ITS HELL TO CHOOSE Snippet 06 of …
University just outside of Philadelphia, Pa
âIâm telling you, James; this shit is getting real!â Nick looked at his computer screen scrolling through the messages in the chat room. âTxSatan99 is saying that he knows of three verified takedowns in France outside of Paris. One of the guys over there says he got the news that it was confirmed by one of the police he knows that MyNam3isADAM started printing shit out on the cops printer!â
Nick looked up over his laptop screen at his friend who was staring at his laptop screen, âGod, can you imagine? This guy not only finds the dirt, but he also hacked the cops own network to print the proof.â
He shook his head and looked back down, âWoo! Satan says there is a reward for anyone who can figure out who MyNam3isADAM is by those he is shooting down. The reward just got moved up to 30 bitcoin.âa
âShit,â James replied, âThatâs only like fifteen thousand right now. Thereâs no way Iâd turn in ADAM for any money. Besides, what kind of name is âSatanâ anyway?â
Nick shrugged, âI asked him, and he said Texas is hot as hell in the summer, so it seemed appropriate.â Nick kept reading the messages, âIâm not saying I want him caught. Iâm saying that there is a bounty on him.â
Nick looked up from his screen and reached over to snap his fingers in front of his friend’s face. James looked up annoyed, âWhat the hell?â
âDo you think he wants help?â Nick asked.
âWho?â James replied.
âAdam!â He pointed to his screen, âThis is bullshit.â
James scrunched up his face, âWhat the hell are you talking about? Is this another drop the shit on me and then run around the block thing for you?â
âNo. Look, that was back in high-school you should let it go, I did,â Nick said.
James leaned back in his chair, âThatâs because you werenât left holding the evidence when the cops came up. You know how hard it was to explain all of our computer equipment wasnât hacking stuff?â
Nick grinned, âYes, you have given me the play-by-play at least forty-two times in the last four years.â He spread his arms, âBesides, you got out of it! I would have been stuttering and been busted.â
âYou shouldnât have been trying to co-opt the schools wireless to change your fucking grades.â
âWhatever. So, answer my question.â
James gawked at his friend, âYou want to know if one of the preeminent hackers on the planet right now who has a price on his head wants you to help him?â
âWell, say it that way and it seems a little far-fetched.â Nick turned back to his screen, âFuck it.â
âWait, what âfuck itâ?â James began to get worried as Nick continued typing and didnât answer him. He stood up and walked around the little card table in the dorm room they shared to look over his friendâs shoulder.
âOh, that âfuck it,’â He responded.

>> Bethany Anne?<<
Yes?
Bethany Anne was grabbing her suit coat and slipping on her Christian Louboutinâs. John was outside the door to her rooms, and it was approaching the time she needed to get to the meeting with the lawyers.
>>Iâve run across a situation, I wasnât prepared for.<<
Really? Like what?
>> My hacker persona is getting requests from people asking if they can help me. <<
Bethany Anne stopped slipping her shoe on. What?
>>I have been receiving more and more requests from people on the dark web to see if they can help me.<<
She finished putting on her shoe and stood up. She moved around and pushed a chair under a table. It had a pair of Michaelâs pants neatly folded and hanging across the back. The man was so neat it was like he came from a Neiman Marcus magazine â âPerfect Male. Wise in years, Young Body, Cleans Up After Himself.â
He had left over an hour ago to mind read and give her his impression of the teams when she was about to go into the meeting.
How many?
>> Sixteen at this time.<<
You have sixteen hackers who are seeking you out to see if you need help?
>>Yes. They want to join in the ADAM Revolution. <<
Wait! What Revolution? You and TOM havenât started anything have you?
>>No. This was not part of my plan. I can see where they could be useful as I am dealing with more than I counted on with the stock market efforts. But, I donât know your expectations and whether having additional help is a good solution.<<
Did you want me to help ADAM start a Revolution?
Hell-to-the-No, TOM! You two did enough with China. Lord almighty! If it ever came out that an AI and Alien backed dark web-enhanced hacker group was trying to affect society ⌠Oh, I just shudder to think about the P.R. debacle that would be.
Bethany Anne stopped for a moment and added before opening her door, And the crap Cheryl Lynn would give me for releasing you two to do it!
But, itâs OK for just ADAM to play?
Bethany Anne nodded to John and finished her thought. Â
I cannot believe Iâm saying this, but yes. ADAM â keep me up to date with what is going on with people, but you can communicate.
IT’S HELL TO CHOOSE – Part 5 of …
New York City, NY – USA
âIâm telling you; they have to have technology that they absolutely need to provide to the world!â Johann Pecora spoke to the assembled men and women in a sub-assembly for the Advancement of the Human Race. While it was a very auspicious sounding name, it held a group of individuals who focused on the advancement of a select group of companies. Their members.
âThis group, this TQB Enterprises must have even more technologies if they can move shipping containers to the moon!â Johann continued.
The room held sixteen people. This room was in the basement of the Waldorf-Astoria. They used it whenever they needed to step away from the United Nations and meet off site. It wouldnât be odd for any of them to have a meeting here.
Sixteen nations were represented in the group. These representatives were connected to some of the most powerful, or most influential nations in the world. None of these people personally had power, but the interests of their countries which they did represent were behind the scenes movers and shakers.
âAnd how,â Ms. Stephanie Lee asked, âDo you intend to encourage them to supply what technologies they have?â
Johann considered the question, âWhat leverage do we hold?â Johann asked. âIt isnât like this is the first time we have come up against an entity which wasnât already a member.â
âThat,â Eugene Guarran said, âMight be true. However, we have never tried to go against this group.â
Johann waved that away, âSo what? We represent the combined might of twenty-two percent of the gross national product of the sixteen top countries in the world and those others we represent.â He took a breath but Eugene cut him off.
âDid you do the research on TQB?â He asked, âJust curious.â
Johann shrugged, âIâll admit I did not. Iâve had issues settling down three congressmen and one highly upset senator this weekend. I know that part of our ability to stay relevant in the short term for two of our requested projects is going to be dependent on our ability to, um, acquire access to this technology.â He finished lamely.
Anna Elisabeth Hauser interjected, âI will provide some information, and only this much.â All heads turned to the representative of the most secretive member of the group. âBecause it will be on pain of death if I am ever found out to have spoken this truth. Is this understood?â
The light skinned lady with the long blond hair looked into each eye to make sure she got a head nod. She didnât expect any of them to listen to her, but she had to try. In her country, there were whispers about a shadowy group in the highest areas of power. She had a glimpse of the elusive leader of TQB Enterprises and hadnât been able to shake the feeling she had seen the lady before.
At three oâclock in the morning, she had bolted up in bed and hurried to put on a housecoat. She made a special, secure request to confirm the facts of an incident which had happened years before in her country.
Anna Elisabeth had sought information on a bank heist. Not one that was successful, but one where the criminals had been captured but nobody knew how that had happened. The bank videotapes had mysteriously been erased. Yet, no one had ever been brought up on charges for failing to supply the police with the evidence.
She had seen a picture of a woman leaving with a hat over her face. It was the jawline that she remembered. Poised, it was confident, it was determined.
Her name had been on the list of those interviewed.
There could only be one answer to this question, and it scared Anna Elisabeth beyond reason. She had discounted these rumors ever since she had heard them back in her country. She had risen to this level of responsibility because she didnât scare easily. Oh, she knew the power and strength of respect for those more influential than her, and those more desperate. But that was all aspects of the great game.
Now, this caused her blood to feel like it was turning to ice. It had taken her eighteen years to get into this position, and she was about to throw it away in a futile gesture to warn fifteen others who she had worked with secretly. This conversation was going to be debated about for either weeks and months or years. If the former, then these idiots were going to ignore her. If the latter, then they will have learned enough to use caution.
Because with some entities, a bigger stick isnât the answer.
With all eyes on her, she started what she considered her farewell speech.
âThere is a group known in our country for over a thousand years, a group that never addressed. It has been stated that those in power will kill those underneath them if necessary to keep this secret.â
Now she had all of their attention. When you are known for your secrets, it doesnât take much to keep attention when you admit you are spilling one.
âWhile I have never heard of such a killing myself, I would not be surprised if it had happened in centuries past. This group has much influence and holds much wealth across many countries and in many lands throughout the world. Individually, they each hold controlling interests in many of the economies in both our nation and many of yours.â
âSurely you spin a great tale.â Johann interrupted, âIf there were still such a secret society we would know about it!â
Anna Elisabeth just stared at Johann. Not only because he was an arrogant prick, but he was rude besides. Johann felt the power of those he represented spoke to his own authority, and he never understood he was a figurehead. Anna Elisabeth always recognized that and sought to be the best she could be.
Until now.
She had been able to piece together what had happened at that bank this morning and knew that the rumors, the stories, the whispers were true.
âSorry,â he finally mumbled.
âI cannot tell you much, but I can inform you that if you choose to do something drastic, then expect severe in response. This group makes the Israelisâ eye-for-an-eye attitude seem plebian.â She looked around the table, âI share this because if TQB Enterprises is in an alliance with these people, then your directors are not safe. Your people are not safe, and I dare say your countries are not safe.â
At this Johann and two others around the table chuckled.
Well, that was the best she could do and still keep her head. âAs is my right, rarely employed by my country, I ask for a table vote on whether you intend to acquire TQB Enterprise technology through whatever means necessary?â
âWhatever means,â Stephanie said, âDoesnât always mean force, Anna.â
Anna turned to Stephanie Lee and smiled, âYou will not receive the technology any other way from this group. I require a vote right now whether the group will approve using force to acquire this technology.â
In her country, Ms. Lee would be open to being more circumspect to the question. But she had learned in this group, her countries long history was little understood and even less appreciated. She raised her hand while staring at Anna, âAll the way to force.â
Fourteen other hands rose up around her. Anna Elisabeth shrugged and moved her chair back. âThen I wish you the best of luck on your peaceful negotiations.â She picked up her notebook and tablet and pushed her chair back under the table.
âCan you give us any other hints?â Johann asked. She looked over to his face holding a smirk as if she was the little girl at school running from a scary story.
Fuck them all, she thought. She turned her head towards the group as she started for the door, âYes. Donât screw with the Arch-Angel.â
She opened the door and stepped through. They could hear the click-clack of her steps on the stone floors as she walked away.
IT’S HELL TO CHOOSE – Part 04 of …
Moon-Base-One
Penn could feel three of his team come up behind him and the three faces on his screen turned to those people over his shoulder, âHey guys!â Bobcat said, âWant some company?â
Bree responded, âWill you stuff more coffee in one of them?â
âCoffee?â Marcus answered, âWe just sent you twenty kilograms in a pod a couple of days ago.â
âSheâs a hoarder of the stuff,â Coach quipped. âShe stores half and then eyes everyone who looks like they are putting too much into the pot.â
Bree slugged Coach, âIâm not hoarding, you poor excuse for a coffee snob. Iâm making sure that the coffee is kept fresh!â
The three men on the video watched the two verbally spar. Coach turned slightly towards the barista, âThose are vacuum sealed containers that you are keeping, might I add, in vacuum!â
Bree sniffed, âNo rats.â
Rea Lea was smiling at the two behind them, a glint in her eye.
âHow the hell,â Coach began, âare rats going to get up here?â
âIs it completely impossible, one hundred percent, that there are no rats on any of these containers?â She asked magnanimously.
Coachâs mouth turned down into a slight frown, âIt approaches it!â
âBut, it ISNâT one hundred percent!â Her eyes opened wide, âAnd where am I going to be if the precious stash of coffee is ruined? It isnât like there is a Starbucks around the corner out here!â
âIt isnât like we canât send up another pod,â Marcus began only to have Bree turn to the monitor and stick a finger out at him.
âIf I wanted your take on how to help me with my post-apocalyptic coffee plan, I would have told you what to say.â She turned back to Coach to start into him again.
William leaned towards Marcus, âThat lady needs her caffeine I think.â
Marcus nodded his head, too shocked to say anything.
Bobcat was beginning to understand how Jeffrey felt when the three of them wouldn’t calm down. He looked at Penn, who shrugged in response.
Rea Lea piped in from behind Penn, âWhy donât we put them together up at L2?â
âWhat?â Asked Bree, momentarily pulled off of her coffee conversation with Coach.
âThatâs a good suggestion,â agreed Marcus. âWe can use the mitigated gravity situation at L2 and start creating a temporary space station with the containers.â
âThatâs not a small moon,â quipped Bobcat.
âItâs a hundred cargo containers all jacked together,â finished William. âI think we need to consider how best to connect them together, using the existing brackets. Jeffrey wants them gone post-haste.â
âDo they all have to be connected right now?â Asked Penn.
âNo,â answered Bobcat, âBut as soon as we have everything, we are delivering to you the first eighty. The following twenty will be along soon.â
âWhen should we expect the first eighty?â Penn asked.
Bobcat looked over his shoulder to Marcus and raised an eyebrow. Marcus grimaced, âLike you donât already know the answer.â Marcus looked at the screen and smiled, âIn about half an hour or so.â
That caused all four of the Moon-Base-One team listening in to stare at the screen like four adults who had been told they were expecting quintuplets.
Bree whispered into the silence, âIâll get the coffee.â
IT’S HELL TO CHOOSE Part 03 of …
Moon-Base-One
âPenn, do we have room up there for a few more containers?â a voice asked Michael Penn from the wall, catching his attention.
Penn looked over at the monitor where he saw Bobcat looking at him. With a grinning William and Marcus looking over Bobcatâs shoulder into the video camera from over 200,000 miles away.
Damn. He was doomed. There could only be one reason those three individuals were grinning at him like three Cheshire Cats from their lair back on earth.
They were about to set him up.
Penn took a moment to compose his thoughts and finally replied, âIs it too late to resign?â Their raucous laughter and glee traveled through the etheric link and out his speakers to travel down his container and was shared with those in the next container over.
Coach stuck his head through the opening, and the movement caught Pennâs attention. When he looked over, Coach asked, âWhat shit are we about to receive?â Then finished his question with a grin. Soon, Penn noticed that ReaLea and Bree had their heads sticking out from behind Coach.
Penn rolled his eyes and turned back to the recalcitrant Bobcat, âI take that is a no?â
âWell,â Bobcat replied, âI suppose I could ask Coach to grab your items from your cubicle and show you the door?â
Penn heard the snickers from his team. Penn grumped, âDamned difficult to walk back to Earth, you arse!â Bobcat smiled at him. âSo, lay it on me. How many are we talking?â Penn asked.
âOh, only about ten,â Bobcat started, and Penn felt his tension begin to release slightly, â⌠to the second power.â Bobcat finally finished.
Even the Coach crew didnât have a comment to that. âYou want us,â Penn pointed to himself and the offscreen group, âto pull together a hundred new containers up here?â Penn was trying to sound calm and collected and to NOT allow the squeak in his voice that was threatening to call his manhood a lie.
Bobcat looked over his shoulder as Marcus piped in, âI was for sending up a hundred and thirty, but the General wants thirty for a base in Australia.â Bobcat nodded his agreement as he turned back to the screen.
Penn answered, âMarcus, you are off my Christmas list this year.â Marcus made a face like he was hurt, âSo, is there a reason we need to stuff a hundred containers up here?â
This time, it was William who spoke. âYeah, we need to get some of this stuff off Earth. We should have enough people. Well, twenty, to put up there and ADAM is picking up chatter that we have some potential sticky-finger suggestions going on. Like major power players wanting to see whatâs up. Easier to move the candy jar than teaching the child he or she shouldnât get grabby.â
IT’S HELL TO CHOOSE – Part 2 of …
Seattle, Washington – USA
âAre you telling me,â a gruff voice shouted from the phone, âthat we have unexplainable tech that can lift stuff up to the moon and God only knows what else and you brains over in R&D canât even tell me HOW!â
The five men flinched when they heard the slam of a hand on a desk erupted from the conference room speaker.
He continued berating them, âI just had an awful, no let me change that, a scathing conversation with a senior Senator in charge of military appropriations. It becomes a pretty one-sided conversation when the CEO of a company the size of ours is not only caught unawares of new technology, our radar emplacements, and security satellites canât even spot the son-of-a-bitches!â
âBut sir!â Jeo Deteusche spoke out, âHow are we supposed to detect a revolutionary new drive system and or even spot these containers when they have a coating on them that reduces their radar signature to something the sizeâŚâ Jeo had been ignoring his bosses vigorous head shaking. Having been with the company for a little over a year, Jeo was fed up with the politics, the bullshit R & D priorities and the snide comments from people who had been âinâ the system for over a decade.
This company, he had decided, wasnât about protecting his country. It was about fleecing the people of the country of their money in taxes to keep the conglomerate going. They used the constant threat of the Russians or the Chinese coming up with new technology to maintain the budget money coming in hand over fist.
Jeo could imagine what the pissing match had been when the Senator had figured out that despite the ludicrous amount of funding, their tech was officially second-class.
By a large margin.
Jeo had been sitting in this room with these other four scientists for the last half an hour and had been fuming. He hadnât wanted to go into defense in the first place, but R & D positions like what he enjoyed doing with advanced metals and theoretical metal production in low gravity weren’t something that enticed too many companies.
So, he had few job options coming out of one of the highest rated engineering universities. He could have stayed in and moved up the Professorial track, but he wanted to apply the technology. Not just develop the concepts and sell off the licensing and move on.
He wanted to be a part of a team that was building the next stage of space exploration.
Two minutes ago, before he started what he knew would be his last conversation as an employee of this company, he placed a small little phrase on his Twitter account. One that wasnât directly connected to him, so he had no idea how they had figured it out.
He shrugged mentally; it wasnât his to wonder why, but just type out the twelve characters and then start the last âhoorah!â he would accomplish as a member of the R & D team. He looked at his social account and smiled at the little phrase. It only said:
#WEWILLBUILD.
ITS HELL TO CHOOSE – Part 1 of …
Paris, France
âIf they donât stop aiming cameras at me, Iâm not going to be responsible for the damages.â Bethany Anne murmured to Michael under her breath.
The two of the were walking along Avenue de Champs-Elysees after taking a stroll through Bethany Anneâs Mecca – the Christian Louboutin St Honoreâ store on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoreâ.
They had started in the line waiting to enter the store like everyone else when a couple of those waiting in line realized who she was. A couple of covert camera pictures had occurred and then the social sphere got busy, and a couple of camera âjournalistsâ from the gossip magazines came in and started taking pictures. Some annoyingly so.
Michael noticed that a few were taking shots from an incredibly long way using very long telephoto lenses. He pulled up his phone and quickly typed a note to Tabitha and put it away.
He would have a report from her within the next few hours he suspected. Certainly by tomorrow. If there was something to hack and delete, he felt comfortable it would be gone.
If not, he would know more.
Within a few minutes, the manager of the store came around the corner and up to the two of them. He discreetly tried to ask Bethany Anne to step ahead of everyone and come inside.
She absolutely refused, which frustrated the management. Finally, the security got involved and explained to Bethany Anne that she was causing a small security issue with the traffic and extra paparazzi taking pictures outside on the sidewalk.
She pursed her lips and waved the manager closer and spoke into his ear. The manager nodded once and then walked back to disappear into the store for a minute.
Michael smiled to himself as he continued his scan. Eric and John were each half a block away, also keeping their eyes out, but each knew that Michael would die before allowing anyone to get to Bethany Anne.
That was good enough for them.
A moment later, the manager stepped out of the store and started handing unique cards that were each signed by him to every one of the people in the line at that time. He bypassed Bethany Anne and continued down the line. When he came back up, he nodded to Bethany Anne and the two were taken inside.
Once this step was accomplished, he stepped back outside and explained to each of the customers these cards were good for a purchase of a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. This was in appreciation for allowing Bethany Anne to step ahead of them, or they could surrender the cards for a $3,000 gift to three charities that focused on helping the families of those hurt or killed in terrorist attacks.
Michael didnât need any special abilities to hear the raucous cheering going on when those lined up outside found out they held a special card for a pair of shoes in their hands.
He watched Bethany Anne, and the only reaction she had was a slight blushing and ducking of her head.
He knew at that moment that not only was she the right pick to help clean up the UnknownWorld, but she was also the right woman for him.
If he could just woo her.
WE WILL BUILD 15 of …
Bethany Anne was smiling and Kevin noticed that Lance seemed in thought when he asked, âWhat are you thinking?â
She shrugged, âIf we had enough for a night crew, they could easily handle any night-time incursions. I doubt much would cross their sense of smell and we could easily send two out in a Pod anywhere on base property very quickly. If something happens to them, then they have the best chance of survivingâŚâ
âOther than Wechselbalg.â Lance pointed out.
âTrue.â She stood up and walked a few feet to the left and turned. Talking while she paced. âBut the truth is that both Vamps and Weres are just two sides of the same technology. I can get rid of the sun issue, but any Vamps that we recruit would need to be trusted before I offer that solution to them.â
âWhy donât you trust Vamps?â Kevin asked. Lance turned to him and raised an eyebrow. Kevin remembered Lance dressing him down for doing a full background check on a blind date and told him, âIâm just curious.â
Bethany Anne answered, âItâs actually a good question. Ever since Iâve been turned, Iâve been introduced to ass-hats whether they are Vamps or Weres. The truth is that ass-hats are everywhere. When you give them superior skills it can make a tiny ass-hat that is bearable into a significant ass-hat. With Michael, I have a good chance of making sure we get decent people. I donât have enough of a rep with the Wechselbalg yet to get them here on base with us. Peteâs handling that side for me right now.â
âAre you sure you have Michaelâs help?â
She turned to her dad, âI heard you the last time you got your âdad batâ out and jumped into my personal life, Iâll go see him, ok?â
Lance put his hands together on his desk, looked above her head for a second then looked her in the eyes, âYes, I think that will do.â
âThank you.â
âSo long as itâs soon.â
Bethany Anne opened her lips to let her dad see she had her tongue held firmly by her teeth. His grin caused her to smile. âFine dad, Iâll go see him tonight if he has time.â
âOh baby,â Patricia said from behind Bethany Anne. âHeâll have time.â
WE WILL BUILD 14 Of …
âI think thatâs his idea, sweetie.â Patricia said.
Bethany Anne turned to her, âYou too?â
âMe too what? Iâm just pointing out the obvious. Iâm not sure what happened to cause you be so upset with him.â
Bethany Anne crossed her arms. âNothing. Happened.â
Patricia looked over to Lance who was watching his daughter and minutely nodded his head up and down. âI see. Well, if you want to have a proper relationship with such a powerful supporter you need to go down there and have a discussion about the ânothingâ.â
She stared at her dad who stared right back. Finally, she dropped her eyes, âIâll take it under advisement.â
âNo, you will go and do it.â Lance said. Bethany Anne brought her head back up in a flash, but Lance kept going, âYou canât have such a significant opportunity become a potential misunderstanding between you and Michael. Left unresolved it has potential for an enemy to use against you. That is bad leadership just because youâre having a spat about God only knows what, young lady.â
She jerked her head up and down.
Lance turned back to Kevin, âWhat is your concern about security?â
Kevin flipped a page over, âWe are implementing a large amount of electronic surveillance devices and triggers across the property, the problem is both the size of the base and how easy small drones can get on the property.â
Bethany Anne asked, âAre we talking quad-copters or what?â
Kevin turned his page one more time, âThose, plus tiny insect devices, bugs on items brought in, long range laser devices against the windows in the R&D area plus the normal people, data transfers and other miscellaneous items.â
Bethany Anne pulled a leg up and put her elbow on her knee putting her chin in her hand.
Kevin looked over to Lance who shrugged his shoulders, out of the corner of his eye, Kevin caught Patricia putting up one finger.
âWe need vampires.â
Patricia coughed suddenly and then laughed a little, Kevin going to pound on her back but she noticed and said, âNo! Itâs nothing. I just wasnât expecting her to say we needed âmoreâ vampires!â
WE WILL BUILD 13 of …
TQB Base, Colorado – USA
âHi boss.â
Bethany Anne looked to her left as she was walking down the hallway. âHey Kevin, how did the security review go?â
Kevin McCoullagh stepped out of the room he was in and joined Bethany Anne as they walked towards Lanceâs office. âWell enough. Almost all of the troublemakers left without causing us a problem. Canât say Iâm terribly happy about letting Robert go without something to remember me by.â
Bethany Anne cocked an eyebrow at him, âMy, someoneâs in a bloodthirsty sort today arenât they?â
Kevin shrugged, âIt pisses me off that he would so easily sell out. I have to question if he would have done that while he had on the uniform? Anyway, I didnât say anything.â
âGood, the team has a plan to monitor the software he installed and see what they were targeting and then feed false information upstream.â The two of them arrived at Lanceâs office. Bethany Anne knocked a couple of times sharply, then opened the door.
âBethany Anne!â Patricia grinned at her from behind her desk and stood up. Lance and Patricia had decided they wanted one large office with the desks at both sides of the office facing each other. If you placed a mirror in the middle of the room, it would look the same. Except the mirror wouldnât show Lanceâs occasionally grumpy face on the other side.
âHey Patricia.â Bethany Anne accepted a hug from the woman. She didnât look much older than Bethany Anne now. It solved the issue of calling her âmomâ when she looked more like her sister.
Bethany Anne turned to see her dadâs empty chair, âDad around?â
Patricia sat back down, âYes. He went to find a couple of Ding-Dongs. He can get grumpy in the middle of the afternoon if he didnât sleep enough the previous night. I found the sugar and chocolate cheers him up.â
Kevin asked, âNo worries for his health?â He turned to face the two young looking women who were staring at him. âMy mistake, I wasnât thinking. No calorie worries.â
A voice spoke behind them, âHey Kevin, hey baby!â Bethany Anne received a hug from her dad, Kevin a slap on his back. âReady to talk base?â
Kevin closed the door, âYup.â
Patricia grabbed her laptop and Kevin turned one of Patriciaâs chairs around and pulled it over so everyone was facing Lance.
Lance spoke, âWe can talk about the three company R & D groups a little later.â He then asked Kevin, âWhat did we learn from Michael?â
Kevin answered, âWe have a defense industry probe already into our business. It seems the fact that you are the big guy for TQB Industries and residing here on your former base has made everyone assume you have a huge military play going on. That was the âcore focusâ of three people that Michael read. We havenât fired any of them yet. We are waiting for additional people to help cover their roles before we let them go.â
Bethany Anne asked, âWhat kind of people do you need?â
Kevin replied, âSecurity, engineering, maintenance and operations. Pretty much all of the core people.â
Patricia interrupted, âIs it going to be hard to find people here in the States that know military and are safe?â
âNo, we proved when selecting crew for the two ships that it can be done.â Bethany Anne answered, âHowever, we need to be thinking about merging more countries into our mix. I donât want there to be an âall U.S.A. all the timeâ answer to everything.â
âWhat about vetting them? When you crewed your ships, I understand from Frank that he took care of that for you.â Lance said as he unwrapped a cigar and bit on it.
Bethany Anne wrinkled her nose, âGah! Those things donât smell good anymore, not like they did when I was young.â She moved in her chair, trying to get more comfortable. âDad, are you irritated with my comment about more Americans?â
âHoney,â Patricia said, âyour dad knows we canât stay so heavy U.S., but let him work through it his own way.â
Kevin hid a smile behind his hand which he quickly killed when Lanceâs eyeâs turned to him.
âBetween Frank, Dan and ADAM Iâm pretty sure we can accomplish the same as we did for the Polarus and the Ad Aeternitatem. Plus, we have Michael to do a final.â
âAbout Michael.â Kevin interrupted, âHe says that the Pods are definitely a nice solution, but he would prefer a more personal experience and he requests a stewardess for his next flight.â This time, Kevin didnât hide his smile when Bethany Anne blushed.
âIâll give him a âstewardessââŚâ
âI think thatâs his idea, sweetie.â Patricia said.
WE WILL BUILD 12 OF …
Robert walked into Hanger noticing that it was temporarily quartered into four distinct working areas with security around the perimeter. He raised an eyebrow when he noticed Kevin standing over to the side with his arms crossed. Robert started walking towards him while watching all of the rest of the activity on the large floor.
âWhatâs up with the tables and everything Kevin?â
Kevin McCoullagh looked over to Robert McCarty, his senior member for the Corps of Engineers on the base and answered, âThe company is doing a security check of everyone that came on board and wishes to stay since the main building is completed.â
Robert stood next to Kevin and watched for a couple of minutes, âI see them going into the two offices, but it doesnât look like they are in there for more than a couple of minutes.â He turned towards Kevin, âDo they have some sort of lie detector device?â
Kevin kept his face focused out towards the floor and lied through his teeth. âDonât know. Iâm to understand that it is some of the new technology from one of the companies the General is over-seeing. So, for all I know he brought it back with him.â
âYou didnât have to do this?â Robert asked.
âIn a way, mine was a lot longer and more thorough. Iâm sealed from disclosing anything about my experience, but Iâm pretty sure they got all of the truth out of me they wanted.â
Robert turned back to the floor, âWhat happens if they donât pass?â
âReleased with four monthsâ pay. Or theyâre given the option of working for another company, if a position they are qualified for is available. In that instance all moving costs for the employee and their family will be paid. So far Iâve heard of six taking the package without even going through the security check.â
Robert asked, âScared to take the test?â
Kevin laughed, âNo! They were just tired of the cold weather and found out the company has some operations in Southern California and Florida.â
âThat sounds nice, my bones are starting to seize up mid-summer just thinking about some of the cold we get here.â
Kevin grunted, âWell, if you want warmer climes, Iâm not going to hold you back, but you need to help me find a qualified candidate or two if you can.â
Robert watched the people entering the offices, âYou say the company will pay the moving expenses?â
âYes, for you and one household to go with you. Although for you, I imagine the opportunities are pretty wide-ranging.â
âOh?â
âYeah, they are building in other areas as well, plus in Europe.â
âNo shit?â
âNope.â
Robert seemed to be thinking for half a minute. âIâll be back in a bit. I need to go call Tricia. She keeps on my ass about living near the water and if I donât tell to her about this moving option and she finds out âŚâ Robert left it hanging.
Kevin simply nodded his understanding as Robert started walking towards the door heading outside and pulled his cellphone out.
Kevin hoped Robertâs âwifeâ chose to move, because it would really suck to have to fire the guy for taking money to pass along base secrets.
Or bury him, depending on who he had sold out to. Kevin understood that behind door number two over there, was Michael. And he was just passing time with most of these simple mind reviews waiting to see if Robert really wanted to try and become a mole in the organization.
Something that Kevin McCoullagh wasnât going to allow. Tom Billings had found evidence on three computers. Software had been installed to start passing information outbound in three weeks. Tom had deactivated the software and upgraded the firewalls, stopping information going outbound without authorization from the special data transfer rules now in place.
It would be good enough until ADAM brought AGILITY online, the refined version of himself capable of being run on the massive number of servers Tom had installed and fired up in the past three weeks.
Which was good, because when Kevin first learned that Robert was guilty of setting up all of the snooping software, he wanted to leave him a bloody wreck. It took everything he had to act as if he didnât know of Robertâs duplicity. Knowing they were mere days from AGILITY going active had stayed his hand.
Just barely.
