“Wow!” Asai exclaimed. “I can’t believe how crazy the past three days have been. We have had a line around the building from before daylight until we closed every day.”
“We certainly have been busy,” Yuko agreed. “I’m glad I listened to Eve and bought the property next door. Looks like we’re going to have to expand sooner than I thought.”
“Told you so,” Eve chimed in. “With the new simulations I have in beta testing, we will be this busy for the foreseeable future. Bringing Seki and his gamer friends in to test the simulations has really paid off. Some of their ideas for the first-person shooter games are really good and have proven to be extremely popular.”
“Plus, Seki gives Asai something to think about besides work,” Koda chided with a grin.
Asai blushed and stuck her tongue out at her cousin, causing everyone in the office to burst out laughing.
Koda returned to working on the computer at her desk. She pushed her chair back, her eyes wide as she looked at the screen.
“What’s wrong with you, Koda?” Asai asked. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost or something.”
Koda frowned. “I can’t believe what I’m seeing here. It can’t possibly be right.

Miko regained consciousness in total darkness, his throat dry and his body weak. He groggily tried to sit up but was stopped abruptly after only rising centimeters off the ground. He reached out and touched the obstruction, a rough, unforgiving surface that it took his addled brain a few seconds to realize was stone.
He struggled to get his thoughts in order, and suddenly, the memories from earlier came back to him. The seemingly abandoned base, the smell of smoke, the kitchen filled with…. His eyes shot open wide in the darkness as he remembered the dead cook, lying on the floor in the kitchen and him trying to get to the stairwell in the hangar to call back the Weres. That was the last conscious memory he had, but judging from the current predicament he was in more had gone wrong, much more.
He assessed his situation and determined that he was on his back and buried under an indeterminable amount of stone. Luckily, he had ended up in an area where the hangar had collapsed in a way that left him sheltered in a small opening. read more…

Yuko and Eve walked through the building’s open first floor, discussing the placement of walls and rooms as they went. The real estate agent walked a respectful distance from them, allowing them privacy while staying close enough to respond if either had questions. He didn’t know who these people were, but it was not often he got a call from the Prime Minister’s office requesting that he show a property he had listed to a dignitary.
“Eve, what do you think? This seems to be a lot of space to start out.”
“It is a little over sixteen thousand square meters on this level and another six thousand square meters on the second. We will have plenty of room to set up apartments for Koda and Asai on that level, along with workspace to repair damaged units and storage for replacements. The first floor gives us plenty of room for the sims and room for food vendors and party spaces to rent out for events.
“Some simulations I have in mind allow for multiple players, so we will need different size rooms based on the game. If anything, this may not be big enough soon. I suggest we also purchase the site next door in case we need room to expand.”

“Togu-san, the pirates have taken over Uegusuku Castle as we were told. Our scouts have seen only twelve pirates inside, but they’ve barred the gates from within and have lookouts around the wall,” Akio reported to his friend and commander.
“How do you suggest we take them?” Togu shot back as soon as he finished the report.
Akio’s reply was equally quick. “I suggest waiting until just before dawn and taking a small group to slip over the wall and open the gates from inside, after eliminating all the sentries. They will be less alert. We have watched them for a few days, and they always change the guards after first light. The men appear to be lax before they’re relieved, I believe we can eliminate them without rousing the others. Then it is merely a matter of cleaning out the vermin.”
Togu’s lips turned up in a hint of a smile, proud of how confident and competent his student had come as a military leader since he had started his training. “Hai, that is a good plan. Select the men to accompany you and make it so.”
Akio bowed to his Sensei and turned as soon as he dismissed him to assemble the team.
