We are continuing the experiment this week where we post the full blurbs of the books on the website with teaser introductions in our email (which is why you are here now – I hope), but this week, we’re also including a text link to all the books (at least in the email).
This week we’re sharing two snippets with you. One is for the new series released last Friday which will be on sale this weekend and the other is for the new series launching this week. We hope you enjoy them.

Tomb of Malevolent Evil Book 1: Roll For Initiative
Jorge wants to get the gang back together for a game night but tensions run high between old friends, and it seems Jorge has something extra special planned.
Tomb of Malevolent Evil 01: Snippet
1 – Terry pulled to a stop in Jorge’s driveway and put his vehicle in park. The engine rumbled angrily as he shut it off and it coughed a cloud of black smoke from the tailpipe. His car had not liked the drive. Even though the stretch of highway had been short, the beater had not reacted well to moving at speeds in excess of fifty-five miles per hour.
He sat in silence for a few moments and prepared himself for the ordeal ahead. At least he’d arrived before everyone else. Today would be as awkward as hell, but things would have been so much worse if he’d been late. Being the first one there meant he could take a little time to shake his growing anxiety out.
In theory, anyway.
It unfortunately didn’t seem to work very well in practice and he decided the effort only added to the problem. He opened his door with a loud grind of too much use and not enough maintenance and stepped into Jorge’s flowerbed. With a mumbled curse, he regained his balance and moved around the plants. He wasn’t used to being early and able to park directly in front of his friend’s house.
His sigh reflected his dogged uncertainty. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to be there. This would be the first time the gamers would hang out since Terry and Jewel broke up—since he’d ended their relationship. Before that, their little group had gathered weekly for years and he had screwed all that up.
It wasn’t that he’d wanted to end things with Jewel. The problem was that she had begun to nag him for a commitment and he wasn’t ready for that. When he looked back at their last few months together, he realized now that the signs had been obvious.
She had constantly pointed out houses for sale, wedding rings, and even floated baby names once. That had scared the hell out of him. He was all of twenty-five years old and nowhere near ready for marriage, children, and all that.
That had been the death knell for the gaming group. Jewel wanted nothing to do with Terry. Her best friend Mandy was also in the we-hate-Terrance camp. Morgan and Jorge both still spoke to him but with half the group gone, it looked like they might not be able to keep playing at all.
Given all this, it had come as a surprise when Jorge texted the group about hanging out to play a new D&D module—some “tome” he had found—and Jewel had been the first to respond. It had been a simple, sounds good, with a smiling emoji, likely an auto-filled option on her phone, but it had been enough to get Terry to game night—and early to boot.
Honestly, he didn’t know what to expect. He was super nervous about playing and not at all sure it would work. They had played tabletop roleplaying games together before they had started dating, but once they became a couple, their characters always reflected that. No matter who they chose to be, they had always made their characters fall in love—or lust at least—much to the chagrin of the DM.
That no longer seemed like a funny idea for a side story, though.
Terry walked up to Jorge’s front door, drew a deep breath, and knocked resolutely on the wood.
It opened the second his knuckles rapped on it.
“Announcing the arrival of Sir Terrence!” Jorge grinned as he beckoned him inside. He was a little shorter than him, with skin like sand and dark hair.
“Hey, Jorge. Long time no see.”
“It’s only been seven weeks, but who’s counting?” His friend chuckled awkwardly. It never ceased to amaze Terry that he could simultaneously be the best game master he had ever played with and one of the most awkward people alive when it came to regular conversation.
“So tell me about this ‘tome’ you discovered,” he said to break the ice.
“Sure, yeah. Right this way.” Jorge relaxed almost instantly. Merely talking about gaming made him chill out. It was a huge relief that he didn’t want to talk about what had happened between Terry and Jewel.
He followed the other man out of his entrance hall and into the “gaming room.” Everyone knew full well that this was his living room with the dining room table moved into it, but the walls all featured posters of stone towers, powerful sorceresses, or muscled barbarians, so it worked well to create the right setting for their games.
“This is it right here.” Jorge picked up a surprisingly thick and shockingly old-looking book. “I give you the Tomb of Malevolent Evil! TOME—get it?”
Terry smirked. “I don’t want to know what Mandy will say when she finds out we came here under the pretense of a pun.”
“You don’t think it’s funny?”
“It’s cool, Jorge, no worries. Can I take a look at it?”
His friend hesitated. “Sure…uh, but don’t read any of it. I don’t want you to—”
“Confuse player knowledge with character knowledge, yeah, yeah. I only want to see when it was published. It looks like it predates D&D completely.”
“Nah, it’s newer than that—see?” Jorge opened the book carefully to the first page and pointed out the year in which it was published. “It uses the latest system and everything. You guys will love it. I haven’t had a ton of time to dig into it, but the writers have covered everything. It’s a fully fleshed-out world!”
Terry nodded and tried not to feel intimidated by the people who had written the book. He had written parts of some stories and helped his friend with some of his worldbuilding but he’d never finished anything. Usually, he would get started on a great idea and when he reached a part of it that didn’t seem quite as easy as it had been, he would quit.
“It looks cool,” he managed to say and yanked himself from that train of thought.
“Don’t let its aged appearance deceive you. I think it will be awesome. It’s extremely well made with stitched binding and everything, and the character sheets it came with are beautiful. They’re on papyrus or something, I swear. Oh, plus, wait until you see the dice! They’re super awesome too. The only reason it looks so worn is because the previous owner must have loved it so much. I’m telling you, it’s exactly what this group needs to bring us all back together.”
He nodded and sat at the table. “I hope you’re right.”
***
Mandy stepped out of her car and scowled. Terry had taken her usual spot and crushed some of Jorge’s flowers in the process.
“I swear, that asshole has no respect for anyone.” She hissed in irritation as she clicked up to Jorge’s front door in heels. Although she knew she needed to relax, she couldn’t. Terry was almost always late but today of all days, he was there early?
She’d wanted to be early so she could be there for Jewel. That was the main reason she’d come at all. Frankly, she felt like this whole attempt to bring them all together was more likely to be a train wreck than anything else.
Jewel deserved far better than Terry. Mandy used to think he was nice but how could he take someone like her friend for granted? It’s not like she’d proposed to him. She had only said—ugh! It was obnoxious how he’d responded.
Still, she had to be there so she drew a deep breath, knocked on the door, and hoped Jorge didn’t say anything to defend Terry. She liked him but he could sometimes be overly empathetic. While she didn’t want to subject him to the sharp edge of her tongue, if he came out acting like there were “two sides to every problem,” she would knock his block off. Hopefully, since their friendship had survived more than that, it could survive this too.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t Jorge who answered the door. It was Terry.
“Hi,” she said, her voice a dead monotone.
“Mandy!” Terry almost yelped. “It’s…uh, nice to see you!”
“Is it?” She knew she shouldn’t have said it but she was annoyed that he was there at all.
“Yeah. It’s been a while. I…uh, Morgan said he asked you to join us for drinks a few times. It would have been nice to see you.”
“I’ve been busy hanging out with other friends who don’t need as much space.”
He winced.
Twerp. Mandy brushed past him and drew a deep breath. She wanted to be there to support her friend, she reminded herself. Preemptively snapping at Terry wouldn’t do that. Let Jewel bring it up and then she could come to her defense.
“From the land of fire and steel, of acid and the crystals of the sea, Her Majesty Amanda has arrived!” Jorge proclaimed proudly when she entered the gaming room.
“Don’t worry, Jorge, I brought snacks.”
“And that’s why I love you.” He grinned unashamedly.
She put her bag of snacks down—all cooked that morning at the restaurant where she worked—and embraced her old friend.
“I love you too, bro.”
Mandy and Jorge had known each other longer than anyone in their gaming group. He had practically learned how to be a game master by practicing on his “sister.” Unlike the other four, he had not attended college. There had been a time when both of them had feared that this difference in life choices might have driven them apart, but they needn’t have worried.
After completing a degree in biology with honors, Mandy decided she wanted to be a chef, of all things. That put her firmly in the world of blue-collar jobs, exactly like her old buddy, who had found himself a niche doing detailed paintwork on high-end houses. They were closer than they had ever been and ought to stay that way—as long as she didn’t ruin the evening he had no doubt spent hours preparing for.
“What have we got tonight, chef?” Jorge asked.
“You think you’ve had French fries,” she said and withdrew her first parcel of food.
“This is true. I’m very sure I have.”
“That’s where you’re wrong because you’ve never had anything like these. Waffle cut, fried twice, then garnished with truffle oil, parmesan, chives, and more parmesan. They are paired with garlic dill aioli that I think is good, but the head chef says I still need to ‘dial in,’ if you can believe that.”
“Delicious.” Jorge grinned around a mouthful, although he was always an easy win. Mandy had cooked snacks for him for as long as he’d hosted games. “Honestly, I think the garlic dill aioli is perfect and if he thinks you need to change it at all, he should be roasted alive in one of his ovens. Also, I have to admit that your description lost me at ‘waffle fry.’”
“Well, I’m glad you like them. Now I need to confess—the head chef agreed to put the fries on the menu permanently.” She smirked at his widening grin.
“Mandy, that’s huge! Why are you complaining about the dip?” This was a long-running tease between them. He had always known she was a perfectionist.
She shrugged. “I merely like to know what my taste tester thinks.”
“This is on you,” he protested. “You know I don’t have any taste.”
They both laughed at the old shared joke, and Mandy felt some of her tension leave her. To think she had considered not coming tonight when she knew how much she enjoyed hanging out with him.
“So…what would these fries pair well with?” Jorge asked, not at all discreetly.
“Uh-uh. No way. You know the deal.” She shook her head firmly.
“Not this time. This module is amazingly paced. You get nothing until we start.”
“Even a little worldbuilding? Are we talking medieval? High Magic? Low Magic?”
“Nothing. Even if it means I have to wait to taste whatever else you brought.”
“How am I supposed to make a character if you don’t tell me anything about the world?” she responded in a wheedling tone. “You can at least tell me if we’re dealing with magical races or if it’s only humans. Please tell me it’s all humans. I love it when Morgan complains about how boring it is to swing a sword all night long.”
“Fine. There’s magic. I guess that doesn’t spoil anything since one of the characters is a sorceress.”
“Wait—one of the characters? They’re pre-made? You know I like to make my own!”
Jorge shook his head. “The module calls for specific pre-made characters. They all have backstories and everything.”
“Oh, come on.”
“Come on what?” He raised an eyebrow at her.
“Can you at least tell me the character classes, then?”
He frowned but could never say no to Mandy for long. “Fine. Sorceress. Cleric. Barbarian. Bard. Now, what’s in the bag?”
“But you haven’t told me anything yet!”
“Wait—you’re telling Mandy stuff? You didn’t even let me look at the pictures,” Terry said as he sat at the table after pilfering a beer from the fridge.
“All I told Mandy is that there are pre-made characters. I’ll pass them out once everyone gets here. Now, Lady Amanda, you were telling us about what you captured today in the battlefield?”
She smiled and took another container of food out. “You think you’ve had carrot soup…”
Something seems off about this old book Jorge is planning on using. Things could get interesting on more than one front. Find out when Tomb of Malevolent Evil Book 1: Roll for Initiative is released on March 4, 2022. Until then head over to Amazon and pre-order today.

The power to make people fall out of love? Not a good thing when you are in the love business. The Fairy Godmother Agency is going to have to think of something fast.
Agent Beaufont 01 snippet –
1 – Recording Studio, Rooster Records, Hollywood, California
The padded walls inside the large recording studio absorbed the guttural screams full of a unique pain. The band members of Punch Line, the hottest rock band in the world, were used to loud noises. However, all of them still winced from the screams as they watched the needle penetrate the lead singer’s arm as if it were them getting the tattoo and not Archer Finch.
“This isn’t right,” the keyboardist implored, running his hands through his dark brown hair. His gaze reflected tension as he watched the scene before them.
“It’s necessary,” Archer stated through clenched teeth, tears spilling over his cheeks from his bloodshot red eyes.
“Is it, though?” The drummer looked between the tattoo artist and the lead singer.
The tattooist simply shrugged and glanced at the man standing on his right. His attire was much more formal than the rest, a starched black suit and a bowler hat that shielded his eyes. He’d introduced himself simply as Mr. J, and that’s how he’d signed the contract he held in his hand, as well.
Mr. J nodded sternly. “The ink is full of powerful magic. Unfortunately, that’s going to make the process of tattooing much more painful than usual.”
The tattooist nodded as if this was a sufficient answer and continued his work. Archer screamed as soon as the needle touched his skin, but he remained still, and the words etched on his skin began to glow—imbued with magic unlike any other.
“Maybe we don’t have to do this,” the bassist offered, but there was no conviction in his voice as he slumped on a stool in the corner.
“I do.” Archer kept his eyes pressed shut tightly, and his head back like the pain would soon make him pass out. His long black hair had come loose from its usual ponytail and matted to his sweaty face. The many other tattoos on his arm appeared ordinary alongside the new one full of lyrics from the band’s soon-to-be latest song.
“I don’t have to do this,” the keyboardist argued, shaking his head in disgust. “Look what this is doing to you. It’s breaking you.”
Archer’s eyes flashed open, sudden soberness in them as he stared at the other man. “No, don’t you get it? I was already broken. She did that to me when she dumped me. Since I’ll never feel love again, no one else will either. I want everyone who listens to our music to know the same heartbreak as me.”
“That’s wrong.” The drummer’s voice suddenly grew uncharacteristically loud.
“It’s the way of the world,” the guitarist stated matter-of-factly, leaning against the wall in the corner.
“Heartbreak sells.” Mr. J lifted his chin and flashed a convincing look at the drummer.
“So did our other songs that were about love.” The keyboardist braced his shoulders like he was about to fight over the matter, although he wasn’t the type.
“I can’t write love songs anymore.” Archer closed his eyes. He seemed calmer now, like he’d gotten used to the pain—assimilated it with the other wounds he harbored.
“This new song is a killer.” The tattooist leaned forward to study his work, a series of lines surrounded by musical notes. “It’s going to be your biggest hit yet.”
“This magic will make it break people’s hearts who are in love,” the drummer argued.
“That will make them come back for more and more music.” Mr. J’s voice was quiet but commanding. “Those who are broken always want a song that drives the dagger deeper into their wounds.”
The keyboardist shook his head. “That’s sick, man.”
“It’s the way of the world,” Mr. J said coldly.
“We don’t need the money that badly,” the drummer insisted, starting to pace, his head down like he was brainstorming. “I can write a song. We all can.”
“You all are shit at writing songs. I’m the writer in the group, and you all know it.” Archer’s eyes were still closed.
“I do need the money,” the bassist insisted. “I burned through the money from the last tour.”
“Me too.” The guitarist nodded.
“Then you sing this song, and it will make millions.” None saw the wicked smile Mr. J hid with his chin tucked and his bowler hat low. “Then you write other songs, we’ll do the same thing, and you continue to break hearts and rise higher than ever. You’ll be the greatest rock band in history.”
The drummer halted his pacing and threw up his arms. “But we’ll have hurt so many to do it. Everyone who hears this song with lyrics we’ve charmed will have their hearts broken.”
“Do you think The Rolling Stones, The Doors, or Pink Floyd became legends singing love ballads?” Mr. J spoke like he was asking about that day’s weather.
“What about the Beatles?” the keyboardist countered. “They wrote about love.”
“They also wrote about death, loneliness, conflict, and heartache,” the bassist declared.
The drummer spun to face his band member, his face red with surprise. “Whose side are you on?”
He shrugged. “I’m on the side that gets us money. Lots of it. Quick and easy.”
“I second that.” The guitarist nodded.
Mr. J folded the contract that Archer had signed on behalf of the band. “I assure you that this song and the ones that follow will make you richer than ever before.”
The drummer turned to face the lead singer. “How are we supposed to believe this guy? He shows up and gives you some magic ink that’s supposed to make our song resonate stronger with fans, and we just take his word for it?”
“The magic ink will work, I assure you. It will make the song a hit, much bigger than it could have been on its own. I’ll also handle all the distribution of the new record,” Mr. J interrupted. “Sing the songs, and I’ll take care of the rest. It makes it all quite simple for you.”
“It sounds fishy to me.” The keyboardist shook his head, his eyes hooded.
“You said you wanted to play music and drop all the bureaucracy that went with our last label,” the bassist stated. “This is our chance. If this is a home run and all we have to do is sing this song, why not do it, take the money and run?”
Mr. J nodded approvingly. “When you have another song, I’ll supply the ink. Then we do it all again.”
“You said that once we broke hearts, the fans would line up for the next songs,” the drummer argued. “Why would we need to keep putting Archer through this?”
The man in the suit tilted his head back and forth. “You don’t, but you’ll make more this way.”
“I’m fine with it,” Archer grunted.
“Then I am too,” the bassist said. The guitarist nodded in agreement beside him.
“You need to get over her,” the keyboardist argued, giving the lead singer a meaningful look.
Archer flashed him a murderous glare, his eyes sharp. “There is no getting over Ella. That’s impossible. Don’t you see, that’s why I’m doing this.”
“Arch.” The keyboardist softened a little. “It takes time.”
Archer shook his head. “You don’t get over the love of your life. You simply write songs that hopefully break the rest of the world so they don’t get to have the love you lost.”
“This is the song that will do it.” The tattooist slid back and appraised his work, a scroll of words that ran down Archer’s bicep. “I’m all done.”
Without hesitation, Archer Finch rose to his feet and looked each one of his band members in the eyes. “Then we play the song. We find out if this works. If it does, we record it and release it worldwide.”
The bassist and guitarist didn’t need more encouragement to pick up their nearby instruments. However, the drummer and keyboardist stood frozen.
It was the tattooist who asked the question they must have been thinking. “If you all play this song with magical lyrics and we hear it, won’t we all feel sad?”
Mr. J lifted his chin so everyone could better see his face and flashed a rare smile for them all to witness. “I think we can all agree that the seven of us in this room are already broken. It’s the lovers of the world who are at risk. It’s their hearts that will shatter when they hear this song. They’ll line up to pay top dollar for concert tickets and merchandise and buy every record you ever release.”
“Amen to that.” The bassist strummed his strings, his expression hungry.
Archer took his place in front of the microphone, grabbing it with the arm that wasn’t red from magical ink. He glanced back at his band members, the keyboardist and drummer finally having caved and taken their spots. “Are you all ready to break some hearts?”
They all nodded, some more enthused than others. When the band started playing, the music that followed created red notes in the air that looked like dust particles in the wind as they swirled and crashed into the studio’s padded walls. Mr. J smiled with a knowing look.
“Is that what’s supposed to happen?” The tattooist watched as musical notes soared off the instruments and flew around the recording studio like ghosts haunting the space.
“Yes,” Mr. J answered before Archer opened his mouth and sang words that sounded much more painful than his earlier screams. The lyrics of his heartbreak song were beautiful. They were poetry. When broadcast worldwide, they’d tear lovers apart.
Mr. J sounds like bad news. It’s nothing that Agent Paris Beaufont and the Fairy Godmother Agency cant handle. Stay tuned because The Unconventional Agent Beaufont Book 1: The Extraordinary Fixer comes out tomorrow February 25th. Find out how she plans to “fix” this new problem. Available for pre-order today.

Undercurrents:
In Undercurrents: An Anthology of What Lies Beneath, twenty-three talented authors, including New York Times bestsellers Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, and Jody Lynn Nye, have stood on the shores of their psyches and looked out over the ocean of possibility and wondered “What lies beneath?” The sea creatures and sea monsters that answered their calls range from a giant kraken that rules the deepest ocean to the smallest puffer fish that creates intricate works of underwater art. Creatures of classic mythology—mermaids, sirens, and sea serpents—swim alongside more unusual beasts—underwater cats and singing whirlpools. These stories dive deep into the fears many of us face, including loss, abandonment, death, and physical, mental, or emotional danger. When the fears we keep buried beneath the surface rise up and threaten to consume, we must make a choice: conquer or be conquered.

The Trail to Redemption:
Every time he squeezed the trigger, somebody died. He thought it was just the way of the war, but after taking a couple bullets and being mustered out, it continued. When he stood over the ashes of his family’s farm and stared at their graves, the same bile rose in his throat, and he knew somebody was going to have to pay… and pay with their blood. This was to be the beginning of a blood hunt that would take Reuben Grundy across four states, pit him against renegade outlaws posing as the Home Guard for the north, the Bushwhackers of Captain Quantrill and the men in butternut and grey, as well as the mighty Pawnee of the plains. His father had taught young Reuben to never look for others to do what needs to be done, even if it means putting his life on the line. And Reuben would do just that, with his training as one of Berdan’s Sharpshooters at the outset of the war between the states, and his own time beside his father in the woods, Reuben was destined to become one of the most feared hunters of the plains.

Three new series and other new releases this week – don’t miss out!
A new Monday, a new experiment.
While a few other things are happening which we want to test in the future, we wanted to try something different on the next few Mondays for the newsletter and our website.
What remains the same in the emails: Direct links to all of the books releasing every week as well as audiobooks and books available for preorder will continue to be in the bottom half of the email.
What’s changing and resulting in more content here on the website: Instead of the incredibly long section about the books releasing this week in the newsletter, we’re going to share two articles on our website. One will always be for the releases this week, the other ones will be something we think you’ll enjoy reading – news on new series coming the following month, author interviews, staff interviews and some other article types. And there may be a promo for a new series that has book one in preorder, but isn’t slated to release for a month or so.
So, this week we have the article about the 8 new releases, three of which are in new series and the info is below, and then an article about series coming out in March, which will be linked from this article.
We’d love to hear what you think about the change. So be sure to drop a line to Ranger Tabitha and let her know!

Whirlwind Snippet for Realms of Power and Fury Book 1
Realms of Power and Fury Book 1: Discovering Power
They say you should always read the fine print. This was especially true for Eric but his need for cash in hand outweighed his common sense.
Realm of Power and Fury 01 snippet –
1 –
The coffee was terrible but when Eric Johnson was offered a second cup, he accepted eagerly. It was the first hot anything he’d had to eat or drink since his power had been shut off a week earlier.
“You want this one sweet and white too or did that last cup put some hairs on your chest?” the man seated across the desk from him asked with a sharp bark of laughter.
“Sugar and cream would be great, Mr. Marston. Thank you,” he replied and pushed the tiny Styrofoam cup eagerly across the table. The older man made no attempt to hide his disdain at touching the used cup.
“I’ll get you a fresh one, son. The world’s a different place than it was a few years ago.” Mr. Marston stood and walked toward a coffee maker that looked as if it had not been cleaned in months.
Although maybe “walked” wasn’t quite the right word. He didn’t so much walk as he marched casually. Everything about the man screamed ex-military, from his tightly cropped hair to his starched suit, sterile mustache, and the way he didn’t so much ask questions as demand answers.
A month before, Eric might have joked with Sarah that he looked like a cliché from a video game, but thinking about either her or video games hurt too much right now.
Mr. Marston put the cup on the desk and nodded at him.
Eric looked up to thank him but caught the look of condescension on his face and the words died on his tongue. Not that he blamed the man. They were practically opposites and he couldn’t come out of any comparison without falling horribly short.
Marston’s shoulders were broad but his were knobby. The man’s starched suit was almost too tight across his broad chest and biceps, while his faded T-shirt was baggy, except around his gut. His host spoke with purpose but Eric felt like he had none.
Even the way they sat was different. Martson looked like he had a steel rod down the center of his spine, while he alternated between hunching his shoulders forward or slouching back in the uncomfortable folding metal chair.
“So you saw our advertisement and wanted to help America in the pursuit of maintaining our technological advantage? Admirable, Aaron. That’s admirable.”
“It’s Eric. Did I not fill out the paperwork correctly? My handwriting isn’t the best. Sorry.”
“Not a problem, son. Handwriting isn’t needed for what we’re doing today.”
“What are we doing?” he asked. “I’ll get paid today, right? The sign on the bus said cash.”
“That’s right, son—five hundred dollars cash in hand before you step through that door.” Marston nodded to the dirty glass door at the front of the strip mall. Eric had felt something like hope when he’d first walked through it but the dingy interior of this office space had begun to leech that from him.
Not knowing the details of the “clinical study” that had been advertised on the bus did not help his confidence in the situation.
“And what do I have to do?”
“Before I can tell you that, I need to confirm your eligibility for this offer. Not every Tom, Dick, or Susan who walks through that door has the qualities Quantum Fortune Research needs. Once we determine that you are the best of the best, we’ll sign some paperwork. All standard boilerplate stuff, of course—NDA, consent forms, release forms, next of kin. That kind of thing.”
“Next of kin?”
The older man waved the question away with a flick of his wrist that looked like it could have broken Eric’s collarbone if it had been too close. He pulled a tablet from inside his desk. It seemed almost flimsy in his hands as if he could snap it in half if he so wished.
“Number one!” Marston snapped eagerly like a grade-school teacher reading out questions for a pop spelling quiz. “What is your current employment status?”
“Un.” Eric sighed.
“You’re gonna have to speak up, son. And where I’m from, we say ‘sir’ when we’re finished speaking.”
As if that wasn’t obvious. He didn’t say that, of course. Not with five hundred bucks on the line. “I was on an esports team, but I wasn’t…uh, as competitive as Hans.”
“Esports, huh? That’s like online gambling?”
“More like competitive video games.”
The man shook his head and his lip wrinkled in disgust like Eric’s dad’s used to when he got tired before he’d finished mowing the lawn. “Is there much money in that?”
“I was getting by okay but right now, I’m unemployed, sir.” His skin crawled at calling the man sir but his stomach took precedence over his pride.
“Very good,” the interviewer replied as if being unemployed was the best of all possible answers. “How many hours a week would you say you pass time with your friends?”
“I’m sorry, how is that relevant?”
Martson checked his watch. “We need to keep moving if we’re gonna get that cash in your hand today, son.”
“But—”
“I don’t understand the details, son. I only ask the questions. I think it’s something to do with network effects and synapses—I don’t know, I’m not an egghead. Answer the question.”
“I haven’t seen any friends in a month, sir. Not since I left the team.”
“You got a girlfriend?”
“No. But Hans does.”
The man nodded and made a note on his tablet. Eric wondered if he was checking the box for “loser.”
“What about family?”
“I haven’t seen my family in years.” It was still a sore point so he didn’t add anything more.
Martson made a few more notes on his tablet while Eric waited for more questions but none came.
“All right, son. It looks like you’re eligible. Now the fun part—paperwork.” It was ostensibly a joke, he knew that, but the man had delivered it with such hamhanded gracelessness that all he could do was stare at the mound of paper that was shoved in front of him.
“I thought there would be medical questions.”
His query was waved away with another flick of his wrist. “The eggheads want participants in a variety of levels of physical fitness—all the way down. They’ll give you a once-over once we take you back there.”
“Sure,” he said, not wanting to dwell on how obvious it was that he was on the bottom end of the fitness scale.
“First up is a standard Non-Disclosure Agreement. You can’t tell anyone about what you do here today, nor can you post about it online, write about it, take photos, or anything else. If you do, you’ll face fees, jail time, and whatever our lawyers can get to stick.”
Martson seemed determined to talk so fast that Eric couldn’t read and listen at the same time.
Still, he’d signed NDAs before. They were all fairly standard—don’t talk about this or you will get in trouble. He signed it. No sooner had he finished the ‘n’ in his last name than the other man snatched the paper away. Eric hadn’t seen him move around the table but he now towered over him and pointed out where he would need to sign, date, and initial.
“Next up is a consent form. It simply declares that you’re in full control of your faculties and you willingly go through this process.”
“And what is the process?”
“You have to sign one of these to go to Six Flags, son. And you got to sign one today if you want to get paid. It’s only saying you agree to do this.”
He could smell the bad coffee on Marston’s breath. It encouraged him to sign and date the form.
“Great. The next one is a standard liability release. You can initial on each line where I highlighted.”
“Risk of injury?”
“This is medical research, son. You’d be surprised at how the general populace reacts to something as benign as the prick of a needle. Goddamn legion of lawyers. Of course, they wouldn’t have those kinds of complaints if they saw what yellow fever looked like in the unvaccinated. Did you ever see a man vomit himself to death? I have. It’s not pretty.”
Eric initialed, mainly to get him to stop before he began to elaborate on the details of what vomiting oneself to death looked like.
“Loss of wages due to missing work. I guess that’s not an issue,” he mumbled as he initialed that line.
“You don’t need to read every damn line, son, only initial.”
He completed the next couple without comment. It wasn’t like he could afford a lawyer to sue, nor was he concerned about “loss of privacy for the duration of the experiment.” He would be out of there soon, anyway. The next line gave him pause, however.
“Release indemnity from quantum disentanglement?” he read aloud. “Is that supposed to be a joke?”
“If it is, I’m not laughing. The company’s name is Quantum Fortune. We’re merely trying to cover our bases. You’d be shocked at what these liberal whackjobs will sue a small business over.”
“Can I skip this one?”
“Not if you want to participate, son. But that’s fine. You came here on the bus, right? I think one passed a couple of minutes ago but you’re welcome to leave now. The bus stop has a covering so you should stay mostly dry from the rain. But don’t come back for a few weeks, all right? We’re booked up with people who want this opportunity.”
“Are you sure?” Eric asked and looked around the empty office. Marston’s desk seemed to be the only piece of furniture in use besides the counter with the coffeemaker on it.
“We’re beating ’em off with a stick, son. Not everyone is as qualified as you are but if you want to throw away your chance at the bonus, that’s on you.”
“There’s a bonus?”
“Did I forget to mention that? Oh, wow…it’s been a day, you know what I mean?” He slapped the young man on the back so hard it almost knocked the wind out of him.
“There’s an additional three-hundred-dollar bonus if you agree to start the experiment the same day you come in. You would not believe the number of punks who come in here looking for a free ride. Some of ’em come back, of course. An opportunity like this doesn’t present itself every day, you understand. Would you be interested in the additional three hundred?”
“I mean…uh, yeah, of course. Er…yes, sir.”
“Then initial on the last few lines and we’ll get you to your checkup.”
Eric nodded. He recalled going tubing down the San Marcos River as a kid and his dad arguing with the staff at the tube rental company about the liability form. It had been so embarrassing for his young self to watch him yell at the proprietor of the shop over the details of a document that everyone else signed without even hesitating.
His dad had eventually signed it, of course—his mom had made it very clear that they would not drive back to Dallas without even floating the river—and unsurprisingly, nothing had happened. All the fuss over the form had amounted to time wasted and people offended for no good reason.
He initialed the rest of the lines on the form.
“Great job, son! I don’t say this every day but I see great potential in you. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s head to the back and do that medical checkup you were asking about.”
Mr. Marston opened a door that led directly into a medical office that was more impressive only because the stainless steel table the doctor directed him to sit on looked like it had just been wiped down.
“Name?” the doctor asked.
“Don’t you have that on your chart?”
“It’s only a formality, sir.”
“Eric Johnson.”
“Say ahhhh.”
He complied and the man responded with a cursory glance down his throat.
“Are we feeling in good health today?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I’m going to check your reflexes, all right?”
“Yeah, they’re fairly good, especially eye-hand because—”
Eric stopped talking when the doctor rapped on his knee with a tiny rubber hammer. “Looks fine. Any allergies?”
“Only mango skin. It’s weird. Regular mango doesn’t do anything but if I eat any of the skin, I have to go the bathroom like immedia—”
“That’s fine. This is only a tiny prick, all right?”
“That’s what she said,” he quipped as the doctor stepped behind him. He winced as a needle jabbed into his skin at the base of his head where his neck met his skull. “Ouch!”
“Any irritation should fade,” the man said in a not particularly reassuring monotone.
He rubbed the back of his neck. “Why did you put it on the back of my neck? I thought vaccines were supposed to go in a big muscle like your arm or neck.”
“Are you sure your arms count as big, son?” Marston laughed at his own joke.
“It’s only a routine shot,” the other man said.
“So it is a vaccine?”
The doctor glanced at Marston, who cleared his throat. “We’re not supposed to know what it is or if it’s merely a placebo. Studies like these always need a control. You understand.”
“I’m not sure I understand—”
“All your questions will be answered. Now, if you’ll follow me, the doctor has a full plate.”
“He does? Because it looked like I was your last appointment of the day.”
“We respect our participants’ anonymity. It wouldn’t do for you to be swapping notes with the other participants.”
His hand was on Eric’s shoulder and he didn’t think he could resist even if he wanted to. He was led down a flight of stairs and a narrow hallway that ended at a heavy metal door.
“That NDA is about to kick in.”
“Does that mean I can describe this hallway on the Internet if I want to?” he joked.
“No, son. No, it doesn’t,” Martson replied clinically.
The man punched a series of numbers into a keypad and when the light at the top of the device flashed green, he held a badge out to be scanned. Almost instantly, the door unlocked with a heavy click and they stepped into a large room.
Two of the walls were lined with banks of seriously out-of-date computers, although the clickety-clack of the mechanicals’ keyboards was a sound most modern gamers had come to appreciate.
The third wall held a series of maps or maybe elevation diagrams on it. No, he decided as he scanned them. They were maps. Eric had played enough games to recognize that but they weren’t of Texas or the United States. Maybe some part of Canada? It looked like a series of islands speckled with snow.
He gave the fourth wall only a glance since it had a few crates stacked against it, plus brooms, a mop, and a couple of trash cans. The very center of the room, however, drew and held his attention. A metal ring about eight feet across stood elevated on a platform with a ramp leading to it.
In that moment, it felt like stepping onto the set of a cheesy sci-fi show or maybe into the mission control room in a less than spectacular video game where one could pick up missions, maybe improve their gear, or customize their character.
“All systems go, sir,” a woman in a lab coat and glasses said to Marsten.
“Acknowledged. Go ahead and fire ’er up.”
“Yes, sir.” She clicked some commands into her keyboard, leaned back, and turned her attention to the contraption. The central-most part of the metal circle began to spin. It was slow at first but it increased speed rapidly. Soon, the inner ring started to glow orange from the friction.
“What is this supposed to be?” Eric asked and suppressed a chuckle. He felt like a fool for having only now reached what appeared to be the only reasonable conclusion. When he looked around the room again, he wasn’t at all surprised that he couldn’t see any of the hidden cameras. There were so many places they could hide them. “All right, you guys got me.”
“Son?” Marston asked in evident bemusement.
“I mean…there are cameras here, right?” He didn’t want to belabor the obvious but some explanation seemed necessary.
“Of course there are cameras. We’ll need to go over the data we get from this medical scan. Step forward, son. Up the ramp. You step through that ring, I give you eight hundred dollars cash when you step out the other side.”
“Right.” He shrugged and walked up the ramp. When he’d reached about halfway, the spinning part flashed white before orange spread across the center. Sparks from the edge were tossed into the centrally spinning vortex. “Wow. These are amazing effects. I assumed you’d add this kind of stuff in post.”
“Shut up and keep moving, all right?” Marston responded, his tone grating.
Eric took another couple of steps until he stood directly in front of the disk. He could feel heat emanating from it and caught the smell of ozone. It seemed very elaborate for a special effect.
“Who do you work for again?” he asked. “Quantum…uh, Researchers? Do you guys mind if I Google you real quick?”
“Sir, we’re losing stability.”
“DARPA was clear, sir,” another tech said. “We need that data.”
“Wait—DARPA?” he asked. “Isn’t that, like, department of defense?”
“You’re damn straight, son. Your contribution today will help not only mankind but your country as well.”
At this point, he had significant doubts as he stared into the swirling orange disk. He took a step back. “I’m sorry. I’m not sure I want to do this. I thought this would be like a test for medications or something. I didn’t mean to waste your time.”
“No sweat, son. You didn’t waste no one’s time,” Marsten replied. “Off you get!” Without warning, he kicked Eric firmly on his butt.
He tumbled forward and stretched his hands out to catch himself as he fell into the disk.
The older man’s shout seemed to echo as he fell into nothing through a tunnel with flashing orange walls and nothing but blackness ahead of him.
Eric never stood a chance of getting out of this situation. What did he get pushed into? Is he going to come out the other side with superpowers or was he thrown into an entirely different realm?
