An Astronomical Snippet #1 for One Dark Future, Opus X 08

One Dark Future quote banner 1

Snippet #1 for One Dark Future

Are you ready for the first snippet of the next Opus X book? I’m very curiuos where this is heading!

April 1, 2230, Low Earth Orbit, Llewellyn Observatory

The horde of data windows and augmented reality overlays in Tony’s smart lenses didn’t do much to dull the excruciating pain of sorting through the piles of data.

So, he made up stupid questions in the middle of an almost incapacitatingly boring data review. His latest was how many years of his life would he be willing to give up to be the person or persons responsible for a great discovery?

Of course, everything depended on the prize. If it was significant enough, he had decided that twenty years would be the maximum. With the ability to prolong life, that wasn’t too much to rake off the end. With a large enough prize, he would be able to afford it.

Maybe six months for something mundane.

Tony had been excited when he was selected for the Vand Foundation Fellowship to Llewellyn Observatory. Not having to hustle for grants to support his graduate work in astronomy meant he should be able to concentrate on the science like he’d always dreamed. It wasn’t the foundation’s fault his dream wasn’t living up to reality.

Even as an undergraduate, he’d quickly understood science was five percent glorious discovery and ninety-five percent hard work.

Or was that ninety-nine percent perspiration, one percent inspiration? read more…

An Exciting Sneak Peek at Defenders of Magic

There’s a brand new book coming to The Leira Chronicles and we have a HUGE snippet to share with you.

As most of you know, Martha and Michael have been working on enhanced editions of The Leira Chronicles and re-releasing them. What you may not have known is there are 8 brand new books coming your way starting next week! Defender of Magic is the first of the new books and we were given a special gigantic sneak peek to share with you. Defender of Magic is on preorder and goes live on Monday! Check out part of the sneak peek below, then download the first three chapters at the link below the teaser!

###

The loud ring of Leira’s cell phone broke through her deep sleep. She groaned, rolled over in the bed and slapped at the nightstand. Correk stirred in his sleep and swatted at the air. “Yumfuck, those are mine,” he muttered, his face pressed into the pillow. Leira gave a crooked smile and put one hand on his back, brushing aside his long hair. She pulled the phone toward her face and squinted at the bright light from the screen.

Blocked number. Her heart rate picked up, hoping it was one of her new contacts.

It was taking some effort to cultivate the hidden eyes and ears in Washington DC. Turner Underwood was helping with the start of a network among the magicals and there was some progress. Still, no one was giving up Wolfstan Humphrey. Well, almost no one.

The Dark Families were easier. There were more disgruntled witches and wizards willing to talk for a price. Family, go figure.

I went out on my own to hunt these motherfuckers. Still takes a village… just a slightly darker one.

Leira sat up and swung her legs over the edge of the bed, kicking a moving box with her toe. “Fuck me!” she hissed, swallowing the rest of it. She glanced back at Correk and got up, weaving around the boxes to get out of the bedroom and down the hall.

“For the love of…” Her foot recoiled from a piece of broken stone in the unfinished part of her new house. Their new house.

“Hello?”

“You’re coming in hot. Everything okay?” General Anderson barked into the phone.

Leira swallowed, balancing on one foot and leaning against the kitchen counter. “Yeah, just stumbling around in the dark. Hit a few domestic land mines.”

“I have a tip for you that should make you feel better. I know you don’t work for me anymore, but this one is going to take your unique skill set.”

“One that can’t wait until the sun comes up?”

A Surprising Snippet for Nike Chronicles!

The Complete Nike Chronicles ebook cover

A fun and exciting snippet for the latest book from M.L. Bullock!

Have you checked out this latest book by M.L. Bullock? I just read the first chapter and I can’t wait until this book goes live tomorrow! Check this out and get ready for a snarky heroine on the beachy town of Dauphine Island!

Nik

Dusty Souvenir

Dauphin Island had more than its share of weirdness, as illustrated by tomorrow’s Mullet Toss, but it was home to me. It wasn’t as popular as nearby Sand Island or Frenchman Bay, but we islanders clung to our small-town identity like it was a badge of honor. Almost unanimously, islanders refused to succumb to the pressure of beach developers and big-city politicians who occasionally visited our pristine stretches of sand with dollar signs in their eyes. No matter how they sweet-talked the town elders, they left unsatisfied time and time again, with the exception of a lone tower of condominiums that stood awkwardly in the center of the island. As someone said recently at our monthly town meeting, “We don’t need all that hoopla.”

That seemed to be the general sense of things, and although I valued what they were trying to preserve, I didn’t always agree with my fellow business owners and residents. Still, I was just Nike Augustine, a girl with a weird name and a love for French fries. Most notably, I was the granddaughter of the late Jack Augustine, respected one-time mayor of Dauphin Island. What did I know? I was too young to appreciate the importance of protecting our sheltered island, or so I had been told. Island folk such as I made the bulk of our money during Spring Break and the Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo in July. It was enough to make a girl nuts.

But despite this prime example of narrow-mindedness, I fit in here, along with all the oddities like the island clock that never worked properly, the abandoned lighthouse everyone believed was haunted, and the fake purple shark that hung outside my grandfather’s souvenir shop. I reminded myself of that when the overwhelming desire to wander overtook me, as it threatened to do today and had done most days recently. I had even begun to dream of diving into the ocean and swimming as far down as I could. Pretty crazy since I feared the water, or more specifically, what swam hidden in the darkness. Another Nike eccentricity. Only my grandfather understood my reluctance, but he was no longer here to tell me I wasn’t crazy. My fear of water separated me from my friends, who practically lived in or on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico or Mobile Bay most of the year. read more…
