationship. Jemma was determined not to allow her father to succumb to any form of addiction. They had to get away.

So here they were in Tennessee, and she still wasn’t sure what had drawn her father to this place. She didn’t know why he had chosen to move here.

“I’m sorry, Jem. I broke my promise to you,” Tad replied. He did look remorseful.

I need to throw the damn things away and be done with it, Jemma thought, but then pity for her father overwhelmed the anger stirring within her—the anger that bade her get rid of any sign of Delilah having ever been a part of their lives. What followed her pity was a pang of guilt at the thought of throwing away her father’s property without his permission, even if the property was doing a damn good job of poisoning him emotionally.

Tad gave her a wan smile. “I’ll look up what’s in town, and we’ll find somewhere to go eat.”

Conversation over, he left the room. Jemma waited until his footsteps faded into his bedroom before she crept up to the loft with the items from his marriage in hand. A mattress sat on the floor amid boxes she hoped held all of her belongings. To her left, at the top of the ladder, was a closet. She opened it and was greeted by a billow of dust. She coughed and waved her hand until it cleared. Jemma peered in. Cobwebs lined the corners. The space didn’t look like it had been used in a very long time.

Jemma bent down and wrangled things around. She moved boxes she had tossed in the day before without opening them. Her goal now was to hide her father’s belongings in the corner and cover them with her clothes. When she pushed farther into the closet, she thumped against its back. She cried out in alarm as the panel came down upon her.

“That fucking hurt!” she hissed, hoping her father hadn’t heard the ruckus from his room below. She paused and listened. No reaction came. She stood up, moving the panel off of her as she straightened. Now she was both sweaty from being outside and dusty from the closet. Further, the loft was suffocatingly hot since they hadn’t been able to get the air conditioning working yet.

All of those things fell away, however, when Jemma realized where the panel had come from. There was a false back to the closet. Whoever had used it last hadn’t put the panel back on properly, and it had shifted at her first contact with it. The real back of the closet was shallow and full of dust and cobwebs, just like the front, but Jemma bent down. There was something in the new space.

Her fingers traced the outline of a small old chest. It just fit in her hands. The outside was covered in dust, and it looked as old as the ancient trees outside. A feeling of intrigue filled Jemma. She had a feeling she wasn’t supposed to have this box in her hands, but she opened it anyway.

Faded black and white photographs covered the bottom of the chest. The subjects of the photos were an extended family gathered together at the edge of a wooded area in clothing that looked at least a century out of style. There was also a tattered leather book.

Jemma blew the dust off it. There was a name imprinted on the bottom corner, but it was so faded that she couldn’t read it. She opened the volume to find loose scraps of paper filled with writing in a thin, cramped script. She frowned. The light was bad, but she knew that even if she sat in front of the window, she wouldn’t be able to make out what was written. Whoever this had belonged to was long gone from this house and probably thought they had lost it.

She examined the words once more, which were written in a spidery scrawl. The hand looked hurried. Jemma couldn’t help but be curious. She was more of a science nerd than a history geek, but the idea that what lay before her was the hidden memoir of someone who lived in this particular corner of the United States compelled Jemma to a greater curiosity than she would have believed.

Jemma heard rustling below, followed by her father’s cheery voice. “Found a place in town, Jem. There are only two.” He chuckled. “I’m ready to go when you are.”

Jemma peered over the edge of the loft. “Soon,” she replied and turned back to the newfound objects in her hands. A panicked rush of conflicting emotions filled her. She had no clue why.

Why don’t I want Dad to see me right now? she wondered. For some reason, all her instincts told her she should keep this to herself. Without thinking about it, Jemma shoved her father’s divorce contraband into the closet with her foot and placed the ancient box on top. She kept the photo album in her hand. She didn’t want to keep the whole thing from Tad. This was the first interesting thing she’d encountered since they’d arrived, and she wanted to share it.

Tad met her at the ladder. He had climbed up while she was hiding things in the closet. “You good up here, Jem?”

She turned to find his eyes smiling and his lips parted. She nodded. “All good.” Instinctively, she closed the closet door and stood in front of it. She didn’t want to tell him about the false back, either. She didn’t want to lie to her father, but she also didn’t want him to see where she had stashed his box of marriage mementos.

Tad seemed to notice none of these things. He did, however, see the photo album in his daughter’s hands. “What’s that?”

She extended it to him. “I found it up here. It isn’t ours.”

Tad opened it and glanced at the photographs. He squinted at them through his round glasses. “Very cool, Jem. Very cool,” he murmured as he traced his fingers over the images. He shrugged. “Maybe we can find out who this belongs to when we go to town.”

Jemma nodded, then tilted her head and observed her father for a long moment. “I think it belonged to whoever lived here last. I wonder why they didn’t take it with them?” She also wondered why it had been left hidden behind a false back in the closet. Whoever had stashed it hadn’t wanted anyone to find it.

Tad scratched his head. “I bought this home a few months ago, as you know, but I never told you how much of a mystery it was.”

He had Jemma’s interest. “What do you mean?”

Tad sighed. “The real estate broker told me this house had been sitting empty for some time but had been kept from falling into disrepair by a handyman who had a long contract with someone to keep the place ‘in good order.’”

Jemma’s brows knitted. “Contracted by who?”

Tad shrugged. “Beyond me. He told us we had the option to keep the handyman if we wanted. I haven’t decided. I haven’t even met the man.”

“Who owned it before us?” Jemma asked.

“A woman named Mabel Doire, I believe, was the name he gave me.” Tad looked down at the photo album. “I wonder if this Ms. Doire is one of the women in the photographs?” He glanced at his daughter. “We’ll bring this along to dinner.” He went back down the ladder. Jemma followed, not wanting the photo album to leave her sight. She couldn’t put her finger on why. Possessiveness toward it overcame her.

“I’m ravenous!” Tad exclaimed, grinning as he exited their house. They got into his truck and made their way into town, the closest thing in the area of Solomon’s Cross to a downtown center.

Jemma glanced in the rearview mirror as they pulled out of the gravel driveway. The woods on the left of the property struck her as familiar. As their home disappeared in the distance, she realized why. The photographs of the people in the album had been taken in front of those trees.

A Road Trip With Demons in This Snippet of Demon Codex Book 1

Demon Codex Book 1: Soul Bottles

Professor Derrick Watson was hoping for an open and shut case when he drove out to the boonies, what he found was the beginning of a wild ride to track down dangerous magic.

Demon Codex 01 snippet-

1 –

The Federal Arcane Bureau knew better than to contact him for anything routine, which made that day’s cryptic message especially compelling. Rather than phone him at the university, they’d magically pinged him with a reverse Aoede spell that was like someone whispering an address, a name, and the word “urgent” in his ear. Professor Derrick Watson had paused only long enough to invite his graduate assistant to join him. Regardless of why the FAB had summoned him, it would surely provide good experience.

The overcast autumn sky made for a perfect afternoon drive beyond the border of Philadelphia. Watson drummed on the leather wheel of his vintage Jeep Wrangler, enjoying the colorful fields of green and brown and gold on display on either side of the road. He’d been to his destination before, but habit had led him to punch the address into the Jeep’s GPS system all the same, despite the irony of using electronics to reach a farm on the edge of Amish country.

A respected professor of Demonic Languages and Linguistics at Alexander University, Watson was in his early forties. His piercing gaze and graying temples suggested a distinguished scholar rather than a man entering middle age. At least, that was what his barber kept telling him, and the professor trusted her. Binh wouldn’t lie to him.

Watson stood just shy of six feet tall. His height distracted the eye from the beginning of a belly—the inevitable result of too much takeout food and too little exercise. He had dressed for the road trip the same way he did for the classroom, in navy slacks and a conservative button-down shirt with no tie. His standard-issue tweed jacket hung from a hook behind him in the Jeep, and his well-worn penny loafers managed the pedals.

His graduate assistant Alberto “Albert” Hernandez Alcaldo occupied the passenger seat in a pair of fashionably ripped jeans and a flannel shirt any hipster would be proud to own. His raven-black hair was pulled up in a man-bun that Watson worked very hard not to ridicule. Maybe it was a generational thing, but Watson believed that if you had to add the word “man” to something, you were signaling that it wasn’t manly. Albert never seemed to notice his mentor’s rolling eyes. At that moment, the grad student’s handsome face turned away as he basked in the calm of the rural surroundings. Like Watson, Albert rarely left the university, let alone went outside the city. It might have been a pleasant holiday if not for the source of Watson’s summoning.

The flashes of police lights in the distance banished the illusion of an enjoyable afternoon. Watson stopped the Jeep at the turnoff to the farm by what looked to be a hastily erected blockade. A uniformed Lancaster police officer approached at a glacial pace, his expression suggesting he had already decided to send the pair of civilians on their way, and he wasn’t going to be rushed. Watson sighed. Assisting law enforcement was one of the more rewarding parts of his work, but it was not one of his favorites. He’d done quite a bit of it years earlier, counting it as fieldwork and building his reputation as a premiere magical polyglot, but that was before he had gotten tenure and the freedom to focus on obscure research topics. He’d pulled back since then, and the FAB only asked for his assistance in their more difficult and interesting cases now. He didn’t begrudge them. It was good to get out of the classroom and office now and again.

Not far away and to either side of the long drive leading to the farm’s main buildings, a group of news trucks sat parked with their antennae raised. A gaggle of camera operators and reporters jostled for the best spot to do their live remotes, setting up their equipment and attempting to radiate an air of importance. Another police officer, this one looking more harassed than bored, stood between the news crews and the property on the far side of the entrance drive.

The farm appeared ordinary. Simple. It consisted of a renovated barn, a small house, and wide-open fields surrounding the two structures that sat about a hundred yards back from the main road at the end of a packed-gravel drive.

To the right, adjacent to the road, a large sign read PUPPIES OF HEALING in dramatic letters, bright white on a background of forest green. Beneath that, in much smaller print, it said Danielle Leroux, M.D., Ph.D., Wrangler. And finally, in script so small as to suggest an almost-resisted afterthought, it read Made Possible by the Derrick Watson Foundation.

Past that sign, any pretense of normalcy ended.

Gyrating in the field directly beyond the sign was a small gathering of Elvis Presley impersonators. As Watson and Albert waited for the police officer, the cavorting Elvi chased each other in circles in their sequined jumpsuits, laughing and grinning like a bunch of kids.

Watson took a deep breath and glanced beyond the Kings. Additional incarnations of Elvis milled and gyrated about the property. A pair of older Elvi lounged on the front steps of the updated farmhouse, their garish outfits bright against the gray-painted timber framing. Then, before his eyes, the house changed.

To be clear, the Elvi on the steps didn’t move. The building shimmered and flowed, and for an instant, the whole thing looked to be made of pale golden light. It pulsed once, and its lines reformed into a new shape. Then the light faded, and in its place stood a small, neon-lit Vegas-style casino. Albert nudged the professor’s shoulder, directing his gaze toward where the barn had been. A scaled-down replica of the Eiffel Tower stood there now. It was disconcerting, to say the least.

The policeman finally arrived at Watson’s door and motioned for him to lower his window.

“I’m sorry, sir, you can’t be here. This is an active crime scene.”

“I’m here at the request of the FAB,” Watson replied. “I imagine someone called ahead about me.”

Officer Molasses frowned. “May I see some identification, sir?”

“Of course,” Watson fished his wallet out of the Jeep’s center console. Digging into it, he presented the license that identified him as a senior consultant to the Federal Arcane Bureau—the obscure agency that Hollywood had popularized as “mage cops.” The officer accepted the card and stepped away to speak into his radio. He came back a moment later and deferentially returned Watson’s identification. “Thank you, Dr. Watson. My apologies. You’re cleared to enter. Please park your car here and walk into the site.”

Watson complied, turning his Jeep around to make it easier to leave in case an emergency departure became advisable. As a consultant to the FAB, he’d learned it was always a good idea to be able to leave in a hurry if the situation required it. You only needed to live through one incident involving a budding elementalist and a fireworks factory to appreciate the lesson.

He stepped out onto the gravel and glanced back into the Jeep. “You should come,” he told Albert. “The FAB gives me a lot of discretion when I help out. Nice as it was, I didn’t invite you along just for the scenic drive.” Albert opened his door and turned to the back of the Jeep, where a small golden hamster stood on top of a toolbox, its hands and face plastered against the rear window of the hard-top shell.

“Stay here,” Albert told the hamster. As an afterthought, he added, “And behave. Don’t let anyone see you, especially any of the reporters.”

Albert rounded the vehicle and joined Watson just as the professor finished shrugging into his tweed jacket. Its rumples and elbow patches completed the look of an ivory tower elite, making Watson appear out of place as they began the short trek to the transformed farmhouse beyond the media vans and a small fleet of police cars. As they passed the sign, Albert furrowed his brow and addressed his professor. “You have a foundation?” he asked as they made their way along the gravel drive.

“I do. Not on purpose. It was several years ago. A politician’s son got himself in a bit of a pickle. Apparently, he’d been trying to impress his date but had made pronunciation errors while attempting some fancy sex magic. No, that’s not the right word. There was nothing fancy about it. It was straight-up freaky.” Watson shook his head as if to clear the memory, or at least the more distracting bits of it. “At any rate, I was called in as a private consultant in the middle of the night. The short version is I saved his butt and his other parts, and the resulting compensation was embarrassingly generous. I set up the foundation to put the money to work doing some good.”

Albert nodded but couldn’t let it go. “Well, okay, that explains the how, but not the why. I mean, puppies?”

“Dani was a doctoral student of mine, not unlike you. She went on to work in palliative care.”

“That’s providing help for people with terminal medical problems, right?” Albert inquired.

“Not solely, no. The term applies to any kind of life-limiting illness. Something she, ironically, has come to understand firsthand.”

“How’s that?”

Watson chewed his lip a moment before answering. “She has an inoperable brain tumor.”

Albert said nothing for several steps but finally broke the silence by asking, “But puppies?”

“It turns out, spending time with puppies is incredibly effective for relieving physical and mental stress. Dani did the research and showed me her findings. I provided the funding, and she built this place. She runs it, hires the staff, brings in puppies from shelters all over the state, and works with the patients.”

Albert glanced around. “Okay, but I’m not getting the whole Elvis Presley thing.”

“Yeah, that’s…new.”

The quote “the cavorting Elvi chased each other in circles in their sequined jumpsuits, laughing and grinning like a bunch of kids” painted a great picture, I can’t wait to read what is causing this hilarious scene. Sometimes modern problems don’t call for modern solutions. Tensions are rising on planet Y-7254, and something has to be done. When it comes to old-school warfare they need someone who has seen it all

One UGLY Marine snippet-

1 –

The image of this newly explored planet was not too dissimilar to Vale, but in a moment of nostalgia, the blue with splashes of green made him recall Earth as it had been so many centuries before. What made the one in view stand out was not only how clear it was—almost completely devoid of any humanoid life and modern civilization—but also the intriguing patches of pink that dotted it.

Most of it seemed to be closer to the north, for which there was no doubt a logical explanation. When he’d looked at the file to find out what it was, however, he’d only been given hypotheses. The last record indicated that it seemed to fall much like snow but on the ground, it shifted and felt like soft sand and didn’t melt like snow did.

According to some of the lab boys and girls, it wasn’t natural to the planet. Most suggested it was created after parts of the world were “glassed” in a war long before. Johnson studied the image and almost smirked at the irony. It probably hadn’t seen a humanoid species in thousands of years but the first time a new group stepped foot on it, trouble followed.

The experience and instincts that had been the reason why he’d been pulled out of cryo and that had since pushed him into his current rank as Sergeant Major of the Military recognized the reality in very simple terms. The trouble the planet faced was war.

He sighed as he took a narrow cylindrical rod from his jacket pocket. The people on Vale had told him proudly—when he’d thawed fully and had been desperate for a smoke—that it was called a wisp, a new-fangled device they created after tobacco and vaping were outlawed. It allowed former smokers or vapers to get the “feel” of their vice and a hint of flavor without the harmful effects.

The hope, of course, was that eventually, it would help them to stop altogether. He had been given his first one six years earlier and was nowhere near quitting.

Then again, most people probably didn’t have as stressful a job as he did.

It was something of a challenge to effectively have oversight of Vale’s military, and the ingrained old-school rank structures persisted on some level, which in turn created a certain degree of conflict within.

Never in his wildest imaginings before going on ice could he have imagined that a sergeant-major would carry that kind of overall responsibility. Of course, he could understand the over-simplified logic behind it. He’d been thawed at that rank and the military at the time had only loosely resembled its Earth counterpart.

Rather than create new ranks, they had simply added, “of the Military.” This only worked because most ranks between his and the General of the Military to whom he reported simply didn’t exist. Anything above the old sergeant-major level was simply captain or commander but the three magic words leap-frogged him to the highest rank since that was what they needed from him. The fact that it bore no relation to the old Earth structure—and turned it on its head—was something only thawed soldiers experienced so wasn’t an issue in their minds.

Another window appeared on the screen he was looking at and he immediately recognized the telltale blonde bun and striped jacket of Secretary Yanda. The general’s aide was her usual cheerful self. “Good Morning, Sergeant.”

“Hey, Yanny.” He puffed the wisp and savored the hint of the Cuban tobacco flavor he so desperately desired, particularly in times like this. “Did you call to have a morning chat over coffee or is the general looking for me?”

She cocked her head and thinned her lips disapprovingly. “I’m here to remind you that the general wishes to speak to you. I marked it on your calendar.”

He nodded and took another puff. “Yeah, I know. I was merely trying to lighten the mood.” She might be a stickler for protocol, but at least she’d condescended to address him as Sergeant rather than insist on the formal version. Maybe he’d convince her to simply downgrade to Sarge one day. That was possibly the one slight advantage of the rank debacle—he could get away with using a form of address he was comfortable with but which would have broken all kinds of rules in the old Earth military.

“I see, Sergeant. My apologies for the misunderstanding. But you shouldn’t make jokes like that over official comms. You know coffee is banned.”

He winced and nodded. That was something he didn’t want to be reminded about right now. “Yeah, you’re right. Go ahead and put her through.” He walked to his chair as her screen disappeared and another took its place. His superior officer appeared as he turned toward the monitors.

“General Yardstrom.” He greeted her with a salute. “Good morning, ma’am.”

She saluted in response. Her white hair was cut short but framed her alluring features perfectly as she stared at him with hypnotic teal eyes. “At ease, Sergeant,” she replied, her voice melodic even when stern. He dropped his salute and sat. “Have you been briefed?”

It was a purely rhetorical question since he’d received the information first and had passed it on to her.

“Of course.” He leaned forward. “I received all the info last night and went through it with Corporal Baxton. He should have delivered my recommendations for the situation.”

“And what are your thoughts?” she asked.

You know damn well what they are but you don’t agree and that’s why I had to wake my groggy ass up after only two and a half hours of sleep to have this little chit chat.”

That was what he wanted to say but his jaw flinched and he sighed when what came out was, “I think we need to deal with the situation head-on. Although my guess is you would rather discuss this further and offer a second opinion?”

She nodded. A small orb appeared in his internal vision and informed him that several linguistic infractions had been blocked and altered, then encouraged him to remain calm and believe he could do it. The orb faded to a dull glow before it disappeared and he rolled his eyes.

When he looked up, Yardstrom stared quizzically at him. He straightened quickly and tapped his temple to let her know that he was dealing with some personal issues.

The general nodded again and assumed a serious expression. “It is my opinion, Sergeant, that this is simply a feint from the Komran forces on the edge of our system. They cannot possibly imagine that we would relinquish the planet to them. I believe they are simply trying to run us off to avoid a battle in which the tech could be irrevocably damaged.”

Johnson grunted in acknowledgment and took another long puff of his wisp. Back in his day, the generals he’d served under had certainly not been so optimistic. The best ones weren’t trigger happy either but he was very sure that all of them would agree that this was not merely a <REDACTED> feint.

The little blob returned and glowered at him. “Very strong language. Please refrain, Sergeant Major!”

He muttered a whitewashed version of a curse and took another long drag. The AI assumed this was acquiescence and vanished, much to his relief.

“Ma’am, they have landed a number of their troops on the planet’s surface and reports from there have told us the research team’s security droids and recon drones have all been disappearing—at least until yesterday when they found broken pieces. If this is intended as a fake assault, no one told the Komran. Either that or they are consummate actors.”

Yardstrom frowned and her poise slipped a little. This exchange was the usual dance between the two. The fact of the matter was that she had been shaped by Vale culture to be more of a politian than a general and honestly didn’t have a clue when it came to the down and dirty of war. He couldn’t knock her for wanting to hope for the best and most of the time, her actions led to more peaceful solutions with little death or damage.

But if everything worked out like that, they wouldn’t have a war on their hands and certainly wouldn’t have taken him out of cryo.

“So that is your opinion, then, Sergeant?” she asked after a long silence. “Do you believe this could turn quite violent? That our team is in danger?”

He nodded. “But maybe not immediate danger.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Why’s that?”

“I’ll clarify my earlier statement. If they merely wanted to kill them, they would have dropped their troops on top of the excavation site,” he reasoned. “I believe they’ve been trying to scare them. I still don’t think this is a feint but it seems that while they want our people gone, they would prefer to not launch an outright attack.”

She grimaced and stroked her chin in thought. “But why risk us sending a relief force? The Komran have been known to invade our space and kill our people in plain sight. We’ve been at war—albeit sporadically—on the fringes of our space for eleven years. So why, suddenly, are they behaving so oddly on a planet that aside from the Nativity tech, has no benefits?”

Johnson stood and approached the monitor, opened some files, and sent them to her. “Well, one of the problems is what we consider our space and what they believe is theirs.” He opened two maps of the galaxy, one with a red circle and a blue circle of relatively even boundaries, while the other showed a much larger red circle.

“The first map reflects actual occupied territory—ours is blue—and it appears to be relatively equally divided between us. To the Komran, however, we are in their space.” He indicated the second map. “The red on this one includes those planets and areas of space that we know the alien empress has claimed as part of their empire. And as for the planet itself, I don’t think I need to remind you why we are there in the first place.”

Yardstrom shook her head and her gaze hardened. “The Nativity technology,” she muttered. “And you’re right. Our research and knowledge make it very clear that the Komran hold this technology sacred and might even have a use for it.”

Yeah, but we don’t know dick about what that might be. The fact was that neither side in this ongoing skirmish had any real clue what the Nativity tech was. They had some idea based on those blueprints that had been easily deciphered and which had formed the basis of their space fleets and other day-to-day equipment.

The nitty-gritty of it—the information that remained locked behind complex levels of protection and encryption despite their best efforts to unravel the code—could simply be a giant cosmic database of galactic dessert recipes. While that was highly unlikely and merely brought a little humor into the situation, neither the Valers nor the Komran knew what they were fighting over. They suspected the potential for far-reaching change and advancement, and both sides pursued it with dogged determination.

Johnson took one last drag before he put the wisp away. “True, we know they’re obsessed with it, but we haven’t had much meaningful contact with the Komran. They aren’t the chatty type and usually shoot before anyone can even ask the question. We only know that they are willing fight to obtain the Nativity tech, which suggests they maybe have a purpose for it we haven’t thought about. It’s something our spies will need to push harder to find out.”

He closed another warning screen from his AI quickly.  Its sudden appearance was infuriating, especially since the strong language he needed to vent had already been whitewashed. “I could be wrong about all this. But besides the tech, if it was a simple land dispute, I can’t see why they would not eradicate our team. My instinct is that the location of our group is too close to where the tech is positioned. Attacking them puts it at risk.”

“If it was about the planet and zoning, surely they would have contacted us,” Yardstrom pointed out with a frown “I know you aren’t very fond of the Komran but we have had civil discourse before.” She certainly sounded more like the hopeful politician than the general and he resigned himself to having to push through her conditioning to make his point. It honestly made everything hard work.

He folded his arms and nodded. “Yes, we have,” he responded ruthlessly. “All of…what? Three occasions? And those—correct me if I’m wrong—were before the war began, which strongly suggests that their overtures were merely an attempt to gauge Vale’s strengths and weaknesses.”

The general paled at his honesty but she didn’t make any effort to contradict him. “Since then, they have also ransacked our ships, our base camps, and settlements on other planets. Not only that, but they have warned us on several occasions I’m aware of that they have no problem engaging us in battle should we not accede to their demands.”

With a sigh, he looked her in her eyes. “I’m not saying peace is impossible. but it is certainly a one-sided desire right now. That makes us vulnerable to a more ruthless enemy. My opinion is that if we don’t act immediately, we’ll reclaim bodies and not people soon enough.”

So please, for the love of whatever you care about, let me do what you thawed me for.

Johnson could see the conflict in her face and knew she was trying to think of some other way to resolve the situation. He felt a mixture of sympathy and frustration. All-out war was no longer something this society was accustomed to and they valued peace highly, which was an admirable outlook. But if there was one thing he needed them all to understand, it was that to keep the peace, you sometimes had to be willing to fight for it.

They seemed to understand that on some level, which gave him hope. Vale had a standing army, had weapons capable of real damage, and had built droids to fight in harsh environments so they didn’t have to sacrifice soldiers if the need arose.

Most importantly, they had thawed him out—a sergeant-major from centuries before. That alone indicated their acceptance of the need for a different perspective.

Eventually, the general closed her eyes and nodded solemnly. “Very well. I have seen your reports. You suggested sending a strike team in to oversee and accomplish the extraction of the researchers.”

Johnson nodded. “If it helps, I’m not itching to make this a bigger situation than it needs to be. All I want is to put some good men and women down there who can get the team out as quickly as possible. They merely need to be skilled enough to deal with any threats they might encounter.”

“Do they need to be soldiers?” she asked. “Perhaps some droids could suffice. I’ve heard they’ve upgraded the OS so the latest models can take on much more complex tasks. Perhaps this could be a field test.”

He shook his head as he returned to his chair. “I’m not sure you want to rely on a test in a sensitive and volatile situation like this. Besides, we’re low on the bots right now after that situation on the minor moon.”

She pursed her lips, regret on her face. “Right. I must have put that out of mind.” She typed on her computer. “Then what do we have left? The EVO regiment is busy guarding council members on their diplomacy trip and our J1 division is dealing with the settlement on Tyr, correct?”

The thought of them made him smile. He had been promoted to head a regiment after only six months out of the freezer. At first, he had been worried that everyone in this new society was too soft to whip into meaningful shape but he had been pleasantly surprised by a good number of them once they got the fire in them.

His smile faltered, however, when he realized she was unfortunately right. He would need only a handful by his estimation, but all of them were helping establish a settlement on Tyr, a planet with valuable resources but ferocious wildlife and deadly fauna. “That is correct, General. I understand they are doing a damn good job but they are still six weeks out, at least, from returning.”

Yardstrom folded her hands tightly. “And all the other teams we might look to are similarly engaged elsewhere, which means we’ve exhausted the obvious choices. We can’t send a platoon or even a large ship since that might escalate the situation. As you’ve suggested, a small team would be best. Can you offer any possible solutions?”

He could but he also knew she wouldn’t like it. “I do have something. It occurred to me before I took a little power nap.”

“And that is?”

Jackson stood and hurried to the computer. “When was the last time you checked the freezer?”

“Cryo?” She frowned and accessed her logs. “I wasn’t there personally but we’ve only thawed three others since yourself.”

“Yeah, two scientists and the researcher—and the first mission for one of the former was this one, coincidentally. Talk about a bad first day.” He scrolled through the list. “Most of the people left in cryo are soldiers. Given what we’re dealing with, I think it’s time we microwave a few of them.”

“That could certainly work,” she muttered, “assuming you have the right people in mind. We need a small, experienced, and efficient team. The soldiers we bring out should be strong, dedicated, and stable.”

“I can promise you the first two in spades,” Johnson replied and glanced at the general, who now looked concerned.

“What are you suggesting?”

He sent her a link. “Ma’am, this situation could get real ugly real fast. Even if we defrost someone immediately, after tests and getting them up to speed, we still have to get them onto a ship and warp them to the planet. One advantage is that the cryo facility is part of HQ station so we’re all on-site and won’t waste additional time, but we still require a minimum of a couple of days. By that time, things on…” He glanced at the planet description and shook his head in annoyance at the unfriendly numeric titles when real names would have been far easier. “Things on Y-7254 will probably only get worse. We will need someone who is used to that.”

Yardstrom considered this as she looked at his suggestion—only one name, since he hadn’t bothered with the numerous others he knew weren’t his preferred choice. For this, he’d dug very deep to find the only soldier left from the first cryo batches, a Marine he believed was the only one who could do the job.

The sergeant-major watched her expression shift between emotions from surprise to curiosity to interest and back to surprise. “Sergeant, are you sure you sent me the right link?”

He checked to placate her but nodded. “I did indeed, ma’am. This is John Joseph Jenkins, one of the top soldiers of his day who always seemed at home, even in the worst situations.” He stood at attention and met her gaze unflinchingly. “He was a few years before my time, but he was already a legend back then. Everyone knew Joe Ugly.”
