The Party is Over in This Snippet of Interstellar Security and Extraction Services Book 1

Never Too Expensive banner

Interstellar Security and Extraction Services Book 1: Never Too Expensive

The trained experts of the transportation branch of Intergalactic Securities can handle anything thrown at them. Even a spoiled heiress who is parting a little too hard.

Music throbbed in Captain Juno Kalandros’ ears as she slipped through the club. Brilliant, colored strobes cut through the darkness, revealing sentients of all sorts in various stages of inebriation.

The driving beat called to her primal instinct to move with it, but the volume had already given her a headache, and the sea of humanity pressing close triggered other instincts.

Ramses Algeroth appeared more at ease in their surroundings. It wasn’t his usual scene, but his head and body moved subtly in time with the music, and he mouthed some of the lyrics.

“What’s our approach?” he asked as the music lulled, allowing them to speak without yelling.

“The package is in the VIP section.” Kalandros pointed out the area. “We need to get her out without causing too many problems, which means getting through those two bouncers.”

“Right. You want me to crush them?”

Ramses wasn’t a large man. He wasn’t much taller than her and lacked the bulk of most security bruisers, but he was highly effective. That was why she’d picked him for this mission. He doubled as her bodyguard, but he was the talent—the muscle.

As Kalandros and Ramses spoke, the two bouncers denied entry to a handful of drunk idiots. “Let’s try a different approach first.”

***

One of the VIP bouncers lifted a hand to halt their progress. “No admittance. It’s a private event today.”

“Great approach,” Ramses whispered. He popped his neck and drew a deep breath. It took a moment for him to be completely ready for a fight.

Kalandros laid a hand on his shoulder to keep him from going off on the poor bastards and muttered, “Not yet.”

She faced the bouncer with a small credit chit extended between two fingers. “We don’t need to go inside. I only need you to deliver a message to the young miss partying in there ‘like there ain’t no tomorrow’ according to her social media feeds.

“Her name is Justina von Atkin, and she’s wearing a short black skirt, brightly colored glasses, and a pink shirt that says ‘Party Don’t Stop’ with all three words misspelled. If you’d please inform her that her escort has arrived, I’d be most appreciative.”

The pair of bruisers exchanged a look and shrugged. Finally, one took the chit and headed into the VIP room. It wasn’t a complicated message, but Kalandros had a feeling he would screw it up anyway. That might be for the best. From what she’d heard, it sounded like their package wouldn’t cooperate with any attempts to bring her home.

“See what I mean?” Kalandros patted Ramses on the shoulder. “I told you there are far better ways to lubricate society than resorting to your usual tactics.”

“A lube for every circumstance.” Ramses waggled his eyebrows as his gaze swept the club. He winked at a pretty woman dancing nearby and dazzled her with a roguish grin as she checked him out.

The captain shook her head and fought to hide her smile.

Ramses added, “We’ll see if your errand boy got slicked up enough when he comes back.” He smirked as she rolled her eyes, then sobered. “Besides, even if our package does want to head back with us, we might have problems.”

Kalandros scowled but quickly smoothed her expression. Ramses had a point.

If their package wanted to leave—doubtful, considering her current content uploads to her social media feeds—she was hanging with the wrong crowd. These people looked at the CEO’s daughter partying in their relatively lawless district and saw dollar signs beyond what she dropped for their alcohol and drugs.

Ramses probably would have to break through and drag her out.

The captain sighed. None of what they were going to do was technically illegal, but there were still a lot of ways for the wrong people to throw a hissy fit if they happened to mishandle someone’s darling little princess.

The bouncer wasn’t in the VIP section for long and returned with no sign of their package.

“Nobody matching your description was present in the VIP lounge, sorry,” the bruiser growled in a deep voice.

“See, I happen to know you’re lying to me.” Kalandros pulled out her tablet and held it up so both bouncers could see the screen, where pics and vids showed off the inside of the room and their package. “Or are you telling me that Miss von Atkin isn’t live-streaming her party with her newfound friends from your lounge?”

Both men shook their heads.

“Must not be a live feed, maybe from some other day,” the other muttered and shrugged.

“Damn. I hoped it wouldn’t come to this.” Kalandros quickly waved Ramses down. “I don’t know what you’re hoping for, but I’m willing to pay you a little more to ensure our client leaves the premises unharmed. You’ll have to show me the first payment did some good, though.”

“Are you deaf or just stupid?” They moved forward, and one of them laid hands on her shoulders. “I told you Van…whatever her name is, isn’t here, so fuck off!”

The shove was a little more powerful than it needed to be. The captain stumbled backward and would’ve fallen if Ramses hadn’t caught her.

“Thanks, Ramses. I appreciate that.” She straightened, then brushed off her shoulders.

Ramses smiled. “I hate to say I told you so—”

“The hell you do.”

“You’re right.” He cleared his throat. “I told you so. Now can we do this my way?”

“Have at it. And have fun.”

She doubted he would. Ramses was violent by necessity, not by nature. Still, something chilling shone in his eyes when he faced the pair of bouncers and drew a deep breath. He had half a dozen combat implants, readying him for a fight in ways that regular humans couldn’t achieve. Plenty of people had the tech, but Kalandros was always willing to put her money on her man.

Not that he was “her man” in the romantic sense—he was part of her crew.

That said, Kalandros privately enjoyed watching how Ramses attacked. There was no warning, no squaring off against the pair. He lunged at the closest bouncer, who extended his hand, expecting to stop the smaller man without much effort.

Ramses slipped past like it wasn’t there and flowed into a double kick at the man’s knees. A loud crack sounded, and the bouncer let out a strangled cry of pain before a deft yank flipped him over Ramses’ hip to crash into the steps.

Her crew member was upright again in the blink of an eye, facing the second heavyset bouncer closing on him. He smoothly sidestepped the charge and brought his knee up into the bruiser’s gut, knocking all the air from his lungs before sending him staggering back with an uppercut to the face.

The bouncer’s broken nose bled profusely, and he was still dazed from the strike as Ramses snapped around in a high kick. It thudded across the side of his neck, dropping him immediately.

A hint of satisfaction showed in Ramses’ eyes as he turned to the bruiser that had shoved his captain and straddled the man’s chest.

It took three more strikes for Kalandros to realize what was happening—Ramses was teaching the man a lesson. She shook her head. So far, no one seemed to care that they’d bounced the bouncers, but that would soon change if Ramses didn’t stop.

“The man is down, Ramses. I’m fine. He made a mistake, but not a lethal one.”

Ramses snapped around as she patted his shoulder, his dark eyes open wide, and nostrils flared. He carefully lifted off the battered man and took the handkerchief she offered.

“Sorry, got a little lost in the heat of the moment.” He wiped some blood from his face and cleaned his knuckles before handing her the stained cloth.

Kalandros shook her head. “Keep it. Now, we still have a job to do.”

He tucked the handkerchief into his pocket. Then he grabbed the bouncer by the wrist and dragged him to the VIP entry, which required a handprint to open. Ramses muscled the man upright and pressed his hand against the scanner.

The door opened, and a wave of vapors, sounds, and smells slammed the captain’s senses and nearly made her choke as she strode through.

More guards stood inside, but before they could react, Kalandros snapped her hand forward. The grip of her hidden caster settled in her palm, and she aimed at the two men.

“Stand still,” she shouted over the loud music and other guests partying. “Otherwise, I’ll let my friend beat your skulls in.”

Neither resisted as Ramses disarmed them and got them on their knees. Kalandros kept the caster on them. “We’re here for Justina von Atkin, on her mother’s orders. We know she’s in here. Where?”

One guard jerked his chin at a shadowy alcove.

“Ramses.” She didn’t need to say anything else. He headed over, then the sounds of a tussle floated out.

He emerged soon after, dragging the girl by her collar. She was a tiny thing, barely breaking a hundred and fifty centimeters in height, but her attitude was twice that size and so were her incessant insults.

Another figure staggered out of the alcove. “Guards!” Then his wits caught up to his vision, and he shut up, raised his hands, and retreated.

Kalandros kept an eye on everything as Justina twisted and fought against Ramses.

“Who the fuck are you? Let go! Ow! I said let go, you idiotic sheepshagger!”

“We’re taking you back to your family on your mother’s orders,” Ramses growled, still moving forward despite the young woman’s uncoordinated attempts to stop him. Even trying to trip him wasn’t doing much good.

“Family? That’s rich. What, did Mommy Dearest spin you a sob story that I got kidnapped? I didn’t. I came here because I wanted to party and have fun.

“I was, too. Didn’t you bother to check my social feeds? Goddamn asshole. You might be cute, but your dad should’ve shot his load into a sock instead of procreating. If brains were dynamite, you wouldn’t have enough to blow your nose. People! Do something about this jizz-guzzling shit-for-brains!”

No one was stupid enough to move as Ramses dragged her out.

***

No one tried to be a hero between the club and the FIS Odysseus’ berth, either. A flash of the captain’s caster or Ramses’ chilling glare with a finger drawn across his throat sent a clear message the few times things got tense. The rich bitch’s party was over.

Kalandros wished Justina got the message too.

Finally, they reached the ship. Ramses wasn’t out of breath despite literally dragging their package along more than once. “Here we are, Captain. Time to lock and load. Have you decided where we’re stashing the degenerate brat? If not, I have some ideas.”

Before she could answer, the hatch opened to reveal the third member of their party, Petty Officer Pietr Ludovski. He offered them a broad grin as they boarded the ship. “Velcome back, Kaptain. Ramses. Now… Vhen I said you should work on your skills for picking up girls, my friend, this is not exactly vhat I had in mind.”

That earned him a scowl while Ramses forcefully sat the girl on the deck as the hatch closed. “That kind of club isn’t my scene, Pietr. Neither is this spoiled brat.”

The brat in question sucked in a breath. “Why you—”

“You haven’t tamed ze shrew?” Pietr winked and spoke over her.

“The only taming I’d like to do with this one involves—”

“You couldn’t handle me with all three of you trying, you jackass!” Justina yelled, cutting off whatever Ramses was about to say.

“Enough!” Kalandros barked. “Secure her where she can’t hurt anything, including herself, and get ready for takeoff.”  She stalked away, heading toward the bridge.

Ramses pinned the corporate brat with a withering look as he dragged her to her feet. “We got you here, didn’t we? Besides, I’d rather pass a kidney stone than another minute in your company.”

Justina screeched in wordless fury as she flailed wildly, trying to hit, kick, and bite him. Pietr grunted when a few of her blows landed on him instead. When the captain’s countdown warning rang through the ship, the two men looked at each other in wordless communication and nodded.

Moments later, the strung-out party bitch hung between them as they carried her to the nearest emergency jump seat with crash-webbing and strapped her in. Ramses locked out the automatic release function and glowered at her. “Try not to hurl. If you do, you’ll thank me later for keeping you upright so you don’t choke.”

He and Pietr left without another word.

***

A few hours later, outraged shrieks shattered the relative quiet of normal shipboard life in space.

“I knew it was too good to last.” Ramses scowled. “Too bad her drugs du jour didn’t keep her passed out for longer. At least moving her to the brig was easy.”

“She probably needs ze head.” Pietr shrugged when Ramses looked annoyed. “Nature calls after parties like that.” A sly grin blossomed. “Being helpful is useful vhen trying to pick up ze girls.”

The captain smothered a smile at the ribbing. “Pietr’s right.” She couldn’t prevent her snicker at Ramses’ look of betrayal. “About our package needing the head,” she added as the petty officer chortled. Quick finger-flicks indicated both men. “See to her basic needs, then bring her to the common area.”

***

A short time later, the three joined Kalandros. The girl was running her mouth again, heaping indiscriminate abuse on crew and captain alike as they entered the common area.

“Miss von Atkin,” the captain interrupted. “Sit.”

The girl seethed but didn’t have much choice since Ramses and Pietr “escorted” her to a chair.

Kalandros studied her for a moment. “You recall why you’re here, correct?”

Justina’s eyes blazed. “I already told you I was at the club because I wanted to be. I don’t want your so-called rescue.”

“You don’t have a choice. Our contract is to bring you home.”

A calculating gleam entered her eyes. “I’ll pay you double to let me go.”

The captain snorted. “You don’t have that kind of money, and we both know it.”

Justina threw her head up defiantly. “You don’t know everything.”

“I know enough to know that you don’t have the money. Even if you did, I’m not about to break a contract so you can keep partying.”

“Contract?” She sneered. “More like a bunch of low-class wretches accepting the scraps my mother dishes out.”

“Considering you also take what she gives you, does that make you a wretch like the rest of us?” Ramses mused.

“Shut up, you useless shit. I was talking to the conniving bitch you take orders from.”

“Miss von Atkin, our instructions are to return you unharmed, but if you don’t restrain yourself, I’ll have you gagged.”

Pietr gestured impatiently and scowled. “That’s all? I vas going to threaten to seal ze brat in an airlock for ze rest of ze trip to make sure she behaves.”

The captain arched an eyebrow in surprise. Pietr was usually the milder-mannered of her crew. “That could create some problems, Petty Officer Ludovski. I’ve noted your suggestion, though.”

“Who the fuck do you people think you are to threaten me like that?” Justina spat. If looks could kill, Pietr would be dead on the spot. “Go ahead and try it, you self-righteous twatwaffle. An airlock? I dare you.

“Maybe you should let bitchzilla here think for you. She at least understands what a contract with my family means. You, on the other hand… If you were twice as smart, you’d still be stupid.”

Pietr growled, “You do not get to—”

The brat unexpectedly lunged from her seat and slammed her fist into Pietr’s jaw. It wasn’t a particularly good punch, but it—and sheer surprise—were enough to make him stagger back.

Before the girl could follow up, Ramses was on her. Kalandros hadn’t seen him move, but the effects were easier to follow. A hard fist smacked the girl’s jaw with enough power to drop her to the deck.

She would be up in a minute or so, but it was enough to shut her up, at least for the moment.

“Sorry, Captain.” Ramses turned his attention to Pietr, who was rubbing his jaw.

“I could’ve handled it, you know,” the petty officer muttered.

“I know, but I’ve been itching to hit the little shit since the club.”

“I understand ze feeling.” Pietr shook his head.

Kalandros massaged her temples. “I appreciate that she provoked you, but don’t let it happen again. Take her to the secure bunk.” She lowered her hands and raised an eyebrow. “Make sure not to accidentally drop the brat or run her into any walls on the way. No need to cause our package any further damage.”

The pair nodded. Ramses lifted the girl and motioned for Pietr to join him as he carried her out.

“You know we’ll end up listening to our ‘esteemed passenger’ bitch and moan for the rest of the trip, right?” Ramses hefted her a little higher as they walked.

Pietr was silent until they reached the galley. He paused, and a wicked grin popped out as he nodded at the stasis lockers inside. “Maybe it does not have to be so uncomfortable.”

“They’re supposedly quite safe to transport humans and many other species in…” A slow smile brightened Ramses’ face

MARMALADE AND MAGIC BANNER

Marmalade and Magic Book 1: The Last Witch of Kalhoun Holler

Jemma and Tad moved to the woods to get away from it all and start fresh. Nothing takes your mind off the past like a new mystery

“Why’s it got to be so damn hot here?” Jemma Nox muttered as she peered toward the sun between the pine trees around the house. It glared down, mocking her. She searched the sky, but no signs of rain were visible. She glanced down. The grass all over the property was brown. It had been an unusually dry season.

Summer was at its peak. The August air was as hot and sticky in Kalhoun County, Tennessee as it had been in Jemma’s former home in the suburb of Hendricks, Indiana. The sixteen-year-old swiped dark auburn hair out of her sweaty face and sighed. The cool of autumn couldn’t come soon enough.

Something about her new home seemed to perpetuate the heat. It just wouldn’t end. The summer had been long, hot, and strenuous. In former years, Jemma Nox would have been more than happy to have summer last forever, but this year was different. She had two years of high school left, and she wanted nothing more than to leave this simmering summer behind and get on with her life.

New beginnings were ahead, and she didn’t want to think about her past life anymore. She was tired of everything that had happened before. So damn tired.

“I need a nap,” she grumbled as she trudged up the front porch steps of her new home. Though they had begun the moving process a week ago, they had made little progress on unpacking since their arrival. She walked in and had to maneuver around piles of unopened boxes. She frowned. Her father hadn’t done a very good job of marking the boxes. She had no way in hell of telling which box held which items, and ones marked Fragile were overturned or set precariously on top of other boxes.

Jemma sighed, wishing for the nap she’d been thinking about all morning. She made her way around the box obstacles into the tiny kitchen, which was combined with an even smaller dining room. Her father sat at the round table. For some reason, he had unpacked a red and white checkered tablecloth but little else.

Jemma shook her head but couldn’t help smiling. Her father, hearing her soft footsteps on the wooden floorboards, looked up. She leaned against the doorframe between the kitchen and the living room, arms crossed. She was tall like her father and had similarly shaped features. Her auburn hair and light brown eyes, however, had been inherited from her mother.

Thaddeus Nox went by the nickname “Tad.” It was so normal among his family and friends that even his daughter used it rather than “Dad.” He looked up, his dark eyes meeting Jemma’s. His brown hair had grown almost to his shoulders, and his new beard was streaked with gray. He hadn’t had long hair or a beard the entire time he was married to Jemma’s mother, but he was trying “a new look.”

Jemma tried to suppress her thoughts about this new Tad since one of her greatest weaknesses was her inability to keep her feelings from showing on her face. He looked like a mountain man, which, she decided, made sense, given their new surroundings.

“Hey there, Jem. Look at this.” His voice was cheery as he beckoned her in. Jemma liked being with her father when he was cheerful. It was a good change after the years of depression he had endured as she watched helplessly. He scooted a stool over for her to sit on. Jemma didn’t know where it had come from, but she sat on it and leaned forward. Her father extended a pamphlet.

Jemma sighed. “I’d rather not talk about school for another two weeks.” She leaned back. The pamphlet read Solomon’s Cross High. That was the institution her father wanted her to begin attending in two weeks when the fall semester started. “I wanted to be homeschooled for the rest of high school. You know that.”

The thought of starting over had been a relief to Jemma at first, but the whole “making new friends at a new school thing” wasn’t at the top of her list of desirable new experiences.

“My whole life was in Hendricks,” she complained as if she’d had a former life in the suburb outside of Indianapolis to lament. She’d had few friends, and they had been around more for the sake of convenience than anything else. She doubted any of them would keep in touch with her for longer than a month.

“I know, sweetheart, but you’ll become a hermit like your old man, doin’ that,” Tad told her with a kind smile. He squeezed her shoulder.

Jemma shrugged. “I can make friends. I just don’t want to make them at school.”

Tad chuckled and shook his head. “Try it, Jem. For me? Just try.”

Jemma couldn’t help but grin and give in. Her father used the same words she had used when trying to convince him to move out of Hendricks. “Try it, Dad. For me? Just try.” She had said those words day after day until, at last, he had agreed to move.

“Where to, Jem?” he had asked her.

“Anywhere you want. Anywhere you think will make you better,” she had replied.

Tad Nox had chosen to move them to Kalhoun County, Tennessee, to a small one-bedroom house with a loft nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. It wouldn’t be so bad, Jemma thought. Anywhere was better than the small suburban town where running into her mom was a possibility at any given time. Here, she could go to a grocery store or the movie theater without having to worry about seeing the one person who stirred up a confounding amount of resentment and anger within her.

The image of Delilah Nox’s face flashed across her mind. She pushed the thought of her mother aside for the time being. She had more important things to face. “What’re we having for dinner, Tad?” She stood and began rifling through the boxes piled in the kitchen.

For the past several weeks, the two of them had lived on takeout, delivered pizza, untoasted Pop Tarts, and cereal without milk. Jemma was ready for a home-cooked meal. It didn’t seem like that would be possible tonight. None of the dishes had been unpacked. The boxes containing them weren’t even in the kitchen.

“You’ve got your ‘annoyed with Dad’s packing skills’ face on again,” Tad remarked with a chuckle.

Jemma gestured at a box while trying to smile. “I don’t understand why the oven mitts are in the same box as your tools and your socks and the TV remotes? Where is the TV?”

Tad shifted, his eyes drifting about the kitchen and into the darkened living room. “I’ve been wondering the same thing. I have a game I want to watch.”

Jemma glowered, which made Tad laugh more. She continued to search the boxes. Now that the task was begun, she didn’t see an end in sight. The thought of food was driven clean out of her mind. She wanted to sleep on a bed tonight with sheets and pillowcases, dammit. What she did not find in the next box, however, was sheets or pillowcases.

She frowned. “What’s all this shit?”

“Jem—” her father started.

Before he could rebuke her language, Jemma added, “Really, Dad? Why?” She pulled out a pile of faded papers, pictures, and small miscellaneous items. There was a plethora of things: printed photographs, handwritten letters, ticket stubs, and more. There was even a perfume sample of the scent her mother always wore.

Jemma’s suspicions about the items were confirmed when she found the last of the collection: a ring box. She doubted it was empty. The glittering diamond wedding ring had long since left her mother’s finger and been returned to the box. Her father was still holding onto things from his failed marriage, and that was the last thing he needed to be doing.

Jemma gave him a reproachful look. Tad stood up, looking sheepish. He scratched his head and plunged his hands deep into his pockets. He opened his mouth to give some excuse, but Jemma didn’t let him. “You promised a fresh start. You promised me you wouldn’t bring these things.”

There was a hint of sorrow in her father’s expression. It wasn’t until she saw the conflicting emotions in his eyes that Jemma realized her posture had stiffened and her face revealed her disappointment. She softened her features. Her father didn’t deserve any more admonishment than he had been given in the past two years.

The proximity of her mother in Hendricks, Indiana had done Tad more harm than it had Jemma. Not only had her mother chosen to abandon them for a “better life,” but she hadn’t even had the decency to move away. She had stayed in town, the very town she had grown up in where the people were her people, not Tad’s. Tad gradually became a stranger to the people he had once called close friends.

On several occasions, Jemma had come home from school to find her father sitting in a dim living room, nursing a bottle of liquor or a cigarette. Whenever this happened, Jemma knew he had seen her. He had seen his ex-wife Delilah Nox in a grocery store or at a gas station and been reminded of the joy and pain he had experienced during their twenty-year relationship. Jemma was determined not to allow her father to succumb to any form of addiction. They had to get away.

So here they were in Tennessee, and she still wasn’t sure what had drawn her father to this place. She didn’t know why he had chosen to move here.

“I’m sorry, Jem. I broke my promise to you,” Tad replied. He did look remorseful.

I need to throw the damn things away and be done with it, Jemma thought, but then pity for her father overwhelmed the anger stirring within her—the anger that bade her get rid of any sign of Delilah having ever been a part of their lives. What followed her pity was a pang of guilt at the thought of throwing away her father’s property without his permission, even if the property was doing a damn good job of poisoning him emotionally.

Tad gave her a wan smile. “I’ll look up what’s in town, and we’ll find somewhere to go eat.”

Conversation over, he left the room. Jemma waited until his footsteps faded into his bedroom before she crept up to the loft with the items from his marriage in hand. A mattress sat on the floor amid boxes she hoped held all of her belongings. To her left, at the top of the ladder, was a closet. She opened it and was greeted by a billow of dust. She coughed and waved her hand until it cleared. Jemma peered in. Cobwebs lined the corners. The space didn’t look like it had been used in a very long time.

Jemma bent down and wrangled things around. She moved boxes she had tossed in the day before without opening them. Her goal now was to hide her father’s belongings in the corner and cover them with her clothes. When she pushed farther into the closet, she thumped against its back. She cried out in alarm as the panel came down upon her.

“That fucking hurt!” she hissed, hoping her father hadn’t heard the ruckus from his room below. She paused and listened. No reaction came. She stood up, moving the panel off of her as she straightened. Now she was both sweaty from being outside and dusty from the closet. Further, the loft was suffocatingly hot since they hadn’t been able to get the air conditioning working yet.

All of those things fell away, however, when Jemma realized where the panel had come from. There was a false back to the closet. Whoever had used it last hadn’t put the panel back on properly, and it had shifted at her first contact with it. The real back of the closet was shallow and full of dust and cobwebs, just like the front, but Jemma bent down. There was something in the new space.

Her fingers traced the outline of a small old chest. It just fit in her hands. The outside was covered in dust, and it looked as old as the ancient trees outside. A feeling of intrigue filled Jemma. She had a feeling she wasn’t supposed to have this box in her hands, but she opened it anyway.

Faded black and white photographs covered the bottom of the chest. The subjects of the photos were an extended family gathered together at the edge of a wooded area in clothing that looked at least a century out of style. There was also a tattered leather book.

Jemma blew the dust off it. There was a name imprinted on the bottom corner, but it was so faded that she couldn’t read it. She opened the volume to find loose scraps of paper filled with writing in a thin, cramped script. She frowned. The light was bad, but she knew that even if she sat in front of the window, she wouldn’t be able to make out what was written. Whoever this had belonged to was long gone from this house and probably thought they had lost it.

She examined the words once more, which were written in a spidery scrawl. The hand looked hurried. Jemma couldn’t help but be curious. She was more of a science nerd than a history geek, but the idea that what lay before her was the hidden memoir of someone who lived in this particular corner of the United States compelled Jemma to a greater curiosity than she would have believed.

Jemma heard rustling below, followed by her father’s cheery voice. “Found a place in town, Jem. There are only two.” He chuckled. “I’m ready to go when you are.”

Jemma peered over the edge of the loft. “Soon,” she replied and turned back to the newfound objects in her hands. A panicked rush of conflicting emotions filled her. She had no clue why.

Why don’t I want Dad to see me right now? she wondered. For some reason, all her instincts told her she should keep this to herself. Without thinking about it, Jemma shoved her father’s divorce contraband into the closet with her foot and placed the ancient box on top. She kept the photo album in her hand. She didn’t want to keep the whole thing from Tad. This was the first interesting thing she’d encountered since they’d arrived, and she wanted to share it.

Tad met her at the ladder. He had climbed up while she was hiding things in the closet. “You good up here, Jem?”

She turned to find his eyes smiling and his lips parted. She nodded. “All good.” Instinctively, she closed the closet door and stood in front of it. She didn’t want to tell him about the false back, either. She didn’t want to lie to her father, but she also didn’t want him to see where she had stashed his box of marriage mementos.

Tad seemed to notice none of these things. He did, however, see the photo album in his daughter’s hands. “What’s that?”

She extended it to him. “I found it up here. It isn’t ours.”

Tad opened it and glanced at the photographs. He squinted at them through his round glasses. “Very cool, Jem. Very cool,” he murmured as he traced his fingers over the images. He shrugged. “Maybe we can find out who this belongs to when we go to town.”

Jemma nodded, then tilted her head and observed her father for a long moment. “I think it belonged to whoever lived here last. I wonder why they didn’t take it with them?” She also wondered why it had been left hidden behind a false back in the closet. Whoever had stashed it hadn’t wanted anyone to find it.

Tad scratched his head. “I bought this home a few months ago, as you know, but I never told you how much of a mystery it was.”

He had Jemma’s interest. “What do you mean?”

Tad sighed. “The real estate broker told me this house had been sitting empty for some time but had been kept from falling into disrepair by a handyman who had a long contract with someone to keep the place ‘in good order.’”

Jemma’s brows knitted. “Contracted by who?”

Tad shrugged. “Beyond me. He told us we had the option to keep the handyman if we wanted. I haven’t decided. I haven’t even met the man.”

“Who owned it before us?” Jemma asked.

“A woman named Mabel Doire, I believe, was the name he gave me.” Tad looked down at the photo album. “I wonder if this Ms. Doire is one of the women in the photographs?” He glanced at his daughter. “We’ll bring this along to dinner.” He went back down the ladder. Jemma followed, not wanting the photo album to leave her sight. She couldn’t put her finger on why. Possessiveness toward it overcame her.

“I’m ravenous!” Tad exclaimed, grinning as he exited their house. They got into his truck and made their way into town, the closest thing in the area of Solomon’s Cross to a downtown center.

Jemma glanced in the rearview mirror as they pulled out of the gravel driveway. The woods on the left of the property struck her as familiar. As their home disappeared in the distance, she realized why. The photographs of the people in the album had been taken in front of those trees.

A Road Trip With Demons in This Snippet of Demon Codex Book 1

Soul Bottles Quote Banner

Demon Codex Book 1: Soul Bottles

Professor Derrick Watson was hoping for an open and shut case when he drove out to the boonies, what he found was the beginning of a wild ride to track down dangerous magic.

Demon Codex 01 snippet-

1 –

The Federal Arcane Bureau knew better than to contact him for anything routine, which made that day’s cryptic message especially compelling. Rather than phone him at the university, they’d magically pinged him with a reverse Aoede spell that was like someone whispering an address, a name, and the word “urgent” in his ear. Professor Derrick Watson had paused only long enough to invite his graduate assistant to join him. Regardless of why the FAB had summoned him, it would surely provide good experience.

The overcast autumn sky made for a perfect afternoon drive beyond the border of Philadelphia. Watson drummed on the leather wheel of his vintage Jeep Wrangler, enjoying the colorful fields of green and brown and gold on display on either side of the road. He’d been to his destination before, but habit had led him to punch the address into the Jeep’s GPS system all the same, despite the irony of using electronics to reach a farm on the edge of Amish country.

A respected professor of Demonic Languages and Linguistics at Alexander University, Watson was in his early forties. His piercing gaze and graying temples suggested a distinguished scholar rather than a man entering middle age. At least, that was what his barber kept telling him, and the professor trusted her. Binh wouldn’t lie to him.

Watson stood just shy of six feet tall. His height distracted the eye from the beginning of a belly—the inevitable result of too much takeout food and too little exercise. He had dressed for the road trip the same way he did for the classroom, in navy slacks and a conservative button-down shirt with no tie. His standard-issue tweed jacket hung from a hook behind him in the Jeep, and his well-worn penny loafers managed the pedals.

His graduate assistant Alberto “Albert” Hernandez Alcaldo occupied the passenger seat in a pair of fashionably ripped jeans and a flannel shirt any hipster would be proud to own. His raven-black hair was pulled up in a man-bun that Watson worked very hard not to ridicule. Maybe it was a generational thing, but Watson believed that if you had to add the word “man” to something, you were signaling that it wasn’t manly. Albert never seemed to notice his mentor’s rolling eyes. At that moment, the grad student’s handsome face turned away as he basked in the calm of the rural surroundings. Like Watson, Albert rarely left the university, let alone went outside the city. It might have been a pleasant holiday if not for the source of Watson’s summoning.

The flashes of police lights in the distance banished the illusion of an enjoyable afternoon. Watson stopped the Jeep at the turnoff to the farm by what looked to be a hastily erected blockade. A uniformed Lancaster police officer approached at a glacial pace, his expression suggesting he had already decided to send the pair of civilians on their way, and he wasn’t going to be rushed. Watson sighed. Assisting law enforcement was one of the more rewarding parts of his work, but it was not one of his favorites. He’d done quite a bit of it years earlier, counting it as fieldwork and building his reputation as a premiere magical polyglot, but that was before he had gotten tenure and the freedom to focus on obscure research topics. He’d pulled back since then, and the FAB only asked for his assistance in their more difficult and interesting cases now. He didn’t begrudge them. It was good to get out of the classroom and office now and again.

Not far away and to either side of the long drive leading to the farm’s main buildings, a group of news trucks sat parked with their antennae raised. A gaggle of camera operators and reporters jostled for the best spot to do their live remotes, setting up their equipment and attempting to radiate an air of importance. Another police officer, this one looking more harassed than bored, stood between the news crews and the property on the far side of the entrance drive.

The farm appeared ordinary. Simple. It consisted of a renovated barn, a small house, and wide-open fields surrounding the two structures that sat about a hundred yards back from the main road at the end of a packed-gravel drive.

To the right, adjacent to the road, a large sign read PUPPIES OF HEALING in dramatic letters, bright white on a background of forest green. Beneath that, in much smaller print, it said Danielle Leroux, M.D., Ph.D., Wrangler. And finally, in script so small as to suggest an almost-resisted afterthought, it read Made Possible by the Derrick Watson Foundation.

Past that sign, any pretense of normalcy ended.

Gyrating in the field directly beyond the sign was a small gathering of Elvis Presley impersonators. As Watson and Albert waited for the police officer, the cavorting Elvi chased each other in circles in their sequined jumpsuits, laughing and grinning like a bunch of kids.

Watson took a deep breath and glanced beyond the Kings. Additional incarnations of Elvis milled and gyrated about the property. A pair of older Elvi lounged on the front steps of the updated farmhouse, their garish outfits bright against the gray-painted timber framing. Then, before his eyes, the house changed.

To be clear, the Elvi on the steps didn’t move. The building shimmered and flowed, and for an instant, the whole thing looked to be made of pale golden light. It pulsed once, and its lines reformed into a new shape. Then the light faded, and in its place stood a small, neon-lit Vegas-style casino. Albert nudged the professor’s shoulder, directing his gaze toward where the barn had been. A scaled-down replica of the Eiffel Tower stood there now. It was disconcerting, to say the least.

The policeman finally arrived at Watson’s door and motioned for him to lower his window.

“I’m sorry, sir, you can’t be here. This is an active crime scene.”

“I’m here at the request of the FAB,” Watson replied. “I imagine someone called ahead about me.”

Officer Molasses frowned. “May I see some identification, sir?”

“Of course,” Watson fished his wallet out of the Jeep’s center console. Digging into it, he presented the license that identified him as a senior consultant to the Federal Arcane Bureau—the obscure agency that Hollywood had popularized as “mage cops.” The officer accepted the card and stepped away to speak into his radio. He came back a moment later and deferentially returned Watson’s identification. “Thank you, Dr. Watson. My apologies. You’re cleared to enter. Please park your car here and walk into the site.”

Watson complied, turning his Jeep around to make it easier to leave in case an emergency departure became advisable. As a consultant to the FAB, he’d learned it was always a good idea to be able to leave in a hurry if the situation required it. You only needed to live through one incident involving a budding elementalist and a fireworks factory to appreciate the lesson.

He stepped out onto the gravel and glanced back into the Jeep. “You should come,” he told Albert. “The FAB gives me a lot of discretion when I help out. Nice as it was, I didn’t invite you along just for the scenic drive.” Albert opened his door and turned to the back of the Jeep, where a small golden hamster stood on top of a toolbox, its hands and face plastered against the rear window of the hard-top shell.

“Stay here,” Albert told the hamster. As an afterthought, he added, “And behave. Don’t let anyone see you, especially any of the reporters.”

Albert rounded the vehicle and joined Watson just as the professor finished shrugging into his tweed jacket. Its rumples and elbow patches completed the look of an ivory tower elite, making Watson appear out of place as they began the short trek to the transformed farmhouse beyond the media vans and a small fleet of police cars. As they passed the sign, Albert furrowed his brow and addressed his professor. “You have a foundation?” he asked as they made their way along the gravel drive.

“I do. Not on purpose. It was several years ago. A politician’s son got himself in a bit of a pickle. Apparently, he’d been trying to impress his date but had made pronunciation errors while attempting some fancy sex magic. No, that’s not the right word. There was nothing fancy about it. It was straight-up freaky.” Watson shook his head as if to clear the memory, or at least the more distracting bits of it. “At any rate, I was called in as a private consultant in the middle of the night. The short version is I saved his butt and his other parts, and the resulting compensation was embarrassingly generous. I set up the foundation to put the money to work doing some good.”

Albert nodded but couldn’t let it go. “Well, okay, that explains the how, but not the why. I mean, puppies?”

“Dani was a doctoral student of mine, not unlike you. She went on to work in palliative care.”

“That’s providing help for people with terminal medical problems, right?” Albert inquired.

“Not solely, no. The term applies to any kind of life-limiting illness. Something she, ironically, has come to understand firsthand.”

“How’s that?”

Watson chewed his lip a moment before answering. “She has an inoperable brain tumor.”

Albert said nothing for several steps but finally broke the silence by asking, “But puppies?”

“It turns out, spending time with puppies is incredibly effective for relieving physical and mental stress. Dani did the research and showed me her findings. I provided the funding, and she built this place. She runs it, hires the staff, brings in puppies from shelters all over the state, and works with the patients.”

Albert glanced around. “Okay, but I’m not getting the whole Elvis Presley thing.”

“Yeah, that’s…new.”

The quote “the cavorting Elvi chased each other in circles in their sequined jumpsuits, laughing and grinning like a bunch of kids” painted a great picture, I can’t wait to read what is causing this hilarious scene. Are you ready to continue exciting new adventures?

Another week is here and April is more than halfway over. Don’t tell anybody, but I’m sneaking to a store and buying all the chocolate creme eggs I can find. Us hackers need something to fuel us and for me, it’s coffee or Coca-Cola and chocolate. I promise it’s healthy and nutritious. Honest.

In addition to this week’s article on the books, we’ll be sharing with you an interview with two of our newest authors. Find out who below!

I have 8 amazing books launching this week and one released this morning. That’s pretty sweet for a Monday!

This Week’s New Releases

Title: Rebirth

Licking his wounds and harbored in an ex-pirate’s secret lunar base, what’s left of Dante’s crew and the alliance is in a similar position.

No one ever said life on the fringe would be easy.

No one realized how far the pirates would go to prevent their dreams of a better life from becoming reality.

Is the small spark of fight left inside them enough to take Corsera back?

Kit is broken and unsure who she can trust. She struggles to put herself back together and dare to do what she needs to most: fly. But Dante is still there, and he represents safety in a way she’d never appreciated before.

Can she rebuild herself and his confidence all at the same time? Can the Xeartais become great once more?

Until, that is, the top chef is poisoned.

All signs point to Sage as the perpetrator.

Maine and Noff have to trade magic for the fake glitz and glamor of Hollywood to try and clear Sage’s name. To make matters worse, Maine is experiencing a string of bad luck that is literally flooding her life with grief.

All Maine wanted was a vacation…

Time is running out. If Maine doesn’t find evidence to clear Sage’s name, it’s a maximum-security prison for him… YUCK! In the Human world… Double-Yuck!

But Maine has never solved a crime in the mundane world before, let alone Hollywood.

The only thing Maine knows for sure is that she’d swap the shark-infested waters of Hollywood’s social scene for Rainwater’s world of demons, dragons, and direwolves in a heartbeat!
