“I don’t think the world’s going to end if we don’t train tonight,” Jia explained to Erik over a PNIU call. She occupied her hands by pouring herself a new cup of tea from the pot on her kitchen table. “So it’s not a big deal if the tac center needed to shut down for a few days. We did all those crazy exoskeleton scenarios the last couple of weeks anyway. I need to give my brain and body some time to rest.”
“You sure?” Erik sighed. “I was looking forward to it. I wanted to work off some stress.”
Jia chuckled. “Relaxing is also a good way of working off stress. We’ve spent too much time running from crisis to crisis lately, and it’d be a bad thing if that started to seem normal. Come on. Back in your Army days, you wouldn’t want your guys constantly on the move or fighting, would you?”
“This campaign is just getting started, but I see your point. We could get dinner.”
“I already ate,” Jia replied. “Maybe tomorrow? We could go to that Thai place we passed earlier unless you’re off your spicy kick. Then we could work off stress some other way after that.”

Erik lifted his head and took in the full majesty of the Argo. Everything about the ship, from its sleek curves to its weaponry, separated it from the tiny, pathetic transport he’d been using to help out Alina. He finally had a ship worthy of his mission—one worthy of him.
He nodded in satisfaction. Since Erik’s time back on Earth, he’d learned to accept that having some nice toys didn’t hurt nor say anything bad about a man. He might have purchased his MX 60 mostly as a disguise, but there was no shame in flying around a luxury flitter, and the capabilities of the vehicle, both factory-ready and post-modification, had helped him countless times. A good soldier needed the proper tools to do his job.
Half the reason we lost on Molino was that those merc bastards had better equipment, Erik thought. I like being on the other side of the equation.
As with the MX 60, the upgrade from the Pegasus to the Argo wasn’t just an exercise in style. The weapons and maneuverability of the ship had saved them during their confrontation with Sophia Vand. He tried to imagine how they could have captured or taken her down in the Pegasus but decided it would have ended with the entire crew dead and floating through space in plasma-scorched debris. They would be filed as a flight accident and buried by the Intelligence Directorate to cover its tracks. read more…

With a smile, Erik dipped his karaage into his small dish containing a flecked brown sauce. He loved the fried chicken dish well enough, but the sauce sent it to the level of purely delicious.
If there was one great advantage humanity held over every other intelligent species, it was its ability to produce wondrous and glorious variations of fried chicken. Granted, not all the Local Neighborhood races ate meat, and they probably didn’t have chickens on their planets, but that didn’t make Erik ignore humanity’s chicken-based culinary superiority.
Too bad Jia, sitting across from him, wasn’t doing her part to enjoy humanity’s core advantages. When a woman didn’t enjoy chicken, she was letting the aliens win.
Erik took a bite of the sauce-covered chicken, enjoying the spicy notes playing across his tongue. “This is great. You should have had some, instead of that.” He nodded toward the bowl of boring white rice. “Aren’t you hungry for protein?”
Jia set her chopsticks down and shrugged. “I’m still full from breakfast. But what’s with you? You had a huge breakfast, yet you are stuffing that karaage down like you’re starving to death.” She looked him up and down. “Is there a yaoguai tapeworm in you?”
“Huh? What can I say?” Erik offered her a merry grin before taking another bite of karaage. “I’m a growing boy. And this sauce is probably spiked to make it addictive.”

The horde of data windows and augmented reality overlays in Tony’s smart lenses didn’t do much to dull the excruciating pain of sorting through the piles of data.
So, he made up stupid questions in the middle of an almost incapacitatingly boring data review. His latest was how many years of his life would he be willing to give up to be the person or persons responsible for a great discovery?
Of course, everything depended on the prize. If it was significant enough, he had decided that twenty years would be the maximum. With the ability to prolong life, that wasn’t too much to rake off the end. With a large enough prize, he would be able to afford it.
Maybe six months for something mundane.
Tony had been excited when he was selected for the Vand Foundation Fellowship to Llewellyn Observatory. Not having to hustle for grants to support his graduate work in astronomy meant he should be able to concentrate on the science like he’d always dreamed. It wasn’t the foundation’s fault his dream wasn’t living up to reality.
Even as an undergraduate, he’d quickly understood science was five percent glorious discovery and ninety-five percent hard work.
